VICTIM OF ACCIDENT SUCCUMBS
E. A. SMITH DIES OF BURNS AT PACIFIC HOSPITAL.
His Sister, for Whom He Gave His Life, Will Recover.
E. A. Smith, inventor of the salmon canning device known as "the mechanical chink," general manager of the Smith Canning Company and one of Seattle's wealthy men, died this morning as the result of burns received in an automobile accident near the Latona bridge Monday evening.
The gasoline tank of his car exploded, overturning the machine upon himself and his sister, and setting fire to the tangled mass of wood and steel.
Smith's first thought was for his sister, and while saving her he sustained the burns which resulted in his death this morning. Smith was a large man and was pinned down partially by the steering gear. His sister escaped almost unhurt. Arrangements for the funeral will be made later.
