Obituary link (provided by Jeffrey Elmer).   Klickitat County WWII Casualties   Oren Berton Sanders was born March 2, 1909 in Klickitat County to Anna Carolina [Hyekus] and Berton Arthur Sanders.   He married Marjorie [Herrington] on February 5, 1933 at her parents' home in Sunnyside, WA.   The Sanders had one son: Richard.   Oren enlisted in the US Army on October 22, 1942.   He died on June 14, 1943 in New York City while serving in the US Army as a TEC5.   His death was not in battle, but while he was on tour of NY City with members of his regiment. Legion.

He enlisted into the US Army on April 11, 1941 and served in India and Okinawa during WWII. He additionally served in the Hood River Army reserve unit, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Paul was the manager of the Hood River Safeway store. Paul was married to Louise Dorothy [Hruby] on November 30, 1942. (Louise died in 1988.)   Paul married Viva Edith Smith on May 20, 1989, and they enjoyed sixteen years together. Paul passed away June 6, 2005 in Hood River, Oregon. He is buried on 4th Street, Lot 6. Legion.

Scheel was born March 1, 1921 to Frances J [Putz] and Hans Scheel.   Marion enlisted in the US Army on March 4, 1942.   He married Corrine Starks on January 8, 1944.   Marion served as 2nd Lt, US Army WWII and was reported missing in Action on October 25, 1944.   Marion's Gravestone is located on 8th Street Row A, Lot 19. Legion.   Lt. Scheel's service and sacrifice is honored with a memorial at the Monument at Fort William McKinley, Manila, the Philippines. Lt. Scheel was awared the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star Medals.   [*Note: It is likely that the grave here in Goldendale is a marker of respect for Lt. Scheel. All of the Military Records that I could find list Lt. Scheel as "Missing" or with a Disposition of "Nonrecoverable".

Simms in Clay County, Missouri.   He served with both the Union and Confederate Armies during the Civil War.   Richard settled in Klickitat County in 1877. His first marriage was to Miss Mary Garner on December 19, 1861. They had ten children together.   After he was widowed in 1886, Richard married again in 1890 to Miss Julia A. Goff.   Richard passed away on September 23, 1909 at the age of 69 in Goldendale, WA.

He married Marilla Dimmic Gilson in 1846 who died in 1855. Carlos married on June 21, 1856 Helen Andrews. The Spalding family came to Klickitat County in 1877. Carlos served as a Washington State Senator from the twelfth district. Helen died in 1887. He was a member of the Goldendale Fire Department and served as fire chief for several years. He was elected as county engineer. Clyde was playing in a golf tournament at Goldendale, and died on the 5th tee following a "long, straight drive" on October 17, 1926. He was 43 years old.

Frank B. Stimpson   Frank B. Stimpson was born in Springfield, Virginia on August 4, 1844. He served in the Civil War. Frank married Viola [Seal] in Jasper, Missouri in 1868. The Stimpson family were early Klickitat County pioneers, settling here in 1877. They had two children: Nora and Edna. (Nora died in infancy.) Frank served as Klickitat County Sheriff in 1886 and 1894. He retired in his later years to Seaside, Oregon for his health. Frank passed away on July 12, 1928 in Seaside, Oregon.   (His daughter Edna Darland survived him.)

Johnson Augustus Stout was born February 28, 1836 in Adrian, Michigan to Sarah G. [Cassell] and Johnson Stout. He married in 1862. Johnson served in Company K, 9th Minnesota Volunteers in the Civil War. He brought his family to Klickitat County in 1871.   Johnson's wife died and several years later. John married once more, this time to Sarah Jane [Morrill] Stout on February 28, 1895 in Goldendale.   Johnson Stout served as both auditor and county commissioner in Klickitat County.   On September 17, 1922, Johnson passed away in Goldendale. He is buried in Plot: Block Section 074 Lot 1.

Elizabeth Miller was born December 21, 1861. Her father was Captain S.H. Miller. Her father brought his family to Klickitat County in 1870. Elizabeth married Joseph Nesbitt on April 11, 1876 and had five children (albeit one of her sons died in infancy). She also finished raising Joseph's 4 year old daughter, Ada Catherine. Joseph died in 1903. Elizabeth married again on March 25, 1906 to Joseph M Stultz in Klickitat County. Elizabeth passed away on August 17, 1941 in Portland, Oregon.

Symes, Alfred James 1870

Alfred James Symes was born in England in 1870 to Prudence [Burddige] and James Symes. Mary Emma Symes on May 23, 1932 in Yakima County. Mary died in 1944.   James passed away on March 28, 1939 at the age of 68 in Goldendale.   Alfred Symes was convicted of 2nd Degree Murder in Adams County for the 1893 killing of Constable Louis Conlee, while he was being arrested for hog stealing, and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He claimed that it was in self defense. Alfred was granted a retrial and was found guilty of manslaughter, and was again sentenced to 18 years. He was considered to be a model prisoner. He was pardoned in 1901 by the Governor.

(Herman and Mary had six children together.)   Mary was then united in marriage to Alfred Symes on May 23, 1932 in Yakima County.   She passed away on June 23, 1944 in the Goldendale hospital at the age of 82.
