SCHWAB, Adolph, age 49 of Route 1 Sumas passed away suddenly at his home Saturday July 14, (1962). He had been a resident of the Sumas area since 1954, moving here from Oregon. Surviving are his wife Marjorie, three daughters, Mrs. Bert Handerson Jr. of Richmond, B.C., Mrs. Lyle Thompson of Ferndale and Katherine Schwab at home. Six brothers: Frank of Medford, Oregon; Ernest, John, William, and Carl all of Kearney, Neb. and Arnold of Everson. Four sisters: Mrs. Annie Brucker of Everson, Mrs. Charles Day of Gibbon, Neb., Mrs. Robert Kirschner of Pleasanton, Neb. and Mrs. Emil Kreutzer of Riverdale, Neb. Also four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas Thursday July 19 at 2 p.m. Marmaduke Dodsworth officiating. SCHWAB, Leo L., 82, retired sea captain, died Saturday, April 23, 1983, in a Santa Rosa, Calif. hospital. The son of pioneers Charles and Gracie Schwab, he was a native of Wickersham and had resided in Sedro-Woolley and Bellingham. A World War I Navy veteran, he was in Maritime service during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1970 as a captain for the Pacific Far East Lines and had lived in Santa Rosa since 1968. He was a member of Sonoma County Shrine Club, Santa Rosa Elks Lodge, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Balder Lodge No. 393 and Islam Temple of San Francisco. He also belonged to Masters, Mates, Pilots Association, and Council of American Master Mariners. Survivors include his wife Henrietta Schwab of Santa Rosa; a step-daughter, Lolita Bartel Hall, a sister, Zelda Salley of Sequim; and a niece, Charlene Elfstrom of Everett.
SCHWAHN, Elsie V. - Memorial funeral services for Mrs. Elsie V. Schwahn, who passed away at the Christian Rest Home on Monday, March 19, 1990, are being arranged. Mrs. Schwahn, age 94, formerly of 134 E. Grover St., Lynden, was born in Minnesota on Feb. 3, 1896, and was married to her husband, Henry "Art" Schwahn in Tacoma on July 25, 1914. In 1923 they moved to Blaine and then to Lynden in 1930. They started Whatcom Laundry and operated it until 1935. The Schwahns then moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, and returned to Lynden in 1955. Mr. Schwahn died in 1958. Elsie is survived by a brother, Palmer Peterson of Lakeside, Calif.; a niece, Mrs. Bernice Crocker of Lacey; and numerous other relatives. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Gillies Funeral Home. The ashes will be interred in Lynden Cemetery.
SCHWAHN, Henry Arthur, age 74, of 413 17th St., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, (1958) at his home. He had resided in Whatcom County for the past 15 years. Mr. Schwahn came to this county in 1923, and established Blaine Steam Laundry at that time. He moved to Lynden in 1930 where he established what is now Whatcom Laundry and Cleaners. In 1935 he went to Alaska and returned to Lynden in 1955. Mr. Schwahn was a member of Kulshan Lodge 196 F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife Elsie, and a grandson in California. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Gillies Funeral Home under the direction of Kulshan Lodge. Burial will be in Lynden Cemetery.
