SCALF, Harry R., age 77 who resided at 3017 Coolidge Drive, Bellingham, passed away in a local hospital, September 15, 1981 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Kentucky, spent his earlier life in Lewis County, had been a resident of Whatcom County for the past 34 years, and was a former owner and operator ofa fleet of logging trucks prior to his retirement in 1974. He was a life member of BPO Elks Lodge No. 194 and was former State President and honorary life member of the Log Truckers Conference of the Washington Trucking Association and was awarded the Deming Logging Show's highest honor, Bull of the Woods in 1978. He leaves to survive his wife Maxine of the family residence; father-in-law Max A. Lang of Bellingham; 1 brother, Albert Scalf of Chimacum; 2 sisters, Mrs. Alvin Young of Olympia; & Mrs. H. Carl Gunnells, Falls City; numerous nieces and nephews. Family services were held. Cremation under the direction of Veroske, Jerns & LeVeck Funeral Chapel. Final resting place - Bayview Cemetery Urn Garden.

SCALF, Maxine Lang, age 73, formerly of 3017 Coolidge Dr., Bellingham, WA, passed away November 28, 1993 in Bellingham. She was born August 10, 1920 to Max and Lila Lang in Bellingham. Mrs. Scalf, a lifetime Whatcom County resident, was employed as an executive secretary prior to her marriage to Harry Scalf in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Scalf owned and operated a trucking business for 30 years preceding Mr. Schalf's death in 1981. Mrs. Scalf was active in charitable and volunteer programs and was a member of The Maple Leaf Chapter #58 O.E.S. She is survived by cousins in California and many friends who will miss her kindness and wit. Her remains will be interred in Bayview Cemetery. The arrangements and services have been entrusted to The Jerns LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium of Bellingham.

SCANLON, William E., Col. Ret., 74, 419 Sudden Valley, Bellingham, WA., passed away December 13, 1991. He was born October 26, 1917 in Brookfield, Missouri and moved to Bellingham six years ago. Mr. Scanlon served in the U.S. Army and received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, U.S. Service Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He also was a Viet Nam Veteran, receiving the Legion of Merit. He was a member of the Sudden Valley Golf Club and tutored at Whatcom Community College. Survivors are his wife, Joan Scanlon of the family home; step-daughters, Mary Jill Walton of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and Jacqueline Turpin of Calif.; brother Murphy Scanlon of Missouri; [sister] Catherine Cassady of Iowa; five grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. SCARBOROUGH, Harold A., Sr., age 25 of 3273 Smokehouse Rd. B'ham passed away in Seattle June 22, 1988. He was born in B'ham May 20, 1963. He was a lifetime resident of Lummi Indian reservation and a member of St. Joachim's Catholic Church. SCARBOROUGH, James Herbert Sr., "Jim" age 45 of 3101 Lummi Shore Drive, Bellingham, passed away Saturday, Oct. 15th (1983) in a local hospital. He lived all of his life on the Lummi Reservation. SCARBOROUGH, Whitney Jamie - Graveside services for Whitney Jamie Scarborough of 3101 Lummi Shore Drive were held this morning at Lummi Indian Reservation Cemetery. She was 5 months old. Born March 2, 1989, she died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 1989) at her home. Survivors include her mother, Angel Scarborough; father, Earl R. James Jr. of the Swinomish Indian Reservation; a brother, Sebastian Scarborough of the family home; grandparents, Earl and Rosalie James of the Swinomish Reservation and Gloria Washington of the Lummi Reservation; great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Washington Sr. of the Lummi Reservation and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Cayou of the Swinomish Reservation; and numerous aunts, uncle and cousins. SCARDINA, Deborah Louise, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away May 12, (1983) at the age of 29. She was born April 26, 1954, she was a former Birch Bay resident, moving to Alaska about 2 years ago. She leaves to survive her parents, Robert & Betty Hansen of Birch Bay; 1 brother Michael Libecki, of Texas; her grandparents Ned & Florence King of Bellingham. Services will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2:00 Jerns & LeVeck Chapel. Interment will be at Enterprise Cemetery following the services.

SCARLETT, Beulah A., 79, of Bellingham, died Monday (June 20, 1994) in Bellingham. She was born Feb. 18, 1915 in Bellingham and was a life resident. She lived most of her life in the Geneva community. She was a charter member of Geneva Community Church, a member of Whatcom Co. Extension Homemakers Council for over 50 years and was past president of that organization. She was a charter member of Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority, Rho Chapter, and held a number of offices in that organization. Mrs. Scarlett was an avid gardener. She worked several years in the Star Drug Store and operated Star Surgical Supply with her husband Howard until the mid 1970's. Survivors: son, Howard and wife Ruth Scarlett of Zillah, WA; grandchildren, Fred Scarlett, Will and wife Jill Scarlett, Karin and husband Mike Agro, all of the Yakima Valley; six cousins & six great grandchildren; sisters, Lois Barrett and Violet Wilson of Bellingham; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 1987. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 23, 10:00 a.m. at Geneva Community Church with the Reverends William Gillfilan and Grant Whipple of Geneva Community Church. SCARLETT, George L., age 77 years, of 2300 H Street, passed away at Concrete, Washington, suddenly Monday, January 21, (1952). Mr. Scarlett had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 50 years and was the oldest living building contractor in Bellingham. He was a member of the James Street Gospel Hall and an honorary member of the Carpenters and Jointers Union, Local No. 756. He is survived by two sons, Robert S. and Howard P., both of Bellingham; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Barnes, Mrs. Mamye Hoban, Mrs. Lillian Blaisdall and Mrs. Phyllis Oser, all of Bellingham; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Adam, of Seattle; one sister, Mary Scarlett, of Shelton; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 24, at 2 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home by the Rev. Chester Rutledge. Interment, Greenacres Memorial Park.

SCARLETT, Georgia A., 66, wife of George Scarlett, Bellingham contractor, passed away early Monday morning at the family home, 2300 H street, after a short illness. Mrs. Scarlett had lived in Bellingham forty-seven years and was a member of the James street Gospel hall. Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Robert S. and Howard P., and four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Barnes, Mrs. Mayme Hoban, Mrs. Lillian Blaisdell and Mrs. Phyllis Oser, all of Bellingham; together with eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Maxwell, Seattle, and Mrs. Eva Reid, Bellingham. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Westford-Beck funeral home.

