SPURIOUS DETECTIVE GETS CHAIN GANG SENTENCE FOR TRYING EXTORTION.
George Smith, who says he is employed by the Webster Detective agency, a concern which works "For Rewards Only," was sentenced to serve 30 days on the chain gang this morning by Police Judge John B. Gordon on a disorderly person charge.
On complaint of Mrs. Matilda Wallin, Patrolman W. T. Alvey arrested Smith yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Wallin says Smith attempted to extort $5 from her and her friends on the representation that he could secure the release of a woman called "Swede Annie," now held in the city jail.
"I know the judge well and I can fix it for you if you will come through with $5," Smith said.
W. H. Beebe, manager of the North Seattle Heating Co., who was present when Smith attempted to secure the $5, told the Webster detective to return in half an hour and he would give him $5. Beebe informed Patrolman Alvey of th affair and, when Smith returned for the money, Alvey placed him under arrest.