SCHWALM, Ray A., Dr., age 69 of 436 16th St., B'ham, passed away Sat., August 8, in Seattle. He had been a Bellingham resident since 1948, was a professor at WWU in the Technology Dept. in Vico Ed. Division. Received his under graduate degree in Millersville, PA, and Masters Degree of Education & Doctorate Degree of Education at Oregon State University. Was a member of the International Graphics Arts Assoc., where he was twice selected as Man of The Year. Served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII as a flight officer. He leaves to survive his wife Enid of the family home; 1 son, Roger Schwalm & his wife Claudia of Washington, D.C.; daughter Patricia & her husband Col. SCHWARCK, Alfred Cecil, age 71, of Bellingham, WA died March 28, 1997 at his residence. He was born December 16, 1925 in Clinton, Iowa to Manuel and Dorothy (Edmunds) Schwarck. Mr. Schwarck was retired from the U.S. Navy where he was an engine mechanic and served honorably in the East Indies, Trinidad, Mid East and at Bangor Base. He has lived in Bellingham since 1971. He married Joanne Dubbs Nov. 14, 1996 in Reno, Nevada. He was a member of the American Legion Post #7 and a Fleet Reserve member. He was always trying to help people as we both were. SCHWARTZ, Henry, age 83 of 3663 Britton Rd., passed away Wed. Oct. 6, (1976). Mr. Schwartz had resided in Bellingham for the past 28 years and was a veteran of WWI. He leaves to survive his wife, Elsie of the family home, 2 daughters, Mrs. Edith Lasso and Mrs. Dorothy Esser, both of Seattle, 2 brothers, Pete of Oklahoma and Joe of Monroe, 3 sisters, Kate Zerger of Monroe, Elizabeth Dunn of Oklahoma and Lydia Rinner of Kent. SCHWARTZ, John, age 82 years, 2822 Cedarwood Ave., passed away at a local hospital Monday, January 10, (1949). Mr. Schwartz had resided here the past two years and was a member of the Bible Students Assn. Surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Sievert, Bellingham, and Mrs. Elsie Boeren, at Thorp, Wis., one son John at Withee, Wis., also five grand and two great grandchildren. The remains were at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services were conducted by Mr. John Moore of Vancouver, B.C., Wednesday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. Remains were forwarded to Thorpe, Wis., for interment.
SCHWARTZ, Mabel C. (Gillies), 95, died Saturday, April 20, 1991 in Seattle. Mrs. Schwartz was born April 28, 1895 in Nooksack. She lived many years in Bellingham before moving to Seattle. She retired from the Frederick and Nelson store in downtown Seattle, where she worked in the silver department. She was a member of Eastern Star, Starlight Chapter, and Daughters of the Nile, where she enjoyed her participation in the Hatasu Chorus. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack (O. J.) Schwartz and son Jack M. Schwartz. She is survived by her brother Charles Gillies of Vallejo, Calif.; her daughter-in-law Vivian Schwartz; two granddaughters, great-grandchildren and many other relatives. Visitation will be held until 8 tonight at Bonney-Watson Funeral Home, 1732 Broadway, Seattle. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Nooksack Cemetery.
SCHWARTZ, Max J., age 75 years, 2318 Utter Street, passed away a a local hospital, Monday, March 10, (1947) following a lingering illness. Mr. Schwartz had been a resident of Bellingham for the past thirty-three years and was a member of the Beth Israel Synagogue. Surviving relatives include one daughter, Mrs. Eva Granduis, Bellingham; two sons, Ben Schwartz, Bellingham and Maurice, of San Pedro, Calif.; also three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the Bingham-Dahlquist Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Bay View Cemetery.
SCHWARTZ, Owen Omer, age 44, passed away Sunday, November 2, 1959 at the Northern State Hospital. He was born July 15, 1915 in Kenmare, North Dakota. Survivors include his father, Jacob Schwartz of Kenmare, North Dakota; 4 brothers, Earl, Otis, A. D., all of Kenmare, North Dakota, and Ralph of Minot, North Dakota; 4 sisters, Hazel Engelman, of Clariss, Minn.; Orpha of Moses Lake, Wash.; Opal Townsend of Minot, North Dakota, and Evelyn McGillivray, of Rt. 2, Everson. Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Gillies Funeral Home. The Reverend N. S. Richardson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenacres Cemetery.
SCHWARZE, Ella B., age 53 years, who has resided in Olympia for the past 11 years passed away in a Seattle hospital on Friday, Jan. 29, (1960) following an extended illness. Miss Schwarze was a former resident of Bellingham. She leaves to survive, her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. George Schwarze, her sister, Mrs. Hogan Brehm; and two nephews, Gilbert and Duane Brehm, all of Bellingham. The Rev. Walter R. SCHWARZE, George W., age 83 who resided at 2500 Keesling St., passed away at the family home on Sunday, March 12, (1961) following a brief illness. Mr. Schwartze (sic) had resided in Bellingham for the past 70 years and was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 31. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Erma Schwartze (sic), 1 daughter, Mrs. Hogan Brehm, 3 brothers, Carl, all of Bellingham; Albert of Olympia; Otto of Mineral, Wash.; also his sister, Mrs. Ralph Cameron of Bellingham; 2 grandsons, Duane and Gilbert Brehm of Bellingham; 3 great-grandchildren. SCHWARZE, Otto, are 76, who resided in Mineral, Wash. passed away on Sunday, June 7, (1964). Mr. Schwarze was a retired shingle weaver and a member of Bellingham Eagles Lodge No. 31, American Legion No. 171, Mineral, Wash. and a veteran of World War I. Mr. Schwarze leaves to survive 1 sister, Mrs. Ralph Cameron, city; 2 brothers, Carl Schwarze, city and Albert Schwarze of Olympia. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 11 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home, Rev. E. E. Olsenius will conduct the services which will be followed by cremation.