SCARLETT, Howard P., 73, 1542 Milton St., died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1987) in Bellingham. He was born June 16, 1913, in Hood River, Ore. Mr. Scarlett lived in Bellingham most of his life and was a graduate of the Old Whatcom High School, where he was a star pitcher. He also was an avid hunter. He married Beulah Swanson on Jan. 9, 1932. He was a local general contractor for 40 years and was co-owner of Star Surgical Supply. Mr. Scarlett was a charter member of Geneva Community Church, a 50-year member of the Carpenters & Joiners Local 756, and was a member of Whatcom Lodge No. 151 F&AM and the Bellingham Yacht Club. Survivors include his wife; a son, Howard D. Scarlett of Zillah; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Barnes and Phyllis Logan, both of Bellingham; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Geneva Community Church, with the Rev. Gary Brice and Doug Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Bayview Cemetery. SCARLETT, Irene, age 91, of Bellingham, passed away April 19, 1992. Born April 9, 1901 in Omaha, Nebraska, she had been a Whatcom County resident since 1911; a 1919 graduate of Lynden High School; resident of Bellingham since 1924; spent her life as a homemaker and bookkeeper. She loved to sew and do needlework. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Scarlett, Sr. in 1962. Survived by three children, one son, Bob and Rosemary Scarlett of Fortuna, California; two daughters, Barbara Funseth, Georgia and Clyde Christensen, all of Bellingham; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Barnes, Phyllis and Leo Logan and Beulah Scarlett, all of Bellingham; numerous nieces and nephews. SCARLETT, Robert Samuel, age 62, of 1676 Bakerview Rd. passed away suddenly at home Saturday, Oct. 6, (1962). Mr. Scarlett was a retired building contractor and had resided in this community for the past 60 years. Surviving relatives are his widow, Irene, at home; one son, Robert S., Jr., of Rio Del, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Olson of Bellingham and Mrs. Georgia Christensen of Great Falls, Mont.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Howard P. of Bellingham; four sisters, Mrs. Gladys Barnes, Mrs. Lillian Blaisdell, Mrs. Mamie Hoban and Mrs. Phyllis Logan all of Bellingham, also many nieces and nephews. SCARSETH, Louis Christine, age 80 years, of 1930 Humboldt, passed away in a local hospital Saturday, September 27, (1952) following a short illness. She was a pioneer resident, having resided here for the past 62 years. She is the only living Charter member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and Ladies' Aid. She is also a member of the Mission Circle and World War I Mothers' Club. Mrs. Scarseth is survived by one son, Thomas, Bellingham; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Peterson, Tacoma, Mrs. Alice Anderson, Portland, Mrs. Ellen Urquhart, Stanwood; three grand and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Olson of Tacoma; many nephews and nieces. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 1:30 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Haugen, pastor, officiating. SCARSETH, Thomas Edison, age 67, passed away in a local hospital Saturday, Dec. 1, (1962). Mr. Scarseth was a lifetime resident of this community, where he worked as a salesman; was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and Albert J. Hamilton Post No. 7, American Legion. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Ellen O. Urquhart, City; Mrs. Alice A. Anderson, Portland, Oregon, and nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Pastor Don Taylor, Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Bay View Cemetery.

SCEMONS, Thelma Y., age 85 passed away in a local hospital March 1, 1992. She resided at 1200 Birchwood, she has been a resident of Bellingham for the past 6 yrs. and was a minister of the Assembly of Gods Church for 20 yrs. She leaves to survive 5 daughters, Helen Polmateer and husband Milton of Mt. Vernon, Estelle Nagy, Elva Thorpe and husband Jack all of CA, Hazel Outz of AK, and JoAnne Card and husband Lester of Bellingham; one sister Luba Parker of MS. 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 4, 1992 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with funeral services to be held Saturday in The Free Will Baptist Church in Eupora, MS. SCHAAF, May Beatty, age 68, of 1509 E. Victor, passed away in a local rest home Sunday, October 4, (1953). Mrs. Schaaf had been a life resident of this community and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Surviving relatives include a son, George Munn, of Granite Falls, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Kibble, of Bakersfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Albin Freeberg, of Bellingham, Mrs. Mildred White, of Concord, Calif., and Mrs. Albert Sands, of Moline, Ill., and a brother, Oliver Beatty, of Olympia, Wash. SCHABALKA, Charles J., age 69, of 327 No. 4th, Mt. Vernon, passed away in that city Thursday, July 7, (1960) follow an extended illness. Mr. Schabalka had resided in Mt. Vernon for the past six year and was a maintenance engineer. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Annette Schabalka at the family home; one stepson, George Kraemer of Portland; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Vera Hull of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mable Feidner of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home, Rev. W. SCHABERT, Hildegard K., age 75, of Bellingham, died Tuesday, December 27, 1994 at her residence. She was born January 27, 1919 in New Trier, MN to Mary and Joseph Lucius. Hildegard married Nicholas R. Schabert in 1936. She moved to Hastings, MN and lived there until 1968, from there she moved to Reno, Nevada to live with her daughter Marlene and Bruce Hamaker. They moved to Bellingham in 1987. She has stayed busy during her retirement by helping raise the grandchildren. Preceded in death by her son, Roger in 1939; her mother in 1962; her father in 1961; and 3 brothers, Jacob, Harold and Irwin. Survived by a son Richard Schabert and wife Janis of Hastings, MN; a daughter, Marlene and husband Bruce Hamaker of Bellingham; 5 grandchildren, Terri Norlander of Cottage Grove, MN, Tracey Schabert of Phoenix, AZ, Nevada Hamaker of Seattle, WA, Jeremy and Mindy Hamaker of Bellingham; 1 great grandson, Tyler Norlander of Cottage Grove, MN. SCHABLIK, Anna Susan, age 87 years, of 2215 B Street, passed away at a local hospital Wednesday, February 11, (1953) following a lingering illness. Mrs. Schablik was born in Austria Hungary. She had resided the past 10 years in the Ten Mile district. She is survived by one brother, John Schablik, in Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 13, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Bingham-Dahlquist & Jerns Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Calhoun, pastor of the Congregational Church officiating.

SCHACHT, Kathleen D. - Funeral services will (be) held Sunday for Kathleen D. Schacht, 31, of Birch Bay, a teacher at Bellingham Vocational-Technical Institute. Ms. Schacht died Tuesday (July 28, 1987) in an automobile accident in Stockton, Calif. She was born June 9, 1956, in Yakima, WA. Ms. Schacht taught dental assistant classes for 10 years here and was active in dental education across the state. She was a member of the Mount Baker Dental Society, the Washington Vocational Association and the accreditation team of the National Dental Assisting Association. She also served as an advisory committee member for vocational and technical accreditation for the state Superintendent of Public Instruction and was active in state programming for the Washington State Dental Association. Survivors include her parents, William and Patricia Schacht of Bellingham; three brothers, William Schacht of Oak Harbor, Richard Schacht of Birch Bay and Fred Schacht of Everett; and a sister Pam Herzog of Everett. A prayer vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Westford Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Assumption Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Sallis officiating.

SCHACHT, Richard F. of Mount Vernon died Thursday, Dec. 22, 1994, in Mount Vernon. He was 86. Born Aug. 2, 1908, to William F. Schacht and Evelyn Schei Schacht in Burlington, his parents were Skagit County pioneers and merchants in the Burlington community. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1925 and the University of Washington School of Law in 1931. He married Mary McGlinn on Jan. 25, 1933, in Bellingham. Mr. Schacht went to work as an attorney in association with Warren J. Gilbert Sr. in 1932 in Mount Vernon. In 1937, he became a sole practitioner until he became associated with John Hicks in the mid '70s. He retired as a partner in the law firm of Schacht and Hicks in 1990. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a supply officer. Mr. Schacht was a member of the Skagit County, Washington State and American Bar Associations; Phi Gamma Delta fraternity; and was a life member of Elks Lodge No. 1604, Mount Vernon. He also served as a board member and legal counsel for Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association for many years. Mr. Schacht was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Schacht and Kenneth Schacht, and a grandson Nikolas Schacht-Goode. Survivors include his wife of the family home; daughters Gretchen Bendtsen and Julie Moody, both of Bellingham, Kristin Schacht of Edison and Paula Kovotovich of Colleyville, Texas; sons Fred Schacht of Bellingham and Ken Schacht of La Conner; brother William Schacht of Bellingham; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. SCHACHTER, Mitchell - A memorial service for Mitchell "Mitch" Schachter, formerly of Ferndale, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at JC's Restaurant, 2019 Main St., Ferndale. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Davenport Chapel of Good Shepherd in Klamath Falls, Ore. Mr. Schachter of Klamath Falls died of cancer Friday, May 6, 1994, in Klamath Falls. He was 28. Born Aug. 14, 1965, to Audrey and Melvin Schachter in Hollywood, Calif., he lived in Whatcom County from 1986 to 1993. He was a dishwasher at JC's Restaurant. Mr. Schachter enjoyed bingo, darts and dancing. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Audrey and Herb Wolf of Klamath Falls; brothers Ronald Schachter and Donald Schachter, both of California, and Daniel Schachter of Klamath Falls; and sisters Toni Woolridge of California and Melanie Womack of Tennessee. SCHACHTSCHNEIDER, Alvin G., age 67, of 1675 West Axton Rd., Ferndale, passed away Tuesday, April 17, (1976). Mr. Schachtschneider, had been a resident of Ferndale for over 50 years, was a World War II Army Veteran, a member of the Carpenters Local No. 756; Past Commander of Kulshan Post American Legion; a member of the 40 & 8, and the United Commercial Travelers. He is survived by his wife, Doris; two brothers, Ted of Marysville and Edward of Olympia; a sister, Mrs. Emma Demarest of Wenatchee, Wa.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Richard Snipstead officiating. Burial under the direction of Moles Funeral Home.

SCHACHTSCHNEIDER, Doris of Ferndale died Friday, Dec. 31, 1993, at Sehome Park Care Center. She was 90. At her request, no services will be held. Born Feb. 22, 1903, to Frank and Sally Wynne Van Demark in Ferndale, she lived there all her life. Mrs. Schachtschneider loved raising flowers and had beautiful gardens. She also loved animals, enjoyed opera and frequented the "Lunch Bucket" for cheesecake. Survivors include nieces Betty Abbott of Bellingham, Lila Alloro of Redwood City, Calif., Lois Bailey of Paia, Hawaii, Marilee Smith of Everett and Pat Judson of Carson, Calif.; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. SCHADE, Edith Margarete, former long time resident of Bellingham, died unexpectedly in Seattle Saturday, November 15, (1975) at the Kenney Presbyterian Home where she resided. SCHAEFER, Frederick L., age 81, 2821 Victor Street, and formerly of 2614 Donovan Avenue, where he had resided for forty-three years, passed away at a local hospital Friday, January 18, (1946). Mr. Schaefer, for many years, was connected with the retail mercantile business in South Bellingham, having retired about ten years ago. The deceased was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church and leaves the following survivors: the widow, Johanna E., at home; one son, E. Fred, and a grandchild, in Seattle. SCHAEFFER, George, age 72, of 2703 Lafayette Street, passed away at a local hospital Sunday, September 10, (1950) following a lingering illness. Mr. Schaeffer was born December 20, 1877, in Russia. He had been a resident of this community since 1925 and was a retired dairy farmer and a member of the Second Congregational Church in Ferndale. SCHAEFFER, Helen Marie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Schaeffer, of Ferndale, passed away at birth Friday, November 28,, (1952). Besides her parents, she is survived by three brothers, George, Robert and William; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bergsma. The Rev. C. SCHAEFFER, Jack E., formerly of Bellingham, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, in Edmonds. He was 85. Born May 25, 1912, Mr. Schaeffer graduated from Fairhaven High School and Bellingham Normal School, now Western Washington University. He attended the University of Washington. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. Mr. Schaeffer was director of music for Seattle Public Schools from 1954 to 1975. He served as president in the state, regional and national levels of Music Educators National Conference and was a member of Seattle Kiwanis Club. After retiring in 1975, Mr. Schaeffer was organist for churches and in memorial services in the Seattle area. He enjoyed flower gardening, especially raising dahlias. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Edmonds, brother Charles Schaeffer of Bellingham and niece Erin Wells.

SCHAEFFER, Joyce I. (Rodenberger), age 62, former Whatcom County resident, passed away at her home at Doebay on Orcas Island on Monday, Sept. 19, 1988. She was born in Mount Vernon on May 14, 1926, the daughter of LeRoy and Jessica Bulman. She was a 1944 graduate of Bellingham High School. She was employed at Orcas Power and Light before returning to Bellingham, where she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Bellingham School District and then Western Washington University. She returned to Orcas Island following her retirement. She was an active member of Orcas Island Community Church in Eastsound. She is survived by her husband, Russell, "Moe," of the family home; a daughter, Mrs. Linda and husband Virgil Templin of Bellingham; a son, Larry Rodenberger and wife Myrna of Lynden; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a step-son, Paul Schaeffer of Bakersfield, Calif.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Carol Smith of Bothell; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Messinger of Doebay; and numerous other relatives. A memorial funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. in the Orcas Island Community Church with Rev. John LeCompte officiating. Private burial of ashes will follow. SCHAFER, Mae L., 100, formerly of Bellingham, died July 30 in Seattle. She had been living in a Seattle nursing home. She was born May 8, 1886, in Stephen, Minn. She married Leonard J. Schafer on July 22, 1913, in Stephen. He died in 1977. In 1939, they moved from Stephen to Bellingham. Here, Mrs. Schafer was active in First Presbyterian Church and a garden club. Survivors include a daughter, Ardyce Messegee of Seattle; three sons, Jack Schafer of Seattle and Joe Schafer and Dick Schafer of Minneapolis; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces. Schahrer in Bellingham. She lived in California for five years and in Auburn from 1959 to 1990, when she returned to Bellingham. A caregiver and a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, she enjoyed quilting, dancing and walking. Survivors include her husband of Bellingham; daughters Marilyn E. Warren of Renton, Susan A. SCHALLER, Leonard H. - Services for Leonard H. Schaller, 83, Edmonds, a former resident of Bellingham and Ferndale, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beck's Funeral Home in Edmonds. She has been a resident of Bellingham for the past nine years and was a member of the Calvary Temple Church. She spent 18 active years with Cub Scouts, having receive three medals and the highest award 'Silver Fawn'. Also 18 years in coaching juniors, 6 to 8 years of age. SCHARRINGA, Clara, 84, 371 Shallow Shore Road, died Wednesday (July 30, 1986) in Bellingham. She was born July 15, 1902, in the Netherlands. She moved to Bellingham seven years ago. Survivors include two sons, Denny Scharringa, of Culver City, Calif., and Hank Scharring (sic) of Bellingham; and two grandchildren, Darren and Kristina Scharringa, of Culver City. SCHATZ, Mathew G. of Bellingham died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 77. A private service will be held in Sumner. Born April 29, 1919, to Bartol and Elizabeth Denius Schatz in Hebron, N.D., he married May Heslop in Puyallup in 1965. Mr. Schatz retired from Foremost Dairy. Survivors include his wife of Bellingham, son Roger Ufkes of Bellingham, brother Joseph Schatz of Milton, four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. SCHAUB, David B. – A memorial service for David Benson Schaub of Green Bay, Wis, formerly of Bellingham, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Green Bay, with the Rev. Keith Schroerlucke officiating. Family and friends may call at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the service begins. Mr. Schaub died of an illness Friday, April 21, 2000. He was 83. Born Jan 19, 1917 to Benson and Mary (Johnson) Schaub on a farm in Oconto Falls, Wis., he became a church organist at Oconto Falls Methodist Church when he was 14. Mr. Schaub graduated from Oconto Falls High School, attended Lawrence College and received a bachelor's degree from the Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wis. Mr. Schaub served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Most of his duty was in North Africa and Naples, Italy. He received a Bronze Star while serving in Italy. In 1946, he received a master's degree from Harvard and in 1949 he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a doctorate. While in California, he played many organ recitals in San Francisco and the East Bay area. Mr. Schaub was on the faculty at Hastings College in Nebraska and then Whitman College in Walla Walla. In 1953, he moved to Bellingham and taught at Western Washington University until his retirement in 1982. He continued to perform as a church organist until 1996. He moved to Green Bay in 1998. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Schaub, and two sisters, Mary Pappenfuss and Helen Johnson. SCHAUER, John, age 68, of 6113 North Star Rd., Ferndale, passed away at home Mon., Nov. 17, 1986. He was born in Weissenstein, Yugoslavia, Feb. 13, 1918, and was a Ferndale resident for the last 36 years, prior to that lived in Austria. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ferndale, Carpenters & Joiners Local No. 756 of Bellingham, a past member of Mt. Baker Bee Keepers Assoc. Survivors include wife, Theresa of the family home; 2 sons, Derek of Ferndale & Hans of Blaine; 2 daughters, Helen Schauer & Elizabeth Diaz & husband Luis of Ferndale; 3 grandchildren, Stephanie, Regina & Daniel Diaz; 1 sister, Albine Kraker of Austria. Vigil prayer service to be held Thurs., Nov. 20th, 7 p.m. at Chapel of Moles Funeral Home. SCHAUMBERG. Ronald LeRoy, 50, passed away April 27, 1993 after a brief illness. Born March 30, 1943 in Rochester, Minnesota. Graduated from PLU in 1971. Completed master's degree in Business at WWSU in 1992. He was employed by ITT/Rayonier 18 years and recently by Miller Shingle Company of Granite Falls, WA. Survived by his wife of 31 years, Charlene of B'ham; son, Kurt & wife Karen and their children, Kenneth & Katlynne of B'ham; daughter Alynne & husband Robert Gootkin, Jr., & their son Kyle of Gig Harbor; mother, Mary Schaumberg of Sequim, WA; two brothers, Dr. Gene Schaumberg of CA & Dr. John Schaumberg of North Carolina; sister, Beth Reinertsen of Seattle. SCHAYES, Telefore George, 84, of 2119 Ellis St., died Monday, (May 25, 1981). He was born Nov. 13, 1896, in Pennsylvania, and had been a Bellingham resident for nine years. He was a member of the Senior Activity Center and Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held in McDonald, Pa. Local arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.