SCHWEIGERT, Irene M. - Memorial services for Bellingham resident Irene M. Schweigert will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Firs Conference Center. Pastor Tom Blumberg will officiate. Private burial services were held at Sedro-Woolley Cemetery under the direction of Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley. Mrs. Schweigert died Saturday, July 3, 1993, at Everett General Hospital following heart surgery. She was 67. Born Aug. 3, 1925, in Beulah, N.D., to Emil and Bertha Nei, she graduated from high school in North Dakota. She married Fred Schweigert in 1951. They lived in North Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado before settling in San Diego in 1957. In 1962, they moved to Brea, Calif., where she worked in the clerical department at F.M.C. Corp. The couple retired in 1968, spent four years touring the United States in their travel trailer, and settled in Bellingham in 1991. A member of Calvary Chapel, Mrs. Schweigert enjoyed doing arts and crafts. Survivors include her husband of the family home; daughter Karyl Matzenger of Sedro-Woolley; sons Lyle Schweigert of Sedro-Woolley and Dwight Schweigert of Brea; brothers Art Nei of Mandan, N.D., and Dale Nei of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters Vera Arves and Gertrude Berg, both of Bismark, N.D.; and one granddaughter.
SCHWEIGERT, John, age 87 years, of Ferndale, passed away Sunday, April 8th, (1962) in a local hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. Schweigert had been a resident of Ferndale for the past 38 years. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Sophia Krohn of Everett; Mrs. Mildred Brown, Vancouver, B.C., Mrs. Kattie Sinkumas of Seattle; Mrs. Rossie Russell of Bellingham; four sons, John of Abbotsford, B.C.; George and William of Everett; Phillip of Sumas; one sister Mrs. Betty Krause of Edmonton, Alberta; 31 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 12th, at 1:30 p.m. in Moles Funeral Chapel. Final resting place Nooksack Cemetery.
SCHWEIGERT, Phillip, 84, formerly of Sumas, died at Christian Rest Home in Lynden on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1995. Visitation will be at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden on Thursday from 1-9 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. A funeral service will be held at Sumas Advent Christian Church on Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Earl Crouse officiating. Burial will follow in Sumas Cemetery. Mr. Schweigert was born on July 13, 1910 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan to John and Katherina Bueschell. He came to Everett, in 1924 and then to Sumas in 1928, where he was part-owner of Smith Creek Shake Mill near Deming. After retirement he operated a worm farm and enjoyed fishing, gardening and hunting. In Sumas in 1933 he was married to Rebecca Beck; she passed away in 1960. Phillip is survived by four sons, Richard Schweigert and wife Betty of Lynden, David Schweigert and wife Lena of Ferndale and William Schweigert and wife Valerie and Jerry Schweigert and wife Pam, all of Sumas; two daughters, Karen Willemsen and husband Henry of Everson and Sharon Schweigert of Camano Island; brother William Schweigert of Lake Stevens; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
SCHWEIGERT, Rebecca (Peggy), age 43, of Sumas, passed away at her home suddenly Thursday, Feb. 4, (1960). She had been a resident of Whatcom county most of her life. She is survived by her husband, Phillip; four sons, Richard and William, both of the U.S. Navy, David of the U.S. Army, Gerry, two daughters, Sharon, Karen, all at home; one brother, Robert Beck of Lynden. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home at Sumas, Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. O. M. Matson officiating. Burial at the Sumas Cemetery.