SCHEDLIN, Barbara I. passed away on March 3, 2006 in Bellingham WA after a short battle with lung cancer. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Schedlin. Visitation hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Barbara is survived by husband Gordon D. Anderson, daughters Linda and Laura Schedlin, grandchildren Richard Hull, Kendra Gray and Melissa Schedlin, and brother Robert McClelland. Barbara lived in Port Orchard, Bellevue, Quilcene and most recently, Lynden, Washington and Sun City, Arizona. She was an active member of Jobs Daughters and 4-H in San Carlos, California. Barbara loved to travel, golf, cook, garden and play bridge. She loved her friends and family dearly and enjoyed life to the fullest. A memorial service for Barbara will be announced at a later date.

SCHEEL, Fred W., 82, Seattle, died April 1, (1987) in Seattle. He was born Oct. 16, 1904, in Holmestrand, Norway. Mr. Scheel lived in the Bellingham area for many years before leaving in 1963. He was employed in the Alaska salmon industry since 1924. In 1963, he retired from the Pacific American Fisheries, having served as cannery superintendent at Port Moller, Alaska. He was a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Washington's School of Fisheries. Mr. Scheel was an active member of the Norwegian Commercial Club. He is survived by many relatives in Norway and close friend Louise Truax of Bellingham. At his request there were not services. Arrangements were by Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle.

SCHEELE, Dingman, - A funeral service for Dingman Scheele, of Weidkamp Road, Lynden, was held on Monday, June 5, at Faith Reformed Church at 1 p.m., with Rev. Carl Haak officiating. Burial followed in Monumenta Cemetery. Mr. Scheele passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 31, 1989, at the age of 74. He was born in Holland on Dec. 21, 1914, to Dingman and Catherina Scheele. He was married to Johanna DePutter in Holland on March 6, 1941. In 1947 they came to Canada and then to Whatcom County in 1955. He was a dairy farmer and member of the Protestant Reformed Church. He is survived by his wife, Johanna, of the family home; a daughter, Rena Worst and husband Bernie of Lynden; two sons, Marice Scheele and wife Cheryl of Bellingham and Dennis Scheele of the family home; a brother Gillis Scheele of the Netherlands; and six grandchildren. Services were under the care of Gillies Funeral Home of Lynden.

SCHEERER, Esther L., age 78, of 2027 Washington, Ferndale, passed away in Bellingham on February 18, 1987. She was born in New Leipzig, North Dakota, Feb. 17, 1909. Recently moved to Ferndale from Selby, South Dakota. A member of the United Methodist Church of Carson, North Dakota. Preceded in death by husband, John and brother, Reiny Haring, parents, Henry and Pauline Haring and grandchild, Kolette. Survivors include five children, Delores Sprenger, Battle Ground, WA, Doris Reichert and husband, Reuben of Selby, South Dakota, Walter Scheerer and wife, Phyllis of Hugo, Minnesota, Gladys Wittmer and husband, Mel of Ferndale, Ray Scheerer and wife, Connie of Sumner, WA; 22 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Lindquist and husband Bill of Grass Valley, CA and Nita Nash and husband, Gil of Penn Valley, CA; two brothers, Arnold Haring and wife, Esther of Seattle, WA and Rueben Haring and wife, LaVerne of Galt, CA. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Triumph Lutheran Church, Ferndale, with Rev. James Fugleberg officiating. Burial will be at Carson, North Dakota. SCHEFFER, Bert, 78, of 1501 Front St., Lynden, died at his home following an extended illness on April 20, 1994. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday in First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Rev. Philip Kok officiating. Burial followed in Monumenta Cemetery in Lynden. The son of Herman and Frances (Zwiers) Scheffer, Bert was born in Pease, Minn. on March 22, 1916 and moved to Whatcom County in 1937. He was married to Edna Braeger in Lynden on March 7, 1941. Together they operated a dairy farm on Massey Road near Everson for many years before moving into Lynden in 1978. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden and was a former member and consistory member of Sumas Christian Reformed Church. He also enjoyed bowling and playing pool. He is survived by his wife Edna at home; two sons, Dennis Scheffer and wife Teri of Everson and Darrol Scheffer and wife Carolyn of Friday Harbor; five daughters, Gwen and husband Howard Vander Kieft, Carole and husband Larry Vander Kooi and Marilyn and husband Larry DeKoster and Jane and husband Jack Bosman, all of Lynden, and Donna and husband Larry VanWieren of Holland, Mich.; 28 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brother Henry Scheffer of Lynden; five sisters, Connie Wiley of Everson, Harriet Groen, Marie Timmer and Kitty VanRy, all of Lynden, and Jeanne Mutic of Ferndale; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded by a grandson, Michael VanderKooi; sons-in-law Howard Bowen; brothers John and Joe Scheffer; sister Alberta Boxum; and brothers-in-law Bill DeHoog, Ed Boxum and Ike Groen. SCHEFFER, Herman, age 73, of Route 2, Everson, passed away in a local hospital, Monday, June 27, (1960) following a brief illness. He had been a resident of the Everson area since 1937 and was a member of the Everson Christian Reformed Church. Survived by his wife, Frances; 4 sons, Henry, Bert, John, all of Everson, Joe of Sumas; 6 daughters, Mrs. Cornelia Wiley of Everson, Mrs. Alberta Boxum, Mrs. Marie Timmer, both of Lynden, Mrs. Harriet Groen of Sumas, Mrs. Katherine DeHoog of Oak Harbor, Mrs. Jean Hong of Seattle; one sister, Mrs. John Ravenhorst of Hollandale, Minn. Also 42 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Everson Christian Reformed Church, Thursday, June 30, at 2 p.m., Rev. Jack Matheis officiating. Burial will follow in the Monumenta Cemetery under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home.

SCHEFFER, Joe - Funeral services for Joe Scheffer, age 61, of 208 South 15th St., Lynden, were conducted on Tuesday, May 29, at 2 p.m. in the Sumas Christian Reformed Church with Rev. William VandenBos officiating. Burial followed in Monumenta Cemetery. Born in Pease, Minnesota, Mr. Scheffer died on Thursday, May 24, (1979). A county resident since 1937, he was a retired farmer and a member of the Sumas Christian Reformed Church. He was married to Anne Chudek in Everson on December 5, 1941. Besides his wife, Anne, he is survived by a son, James, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; four daughters, Mrs. Janice (Wayne) Brink, Mrs. Sally (Gordon) VanCorbach and Karen Scheffer all of Lynden and Marna Scheffer (finace of Dean Kredit) of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Henry and John of Everson and Bert of Lynden and six sisters, Mrs. Connie Wiley of Everson, Mrs. Alberta Boxum, Mrs. Marie Timmer and Mrs. Katherine VanRy all of Lynden, Mrs. Harriet Groen of Sumas and Mrs. Jennie Mutick of Ferndale and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

SCHEFFER, John, 73, of 194 17th St., Lynden, passed away while surrounded by his family at his home on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1992. John was born in Pease, Minn. on Jan. 24, 1919 and lived in the Everson area all of his adult life. He served in Germany and Italy during World War II in the Army. He drove an Arden Farms truck and managed Nooksack Farms and his own dairy farm. Besides his family, John loved driving his John Deere tractors, playing pool with his friends and watching sport on television. In his younger years, John was well-known as a star pitcher for the Home Plate softball team. He was a lifetime member of the Christian Reformed faith, serving as both elder and deacon for several years. He married Cobie Kamperman on Aug. 9, 1940 in Lynden. She survives her husband at the family home. Other survivors include his three daughters, Darlene Zylstra of Everson and special friend Merle Herrett, Cheryl Scheffer of Everett and Shirley Grant and husband Bob of Mukilteo; two brothers, Hank Scheffer and wife Alice and Bert Scheffer and wife Edna, all of Lynden, five sisters, Marie Timmers and husband Harv, Kitty Van Ry and husband Adrian and Harriet Groen, all of Lynden, Cornie (sic) Wiley and husband Hershel of Everson and Jean Mutic of Ferndale; sisters-in-law Ann Scheffer of Lynden, Jennie Steen of Arlington and Nell Hepburn and husband Gary of Seattle; brothers-in law Fred Kamperman and wife Grace of Bellingham and George Kamperman of Albany, Oreg.; two grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by brother Joe Scheffer, sister Alberta Boxum and son-in-law Ray Zylstra. Memorial funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Second Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Rev. Al Vermeer officiating. SCHEFFLER, Hugo C., age 76 of 2835 Ellis, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, (1977). Mr. Scheffler had resided in Bellingham for the past 9 years and was a retired minister of the Mennonite Church. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Susan Scheffler of the family home; 4 daughters, Miss Ruth Scheffler, City, Mrs. Eva Marie Gering of Ritzville, Mrs. Hildegard Lemke of Burnaby, Mrs. Gertraud Dirks of Black Creek, Vancouver Island; 2 brothers and 1 sister in Germany, numerous other relatives in Germany and British Columbia. SCHEIB, Harry Edward, age 69, of Route 2, Everson, passed away in a local hospital Wednesday, Oct. 24, (1962) following a short illness. He had been a resident of the Nooksack area since 1922 and was a member of the Nooksack Grange and the Nooksack Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, Joe of Sumas; one sister, Mrs. Dean Leece of Longview, Wash.; four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas, Saturday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m., Rev. Samuel Carlson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park. SCHEIB, Joe E., age 67, of 3394 Lindsay Rd., Everson died suddenly Monday, July 30, (1984) as the result of an automobile train accident near Everson. Born Dec. 13, 1916 in Lovell, Kansas Mr. Sheib moved to Whatcom Co. in 1922. He graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1934. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington and a Bachelor or Arts degree from WWU. For three years he taught at Sumas Elementary School and since 1964 has been employed as a lab technician in the psychology shop at WWU. He was a charter member of the Nooksack Valley Baptist Church, and during WWII served in the U.S. Army and received the silver star for heroism. He was married to Esther Trombley in Bellingham on April 2, 1943. He is survived by his wife Esther; 3 sons Norvel & wife Nancy of Sumas, Norman of Everson & Mark of Lynden; a daughter, Mrs. Joanne & husband John DeBondt of Lynden; 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thurs., Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. in the Nooksack Valley Baptist Church with Rev. John Ruhlman officiating.

SCHEIB, Louella Emma, age 68, of Route 2, Everson, passed away in her home Thursday, Feb. 9, (1961) following an extended illness. Mrs. Scheib had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1923. Survivors include her husband, Harry E. and one son Joe, both of Rt. 2, Everson. Also three grandchildren. SCHEIB, Margaret, age 66 years of 2922 Victor passed away at a local hospital Saturday, Jan. 12, (1957) following a short illness. She leaves to survive her husband John F. of the family home. Two sons, Thomas E. and Grant E/F, both of LePage, Calif. Two daughters, Mrs. Edna Usher, of Anaheim, Calif., and Mrs. Margaret E. Coe, of this city. Seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Two sister, Mrs. Tom Winter, of Pittsburgh, Calif. and Mrs. Grant Young, of Arcadia, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. within the St. Paul Episcopal Church, with Rev. W. Robert Webb, rector, officiating, under the direction of the Westford Funeral Home.

SCHEIBE, Edith Marie, 83, died Monday, April 11, 1994, in Bothell. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Greenacres Memorial Park. Born Jan. 24, 1911, to O. M. and Emma Peterson in Flandreau, S.D., she lived in Whatcom County for 55 years. She married Rudolph Scheibe on Aug. 10, 1932, in Alma, Mont. Mrs. Scheibe moved to Bothell in 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964, and by daughters Alice Brown in September 1982 and Marlene Pulley in June 1993. Survivors include sisters Dorothy Crump and Mildred Grout, both of Bellingham, and Viola Dunham of Spokane; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Jones-Moles Funeral Home.