SCHWEIKERT, Dale A., of 2115 Michigan St. died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1993, in Bellingham. He was 73. He was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Montrose, Colo., to Frank and Clare Schweikert. Mr. Schweikert played baseball and basketball and was on a national championship pole vaulting teams. He married Blossom Mathews on Aug. 24, 1947, in Las Vegas. Mr. Schweikert worked as a manager or Rockwell Aviation. A resident of Whatcom County the past two years, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1585. Survivors include his wife of the family home; daughter Debe McKain of Bellingham; sisters Bonnie Gay of Arizona and Bea Emmick of Florida; and two grandchildren. SCHWEITZER, John W., age 43, of 4656 Bay Rd., Blaine, passed away Mon., Oct. 7th, (1985) in Blaine. He was born in Allentown, PA, May 21, 1942 & was a resident of Whatcom County for 1 1/2 yrs. He retired after 21 years with the U.S. Navy on June 30, 1981 & worked as a security guard for 3 yrs. in Concrete, moving to Blaine where he was working as a security guard at the Mobil Refinery. He leaves to survive his wife Donna Dee of the family home; father of sons, Shaun & Shannon of the family home & Stephen, John Jr., Joey & Andrew of Allentown, PA; mother Cathleen Robinson; 1 brother, Forrest; & 3 sisters, Mary Ann, Susan & Kathy, all of Allentown, PA. SCHWEITZER, Rose, 87, 2726 Alderwood Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 28, 1984). She was born Aug. 30, 1897, in Austria, and had been a Bellingham resident for three years. She was a member of the Catholic Church. She is survived by a daughter (Rosemary Watson of Vancouver, B.C.), a sister (Katie Gerbesitz of Florida), two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. SCHWIEGERT, Othellia A., age 76, passed away Monday, July 10, (1950) at a local hospital following a lingering illness. Mrs. Schwiegert had been a resident of the Ferndale community for the past 12 years and was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Ferndale. Surviving relatives include her husband, John; two sons, Henry and Jake Axt, both of Portland, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Sophie Janicke, of Sumas, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 13 at 2 p.m. within the Monroe Funeral Home in Ferndale, with the Rev. G. Kepple officiating. Interment in Enterprise Cemetery.

SCHWINDT, Apploney - Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Apploney "Abbie" Schwindt, age 84, of 311 Mitchell Street, Sumas, will be celebrated on Thursday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church followed by interment in Lakeside Cemetery. Christian Prayer services will be conducted on Wednesday, August 26, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's. Mrs. Schwindt, who died suddenly Monday, August 24, (1981) was born in Alamosa, Colorado and moved to the Sumas area from Garden City, Kansas in 1937. A member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Sumas, Mrs. Schwindt had worked for many years at Kale Canning and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unite No. 212 of Sumas and had also been active in the Sumas Senior Activity Center. She is survived by four daughters, Gertrude Schafer of Riverside, California, Mrs. Genevieve and husband Adam Crape of Everson, Mrs. Helen and husband Frank Crape of Slastskanie, Oregon, and Mrs. Marge and husband Bert McMurry of Lynden; three sons, Howard and wife Rose Witman of Ferndale, LeRoy and wife Linda Witman and Jack and wife Jeanette Witman all of Everson; two step-sons, LeRoy Schwindt of Leoti, Kansas and Gene Schwindt also in Kansas; thirty-five grand and seventy-two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Witman of Garden City, Kansas and Christina Grey in Wenatchee and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.
SCHWINDT, David K., age 56, of Route 3, Bellingham, passed away suddenly at his home, Friday evening, May 20, (1949). Mr. Schwindt had been a resident of this community for the past two weeks, coming here from Fraser, Colorado. He was a retired business man. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Faye Schwindt, two sons, Walter, of Stennet, Texas, and Floyd, of Marienthal, Kansas; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Kessler; a brother, Nick Schwindt, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Thomas, all of Kansas. The remains will be forwarded to Scott City, Kansas, for burial, Monday evening, May 23, by the Westford-Beck Funeral Home.