SCHEIBEL, Edwin C., a resident of Calistoga since 1977, passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 1978 at the Calistoga Convalescent Hospital following an illness of 10 months. He was 67. Mr. Scheibal was born in Tacoma, Wash., Nov. 17, 1910, where he went to elementary school and graduated from high school. Following graduation he worked for a time as a cook and also participated in the CCC program that was in effect during the depression days. During World War II he worked in the shipyards. He married the former Bernice Becker, Aug. 24, 1938 in Tacoma, Wash. In 1948 he began work with the Kirby Vacuum Cleaner Co. as a sales and management trainee in Tacoma. Three years later he was transferred by Kirby to their Bellingham, Wash. office, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1972. He served as branch manager in Bellingham and was extremely successful as a sales leader for the Kirby Co. He became a member of the International Lions Clubs in Bellingham and during the course of his 25 years of membership held every office in the club including president. He gave himself vigorously to its many charity programs serving as March of Dimes chairman, and eye bank chairman on many occasions. He served as chairman of many district Lions conventions that met in Bellingham. He had transferred his Lions membership to the Calistoga club when he moved here but was unanimously elected an honorary member of the Bellingham club because of his faithful 25 years of membership and service. Mr Scheibal was an active outdoorsman and looked forward to the annual opening of the pheasant season in Wash. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Calistoga. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Scheibal of Calistoga; his daughter, Shirley Sparks of St. Helena; son, Tom Scheibal of San Francisco, and one sister, Erma Scheibal of Tacoma, Wash. He also leaves four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church of Calistoga on Sun., Oct. 22 at 12:15 p.m.

SCHELDRUP, Helen Margaret, age 89, formerly of 1901 Lakeway Dr., passed away June 12, 1991 Bellingham. Born Jan. 2, 1902 in Manistique, Michigan, she was a graduate of Ferndale High School; lifetime member of Eastern Star; member of Sons of Norway; was a homemaker and loved gardening. Survived by a son, Robert & wife Carolyn Scheldrup, Snohomish; daughter, Nancy Scheldrup of Boston, Mass.; brother, Robert Lindsley, Bothell, WA; sisters, Hildur Kaye of Seattle & Pauline Goldade of Bellingham; 2 grandchildren. Services will be held on Tuesday June 18, 1991 at 1 p.m. at Westford Funeral Home.

SCHELDRUP, Simon K., Dr., age 85 of 1901 Lakeway, passed away Thursday, April 21, (1977). Dr. Scheldrup had resided in Bellingham for the past 54 years and was a chiropractor, a veteran of WWI, member of the Albert J. Hamilton Post No. 7, American Legion, The Sons of Norway, Weyeland Lodge. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Helen M. Scheldrup of the home; 1 son, Robert of Snohomish; 1 daughter, Miss Nancy Scheldrup of Boston, Mass.; 1 brother, Sveire Scheldrup of Trandheim, Norway; a cousin, Mrs. C. A. Stang of Seattle. SCHELIN, Fredericka, age 78 years, formerly a resident of the Lynden area passed away in a Sedro Woolley hospital Sunday, July 3, (1960). Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wallace Parkinson of Everett; also two grandsons, Lynn and Gregory Parkinson, both of Everett. SCHELL, Martha Margaret Wilkerson, 79, quietly passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Mt. Baker Care Center. She was born May 27, 1928, at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, to William Henry and Anna May (Carrico) Wilkerson. She had been a resident of the Ferndale and Bellingham areas since 1969. She married Orville Chester "Speedy" Schell on June 30, 1946 in Rogers, Arkansas, where they resided during must of the time that they were raising their four children. She was a spiritual woman and a member of the Church of Christ. Martha was a devoted mother to her four children, a very special wife to her husband, a loving grandmother, and loved many extended family members as her own. Her open loving home and heart made her special to many. She truly made "Family" the centerpiece of her life. She had a wide variety of interests, and read and wrote throughout her life. She also studied and wrote on the genealogy of her Wilkerson family and Orville's Schell family. Martha was one of the Roeder Home Writers whose stories were published in "The Storytells" in 1994. Her love for nature and the beautiful world we live in was her essence. She will be greatly missed, but her spirit lives on in all who were touched by her. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved first daughter, Deborah Kay. She was also preceded by her cherished husband of 61 years, Orville, who passed away four weeks ago ... only hours after celebrating their 61st Anniversary. She was the last of her Wilkerson family (of Pea Ridge, AR). Preceding her were brothers James Wiley "Jack" Wilkerson of Tulsa, OK; John B. Wilkerson of Hutchinson, KS; Clifford Homer "Dutch" Wilkerson of Pea Ridge, AR; and William Henry Wilkerson, Jr. of Joplin, MO. Sisters were Lillian "Lillie" May Wilkerson-Hasty of Southwest City, MO; Lemora "Mora" Wilkerson-Smith- Jump of Klamath Falls, OR; Pansy "Pat" Vivian Wilkerson-Hayes-Harville, of Houma, LA. Martha is survived by her remaining three children: Orville Carroll (& wife Sylvia) Schell of Covington, WA; Thomas Schell of Bellingham, WA; and Susan (& husband John) Arrigoni of Bellingham; two grandsons: Scott David Schell (& Margaret), Ryan Lee (& wife Stephanie) Schell; plus three Great Grandchildren: Kayla Lea Schell, Corey Lee Schell, and Mia Ramos, all of the Seattle area, and numerous extended family members. Visitation will be held at Westford Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1. SCHEMSTAD, Gary Burnett, age 49, of Concrete, passed away Thurs. Sept. 23, 1993. He was born Dec. 8, 1943, in Bellingham, to Burnett and Esther (Olson) Schemstad. He had been a Skagit County resident the last 4 years; prior to that he lived in Bellingham. Gary had been a Bellingham Fireman for 22 years, where he was Driver for Engine Company #54, and will be deeply missed by his fellow Fire Fighters. He was a graduate of Bellingham High School in the class of 1962; was a member of the Concrete Aerie #1444, F.O.E. and was also a member of the Independent Order of Foresters Court #606 of Mt. Baker, and an avid commercial fisherman. He is survived by daughter Anna Schemstad of Bellingham; three sons, Scott Schemstad and wife Stacy of Bellingham; Steve Schemstad and wife Tammy of Deming; Jon Schemstad of Bellingham; his parents Burnett and Esther Schemstad of Bellingham; sister Janet Harmoney of Everson; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. SCHENCK, Ernest Glenn Jr., S/Sgt., 3040 Eldridge Avenue, gave his life at Luzon in 1944 while serving in the infantry. The sergeant was 23 years old, was a graduate of Bellingham High School and a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Vets of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Previous to entering the service he served in the National Guard. He was a grandson of the pioneer family, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Riddle. Surviving relatives are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest G. Schenck, of this city; two sisters, Mrs. L. R. Corbin and Mrs. V. J. Todd, Anacortes. The remains will be received at Harlow-Hollingsworth Saturday August 7, when graveside services will be conducted at Greenacres Memorial Park at 3:30 p.m. by Rev. Canon E. B. Smith, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will accord military honors, followed by interment.

SCHENCK, Laura F., age 69, of 2623 Walnut St., passed away in a local hospital Saturday, Nov. 20, (1954). Mrs. Schenck had resided in this community for the past 65 years and was a member of the Broadway United Presbyterian Church and was secretary of the Daughters of America, Council No. 2 for 25 years. She leaves to survive her husband, William A. Schenck at home; two sons: William I. and Robert F. Schenck of Bellingham; three daughters: Mrs. Doris Cox and Mrs. Florence Biggerstaff of this city, and Mrs. Evelyn Toby of Seattle; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Barton of Aberdeen, Wash., Mrs. Marian Young in Japan, and Mrs. Elsie Cranson of Cordova, Alaska; numerous nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services will be conducted by the Rev. Norman B. Harrison and officers of the Daughters of America, Council No. 2, Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. Final resting place, Greenacres.

SCHENCK, Maxine I. - Dies in Seattle -- The remains of Maxine I. Schenck, 27, of Poulsbo, who passed away Sunday (27 Apr 1947) in a Seattle hospital, have been received by the Harlow-Hollingsworth funeral home where services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Canon Ernest B. Smith of St. Paul's Episcopal church will officiate and interment will take place in Woodlawn cemetery. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil R. Schenck who moved from Bellingham to Poulsbo about seven years ago. She went through school here, and was graduated from the Whatcom high school in its last class before it was made a junior high school. Besides her parents, she is survived by a daughter from a recent marriage; a sister, Mrs. Geraldine Byrd of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Jack A. and Joseph M. Schenck, of Poulsbo; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Western, of Bellingham; three uncles, William A. Schenck, of Bellingham, Glen B. Schenck, of Seattle, and Robert H. Western, of Puyallup; and an aunt, Mrs. George W. Pfarr, of Bellingham.

SCHENCK, Nellie, age 75, of 2317 F St., passed away suddenly Thursday, June 10, (1965) in a local hospital. She was a lifetime resident of Bellingham, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a member of the Women of the Moose. Surviving are her husband, Ernest of Bellingham; 2 daughters, Mrs. Viola Todd of Bellingham; Mrs. Enid Corbin of Anacortes; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandsons; 3 sisters, Mrs. Edna Arnott and Mrs. Annie Brooks of Bellingham; Mrs. Inez Aldrich of Lynnwood. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 14 in Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home. Father John B. Winn officiating. Interment Greenacres Memorial Park.

SCHENCK, Ovita Violet - Former Bellingham resident Ovita Violet Schenck, 87, of Poulsbo died Sunday (Feb. 4, 1990) after a short illness at Martha and Mary Nursing Home in Poulsbo. She was born Feb. 23, 1902, in Bellingham and moved to Poulsbo in 1940. She married Cecil R. Schenck Oct. 23, 1917, in Bellingham. He died in 1985. Mrs. Schenck was a past member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She loved her family and spent most of her time with family members. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Riddle of Poulsbo; two sons, Jack A. Schenck of Hansville and Joseph M. Schenck of Poulsbo; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. No services will be held at her request. A private burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Jones Funeral Home.

SCHENCK, Robert F., age 85 of Seattle, passed away October 6, 1997. Mr. Schenck was born in Bellingham April 10, 1912, to William and Laura Schenck, and graduated from Fairhaven High School, was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church and many local lodges and organizations. He owned and operated Bellingham Radio and Television. After selling his business and retiring to Lake Havasu City, AZ. He and his wife Margaret, were members of the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Havasu City, AZ. He married Margaret Mary Dolhenty in 1937 and they enjoyed 57 years together until her death in 1994 when he returned to Bellingham and then to Seattle. Survivors are his three sons, Bob of Arizona, Gordon of Seattle and Edward and his wife Gail of Woodinville; his sister, Doris Cox of Bellingham; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Funeral Liturgy Service will be held 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 1997 in the Jerns LeVeck Funeral Chapel with Father DeFolco officiating. An Inurnment Service will be held October 18, 1997 in Havasu Memorial Gardens, Lake Havasu City, AZ. The arrangements and services are under the direction of Jern LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium of Bellingham.

SCHENCK, William Irwin, age 54, of 2125 Donald Ave. passed away Friday, October 4, (1963). A Life resident of Bellingham, Mr. Schenck was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 194, the Washington Cattleman's Ass'n and the Goshen Grange. Survivors are his widow, Margaret at home; two sons, Duane C. of Bellingham and William Dale of Seattle; one daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Moe of Millington, Tennessee; ten grandchildren; father, William A. Schenck of Bellingham; one brother, Robert of this city; three sisters, Mrs. Doris Cox of Bellingham, Mrs. Evelyn Toby of Seattle and Mrs. Florence Biggerstaff of Olympia. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Pastor E. E. Olsenius Tuesday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. Final resting place Bay View Cemetery.

SCHENCKING, Babette, age 87 of Route 2, Blaine, passed away in a local rest home Monday, February 7, (1966). A resident of Whatcom County the past 42 years she had made her home in Blaine since 1924. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Blaine. Surviving are 3 sons, Oscar and Al both of Blaine, Edward of Snohomish; 2 daughters, Mrs. Elenore Rockey of Bellingham, and Mrs. Anne Sperry of Seattle. A sister Katie Hoyey of Canada. Also 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Holy Rosary will be recited at the McKinney Funeral Home Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. Requiem Mass in St. Ann's Catholic Church Wednesday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m. Father John O'Sullivan celebrant. SCHEND, James Edward, age 29, of 7908 Hamm Rd., Custer, passed away Thurs., April 20, 1978. Mr. Schend had been a resident of Whatcom Co. 8 yrs. & is survived by his wife Cherri. A son, Brian James. SCHENK, Edna Mae, age 83, of 2400 Samish Way, passed away Tues. May 10, (1983). Mrs. Schenk had been a resident of Whatcom County for many years, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Cooties Auxiliary of the VFW. She was retired from the Cement Plant and leaves to survive 1 son Robert of Lynnwood; 3 daughters, Hazel Pullar of Lynden, Lois Brehmer of Anacortes, Doris Johnson of Ferndale; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Effie Hachman of this city. SCHENK, Ethelyn G., 2501 E. St., age 76, passed away Sunday, March 5, (1972). Mrs. Schenk was born in Michigan and had resided there most of her life. Survivors are 2 sons, Howard, city, Alvin, Sacramento, Ca.; 4 daughters, Mrs. Margaret Merrideth of Seattle, Mrs. Ada Bryant of Kent, Wash., Mrs. Marion Kraft of Seattle, Mrs. Gertrude Lunde of Everson; 1 sister, Mrs. Alice Price of Burlington; 3 brothers, Al Vander Yacht, of Ferndale, James Vander Yacht, city and George Vander Yacht, Lynden; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Friday, March 10 at 1 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Heart Fund.

SCHENK, George August, age 72, of 1216 Toledo Street, passed away at home on Friday, August 17, (1962). Mr. Schenk had resided in this community for the past seventy years; was a retired employe of the Gorge Dam, and a member of Culinary and Beverage Workers Union, Local No. 529. Survivors are the widow, Ethelyn G., at home; two sons, Howard G., City; Alvin L., San Jose, California; four daughters, Mrs. Ada E. Bryant, Kent; Mrs. Margaret E. Meredith, Seattle; Mrs. Marion Kraft, Seattle; Mrs. Gertrude Lunde, Everson; seventeen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and one brother, Robert Schenk of Bellingham. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services are pending.

SCHENK, Grace D., 2323 B St., passed away Thursday, February 1, (1973). She was 87 years old and an 80 year resident of Bellingham. She is survived by three nieces and two nephews, including Leigh Simpson of Bellingham. Jones Funeral Home arranged services.

SCHENK, John, 83, passed away Tuesday, January 30, (1945), at the home of a son, George, Ferndale route 1. He was born in Australia and came to this country as a young man to settle in Wisconsin where in 1886 he wed Mary Rudy. The couple came to Whatcom county fifty-five years ago. Mrs. Schenk passed away in 1925. Mr. Schenk has resided here ever since. Survivors include two sons, George, Ferndale, and Robert, of Bellingham, and a daughter, Mrs. L. J. Donbusch, of Compton, Calif.; thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. The body rests at the Knapp and Knapp funeral home in Lynden and funeral announcements will be made later.