SCHWINDT, Gregory Reinhold of Bellingham died after his fishing boat went down in the Bering Sea (Mar. 1993). He was 32. A memorial service for Mr. Schwindt and the members of his crew will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the commercial saw-tooth dock at Squalicum Harbor. A memorial gathering will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Bellingham Cruise Terminal. Born Jan. 11, 1961, in Seattle, his family moved to Bellingham in 1969, where Mr. Schwindt graduated from Sehome High School in 1979. A commercial fisher since he was 16, he worked as a commercial bottomfisher in the Bering Sea during the winter and as a commercial salmon fisher in Bristol Bay, Alaska, during the summer. He was co-owner of a bottomfish trawler, the Lady of Good Voyage, and a salmon gillnetter, the Reinhold. He married Tina Dixon on Nov. 28, 1987, in Bellingham. Mr. Schwindt enjoyed snow skiing, hunting, reading and spending time with his family, neighbors and friends. Survivors include his wife of the family home; daughters Erin and Robin, also of the family home; father Richard Schwindt of Atlanta; mother Joan Schwindt of Ashland, Ore.; sisters Jenifer (sic) Schwindt of Portland, Ore., and Cathy Schwindt of Sunriver, Ore.; grandparents William W. Meyer of Reardan, Wash., and Reinhold and Austine Schwindt of Fresno, Calif.; an aunt and business partner Joan Schwindt of Bellingham.
SCHWINN, Charles B., age 72, 1715 Smith Rd., Bellingham, passed away suddenly at home Tuesday, September 15, (1964). A retired farmer, he had made his home in Whatcom County since 1945. He had been employed in maintenance work by Sears & Roebuck for 8 years and at O'Caines Nursing Home for the past 3 years. He is survived by his wife, Delia; 6 sons, Sherman of Bountiful, Utah; Beauford, Ogden, Utah; Floyd, Springs, Wyoming; Lloyd, San Jose, California; Clair, Brunswick, Maryland and Arna, Seattle; 2 daughters, Mrs. Clysta Hawks of Bellingham and Mrs. Nini Rountree of Twin Falls, Idaho; also 27 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. SCHWINN, Della M., age 70, 1715 Smith Road, passed away at the home of her daughter in Twin Falls, Idaho Monday, October 17, (1966). She had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1945. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Verland Rountree, Twin Falls and Mrs. Dean Hawks of Bellingham; 6 sons, Sherman of Bountiful, Utah; Beauford of Ogden, Utah; Floyd, Anchorage; Lloyd, San Jose, Cal.; Clair, Maryland, Arna, Seattle; 1 sister, Mrs. Ruby Moynahan; 3 brothers, Bill, Harold, Merle Barnett, all in California; also 35 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. Christian Science funeral services will be held in the Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden Friday, October 21 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park.
SCHWISOW, Elsie M., age 61, of 415 14th St., passed away in a local nursing home, Friday, Dec. 15, (1961). She had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 14 years. Surviving relatives include her husband, William, 2 daughters, Mrs. Glen Legoe of Bellingham, Mrs. A. B. Casper of Lynnwood, 2 sons, Loyal of Edmonds, Stanley of Ferndale, 3 sisters, Mrs. Pauline Edmonds of Bellingham, Mrs. Martha Robbins of Priest River, Idaho, Mrs. Betty Burgeson of Portland, 1 brother, Harvey Nissen of Vancouver, Wash., 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted in the Moles' Monroe Chapel Monday, December 18 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. K. H. Daugs, officiating. Final resting place Woodlawn Cemetery.
SCHWISOW, William L. - Graveside services for William L. Schwisow, 100, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Moles Funeral Home. Mr. Schwisow, of 2205 W. North St., died Tuesday at Alderwood Park Convalescent and Retirement Center after a brief illness. He had remained healthy and alert until very recently, and moved to the nursing home only a year ago. a 44-year resident of Whatcom County, Mr. Schwisow was born Nov. 14, 1890, in Fairbury, Neb., to Henry and Mary Schwisow. He left Nebraska in 1918 and moved to Ritzville, where he worked as a laborer on wheat farms. He joined the U.S. Army during World War I, and returned to Ritzville to marry Elsie Nissen in 1923. The couple moved to White Bluffs, then to Hanford, where he managed the Standard Oil bulk plant until 1943. The government ordered the town's population relocated because of the Manhattan Project in 1943. The family then moved to Grandview, where Mr. Schwisow operated a Chevron station. He moved to Whatcom County in 1947. The Schwisows moved to Bellingham in 1950, and Mr. Schwisow retired from Brooks Lumber Co. in 1957. His wife died in 1961 in Bellingham. Mr. Schwisow was a member of the American Legion Post in Grandview. Survivors include his daughters, Alice Legoe of Bellingham and Doris Casper of Edmonds; his sons, Loyal Schwisow of Lacey and W. Stanley Schwisow of Ferndale; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