SCHENK, Norma of Alderwood Manor died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 1980) in a local hospital. She was 59. Born in 1920 in Mower County, Minn., she was past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary post No. 1040, was a three-time past president of the MOC auxiliary of the VFW and was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by her husband, four daughters, a son, three sisters, two brothers, 12 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Beck Funeral Home of Edmonds is in charge of arrangements.

SCHENK, Robert F., Sr., age 86, of 3127 Greenwood Ave., passed away Mon., June 26, 1978. A life time Whatcom Co. resident, he was an Army veteran of WWI & a member of the Lime & Gypsum Workers Union. He is survived by his wife, Edna; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Norma of Alderwood Manor; 3 daughters and son-in-laws, Hazel & Don Pullar of Lynden, Lois & Rob Brehmer of Anacortes, Doris Nutter of city; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, numerous nieces & nephews. SCHENKEL, Alfred L., age 71, formerly of Lynden, died Friday, Jan. 13, (1984) in Centralia General Hospital from fractures and internal injuries received when he was struck as a pedestrian by a car on Harrison Avenue in Centralia. Mr. Schenkel, a real estate broker, was born April 14, 1912, in Nebraska. He moved to Centralia in 1973 from Ketchikan, Alaska. He belonged to the First Assembly of God Church of Centralia. Survivors include his wife, Zetta, at home; two daughters, Gayle and husband Harold Molenaar of Tempe, Arizona, and Karen and husband Roger Koole of Chino, California; seven grandchildren; two stepsons; 13 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nellie Von Loh and Martha Hartwig, both of Nebraska, and Ava Hesser, Redding, California; two brothers, Walter Schenkel of Filer, Idaho, and Pat Schenkel of Yakima, Wash. A service was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the First Assembly of God Church, Centralia, with the Rev. Donald O. McGregor officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Memorial Park. Arrangements were under the direction of Sticklin Funeral Chapel.

SCHERBLER, Harry Karl, age 61, of Blaine, passed away January 8, 1998 in Everett. Mr. Scherbler was born January 29, 1936 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada to Michael and Anna Scherbler. A 25 year Whatcom County resident, he was a member of the Blaine American Legion Post. He leaves to survive his wife, Audrey Scherbler, of Blaine, and his daughter, Erica and her husband Chris of Salem, OR. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 1998 in the United Church of Christ in Blaine, WA. The arrangements are under the direction of Jerns McKinney Funeral Chapel, Blaine.

SCHEREMETA, Julia Mae - Bellingham resident Julia Mae Scheremeta died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1992, at her home. She was 51. Born July 26, 1941, in Medford, Ore., to Bernhard and Florence Dunkle Nelson, she enjoyed sewing and gardening. She married Robert Scheremeta on June 23, 1990. Survivors include her husband of the family home; sons Steven Anderson, Ken Anderson and Robert Anderson, all of Bellingham; daughters, Jacki Longstreth and Judi Hayes, both of Bellingham; sister Coral Wilson of Kelso; and one grandchild. Arrangements are pending with Jerns & LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.

SCHERER, Valentine, from Shelton, age 74, passed away Dec. 28th, 1984 in Shelton, WA. He was born Sept. 12, 1910 in S. St. Paul, Minn. He had lived in Bellingham for 10 years prior to moving to Shelton 5 yrs. ago. He had been employed as an auto mechanic for many years. He was a member of the Shelton Eagles No. 3862 & a member of the St. Edwards Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Scherer of Shelton; 1 daughter, Patricia Galivan of Olympia; 2 sons, Eugene Scherer of Shelton & Valentine Scherer of Stillwater, Minn.; 2 sisters, Theresa Bares, S. St. Paul, MN & Katherine Deering, S. St. Paul, MN; 1 brother, Matthew Scherer, S. St. Paul, MN; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Edwards Catholic Church Wed., Jan. 2nd, 1985, 12 noon, Rev. Kieran Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at the Shelton Memorial Park. SCHERES, Emma Rosetta, age 61, passed away at the family home, 321 Maple Street, Thursday, September 4, (1947). Mrs. Scheres had resided in this community for the past eleven years and was a member of the German Lutheran Church. Surviving relatives are the husband, John P., at home; four sons, Frank and John P. Jr., of Seattle, William, of Spokane, and Kenneth, of Tacoma; four daughters, Mrs. Katherine Proctor, of Tacoma, Miss Helen Scheres, of Spokane, Mrs. Grace Anderson, of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Dolly Plaster, of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Sweitzer in Canada and one brother, Charles Woessner, of Steele, N.D. Funeral services were conducted at the Funeral Home of Harlow-Hollingsworth, Saturday, September 6, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Thomas Allport officiating. Final resting place Woodlawn.

SCHERMERHORN, Clara of Lynden died at home Sunday, May 25, 1997. She was 87. A private service will be held. Born Aug. 7, 1909, to John and Siena Prange Rutgers in Lynden, she graduated from Lynden High School in 1927. Mrs. Schermerhorn lived in numerous locations in the United States and overseas before returning to Lynden from Tucson, Ariz., 15 years ago. She married John Kok on May 29, 1929, in Lynden; he preceded her in death. She married Dale Schermerhorn in 1947 in Tacoma; he also preceded her in death. A member of Second Christian Reformed Church, she was active in the Lynden Senior Center and enjoyed reading and playing the organ. Survivors include son Alvin Kok of Albany, Ore.; step-daughters Danna Clancy and Susan Olson, both of Tacoma; sister Dorothy Coburn of Everett; four grandchildren; and six [great] grandchildren. Arrangements are by Gillies Funeral Home.

SCHERNECK, Hattie, age 80, of 2429 West St., passed away in a local hospital Friday, March 30, (1956) following an extended illness. Mrs. Scherneck had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 51 years. She was a member of the Church of the Assumption and a charter member of the Altar Society. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Griswold and Mrs. Katherine Szymanski, both of Bellingham; one sister, Mrs. Mary McGee of Stillwater, Minn. Rosary will be said Sunday, April 1 at 8 p.m., within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home. Requiem High Mass will be sung Monday, April 2 at 9:30 a.m. within the Church of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. Bernard V. Cremer, celebrant. Interment Bayview.

SCHERTZ, Dianna Lynn - Funeral services for former St. Joseph Hospital program manager Dianna Lynn Schertz, 43, of 927 15th St. will (be) conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Gus Bess and Rev. Bill Orris officiating. Burial follows at Bayview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Jones Funeral Home. Mrs. Schertz died of pneumonia Wednesday (May 23, 1990) at St. Joseph Hospital. She was injured two months ago in a diving accident and never regained consciousness. Mrs. Schertz failed to resurface while accompanying a certification dive near Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey Island. She was born Sept. 7, 1946, in McCook, Nebr., and had been a resident of Bellingham since August, 1981. Mrs. Schertz was director of Adult and Children Day Care for St. Joseph Hospital and president of the Washington State Adult Day Care Association. She attended Evangelical Free Church and was very active in the YMCA. Survivors include two sons, Wesley Schertz and Gary Schertz of the family home; a daughter, Stephanie Schertz of the family home; her parents, Robert R. and Virginia Bolles of Long Beach, Calif.; and a brother, Robert W. Bolles of Indianapolis, Ind. Arrangements by Jones Funeral Home.

SCHEVING, Thorbjorg, age 82, of 1615 H St., Blaine, passed away Thurs., Nov. 2, 1978. At her request no services will be held. Cremation under the direction of Veroske McKinney Funeral Home.
