SANBERG, Arthur William, Dr., age 61 years, passed away Thursday, April 2, (1953) following a lingering illness. Dr. Sanberg was a graduate of the Northwest Dental School. He had resided in Bellingham for the past five years and was formerly of Seattle. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Carl Sanberg, of Pennsylvania; three brothers and two sisters. The remains were forwarded by the Westford-Beck Funeral Home to the Evans Funeral Home in Seattle where services are pending.SANCHEZ, Alda (Sickles) born 1907 in Big Piney, Wyoming, passed away August 22, 1988 in Yakima. She is survived by her husband John Sanchez of Desert Aire. Sisters Lottie Moffat & Dwaine Finney; daughters Betty Jean Brown of Bellingham, Shirley Haines of Joseph, OR, Carol Kinsey of Kennewick; 15 grandchildren; numerous great & great-great grandchildren & nieces & nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday August 25 at 1 p.m. in the Church at Desert Aire, Mattawa, WA.
SANCHEZ, Clara, 28 years of age, passed away at the Cushman hospital, Tacoma, Thursday, June 20, (1946). Surviving relatives are the husband, Leo Sanchez, and two children, Annette and Charles, at Marietta; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Celestine; one brother, Clifford Celestine; four sisters, Sadie Solomon, Grace Egawa, Emma Ough and Bernadine Cultee, and the grandmother, Emma Balch, besides several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, at the Lummi church, with Father Grier officiating. Interment will be in Lummi cemetery under the direction of the Monroe Mortuary, of Ferndale.
SANCHEZ, Ethel, age 79, of 100 1/2 Prospect St., passed away in a local hospital Saturday, November 16, (1963). A 20 year resident of Bellingham, Mrs. Sanchez was formerly employed by the Leopold Hotel and was a member of the Unity Church of Truth. Survivors are one brother, Charles Mullikin and one sister Mrs. Wanda Betsinger both of Bellingham; two nieces and one nephew. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by the Rev. Joel Boehr Tuesday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m. followed by cremation.
SANCHEZ, Jolene Paulita, age 21, of Bellingham, WA passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997 at home. Born November 10, 1975 in Anacortes, WA to Frank and Barbara Sanchez, she graduated from Sehome High School in 1994 and attended Skagit Valley Community College. Despite a valiant struggle with brain tumors, she was able to find great enjoyment in life always with humor and strength of character. Jolene, who had to figure how to reach, how to hold, how to walk--but who reached farther than anyone guessed. She extended herself into candlelight benefit marches, working with children at her childhood school--Happy Valley. Nor did she forsake books and learning or music--the flute she played at Sehome High School, and her year at Skagit Valley Community College. She went back after the stroke, not only to finish courses but to take new ones. The joy of getting back to horses was physical therapy for some, it was a romp with guardian angels for her. Survived by her parents Frank and Barbara Sanchez of Bellingham, grandparents, Frank and Petrita Sanchez of Seattle, WA; aunts, uncle and cousins. Funeral Mass will be Friday, February 28, 1997, 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend William Treacy, celebrant. Burial Bayview Cemetery. SANCIER, Gwendolyn A., age 67, passed away Sun. Jan. 5, (1986). Mrs. Sancier had resided in Bellingham since Oct. 1984 and was formerly from Twain Heart, Calif. She was very active in the Retarded Childrens Guild in Palo Alto. survived by her husband Leonard L.; 2 daughters, Alison Bell of Bellevue and Leslie Hooker of Grass Valley, Calif.; 1 son Gregory H. of Palo Alto; 3 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Isabelle Hinners and Mary Williamson, both of North Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina; brother, Robert B. Burgess Jr. of Walla Walla. Funeral services will be held Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Lann, officiating. SANCIER, Leonard Lester of Squalicum Harbor died Friday, June 17, 1994, of natural causes aboard his boat, the "Tartie I." He was 78. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. He was born Nov. 6, 1915, to Silas and Hester A. Houghtaling Sancier in Edgewater, N.J. He married Gwendolyn Burgess in 1944 in Edgewater. He worked for many years in the San Francisco area as an accountant in the construction industry. He retired in 1977. Mr. Sancier moved to Squalicum Harbor eight years ago to live aboard his boat. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution in Palo Alto, Calif., and served as a deacon of Palo Alto First Presbyterian Church. His wife preceded him in death in 1986. Survivors include son Gregory H. Sancier of San Jose, Calif.; daughters Alison W. Bell of Bellevue and Leslie A. Sancier-Hooker of Grass Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren. SAND, Agnes, age 84, of 508 F St., Blaine, was born in Skaftasellaysla, Iceland in 1902. Former resident of Pt. Roberts, died at her & her son John's home in Blaine March 2nd, (1987). She is survived by her children, Larry & Edith Sand, Dorothy & Blair Donaldson, Beverly Kimble, Mary Lou & Clifford Cory, John Sand; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous relatives in Iceland including her brother Jonas. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Einar & 2 grandchildren. Services will be held Sat., March 7th in the Jerns & McKinney Chapel followed by graveside services at the Blaine Cemetery conducted by Rev. Donald Walter. SAND, Charles Dewey, age 62, of 1220 1/2 State St., passed away in a local hospital Sunday, April 23, (1961). Mr. Sand had been a resident of this community for the past 55 years, was a retired pile driver engineer for Pacific American Fisheries, and was a member of Pile Driver Union Local No. 1824. Surviving relatives include a sister, Mrs. Effie Potvin of Bellingham; two brothers, Ray and Ernest, both of Bellingham, and numerous nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home. SAND, Charles T., age 85, of 2801 Donovan Avenue, husband of the late Margaret Sand who passed away in February, passed away in a local hospital Monday, April 5, (1954). Mr. Sand had resided in this community for the past 51 years; was a retired millworker and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Surviving relatives are three sons, Ernest, Ray and Dewey, all of Bellingham; one daughter, Mrs. Effie Potvin, of Bellingham; seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. SAND, Earl M., age 52, of Chuckanut Village, passed away in a local hospital, Sunday, November 20, (1949). Mr. Sand had resided in this community for the past 46 years and was a sawyer for Peterson's Cedarwood mill. Deceased was a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, Local 2-46 and leaves to survive his widow, Irma I., at home; one son, Earl L., of Bellingham; one daughter, Shirley, also at home; parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Sand, of Bellingham; three brothers, Dewey, Ray and Ernest and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Potvin, all of Bellingham. SAND, Einar E., age 79 of Blaine, died Thursday, March 10, 1983 at a local hospital. He was born in Norway and resided in this area for 21 years. He retired from Alaska Packers after 40 years service and is survived by his wife, Agnes; 2 sons, John of Seattle; Larry & his wife Edith Sand of Blaine; 3 daughters, Dorothy & husband Blair Danielson of Blaine; Beverly & husband George Kimble of Manchester; Mary Lou & husband Cliff Cory of Delta, B.C.; a sister, Gunda Thori of Norway; nephews, Albert Sand of Seattle; Reider Sand of Oregon; several nieces & nephews in Norway; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren. SAND, Jorgen, age 74 passed away in a Seattle hospital March 21, 1980. A former resident of Point Roberts prior to moving to Seattle, was a retired machinist. He leaves to survive 1 brother, Einar Sand of Blaine, 1 sister, Gunda Thori of Norway, also numerous nieces & nephews are residing in Norway, also Seattle, Blaine & Washington. SAND, Rosa Dell, widow of Oscar A. Sand, passed away Wed. Sept. 3, (1975) in a local nursing home. She was born in Oakland, Oregon, Dec. 11, 1888 and has been a resident of Bellingham since 1919. She was the manager of the Elk's Club Dining Room for 10 years, and was a member of the World War II Mothers Club which made hundreds of afghans for disabled servicemen. She is survived by a daughter, Vera Auguston, son Robert, grandchildren Jim Auguston and Daleah Sand, all of Bellingham, Steve Auguston of San Diego, four great grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements made by Peoples Memorial Assoc. At her request there will be no service.

SAND, Wilma R., age 54 years, of 1630 Iron St., passed away in a local hospital Wednesday, Nov. 14, (1956). Mrs. Sands (sic) had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 34 years and was a member of the Birchwood Presbyterian Church. She leaves to survive her husband, Ray T. Sands (sic) at the family home; one son, Clinton R. Sands (sic) of this city; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Arenn of Vancouver, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Wolford of Prosser, and Theodore Wolford of Mt. Home, Ida.; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Berquist, of this city; Mrs. Jennie Berkholtz, of Seattle; and Mrs. Alice Howard of Squim, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home with Rev. Gordon Crider, pastor, officiating. Interment Greenacres.
SANDAL, Sigval, age 75, of 3800 Broad St., passed away in a local hospital, Sunday, June 4, (1961). Mr. Sandal had been a resident of this community for the past 53 years, was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, and was a retired utility man for the Bellingham Water Dept. Surviving relatives include the widow, Marie at the family home; a son, Richard S. of Bellingham, and numerous nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Pastor Don Taylor, Wednesday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. Final resting place, Bay View Cemetery.
SANDBERG, Bennett G., 89, who served several terms on the Bellingham City Council in the late 1950s, died of a heart attack Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1987) at his home. Mr. Sandberg, 1100 High St., lived in Bellingham all of his life. He was graduated from high school in 1916, enlisted in the U.S. Navy the next year and served with the Atlantic fleet during World War I. He received an honorable discharge in 1919. Mr. Sandberg married to Helcie G. Senker in 1927. She died in 1979. He used to run a cigar store on Holly Street and was a representative for several clothing manufacturers during the 1930s. He also worked for the old Bellingham Shipyard Co. during World War II. Mr. Sandberg became a real estate broker after the war, an occupation he pursued until retirement. He and his wife were active in civic affairs and with the Children's Orthopedic Guild. During his later years, Mr. Sandberg frequently visited the Maple Street Fire Station and was made an honorary captain shortly before his death. Surviving are two nephews and a niece. At his request, there will be no services. Burial will [be] in Bayview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.
SANDBERG, Douglas L. - Veterinarian Douglas L. Sandberg, of 175 E. Wiser Lake Road, Lynden, died at his home from cancer on Monday, Sept. 6, 1993. He was 71. The son of Oscar and Gladys (Knutson) Sandberg, Doug was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on Jan. 21, 1922. Shortly after he moved with his family to the Tacoma area and graduated from Gig Harbor High School. During World War II he served with the Navy SeaBees. On June 9, 1946 he was married to Gloria Gehri in Tacoma. He graduated from the College of Puget Sound and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University. From 1953 to 1984 he practiced in Lynden. He had attended Good News Fellowship near Ferndale. He was also a member of the Washington State and Whatcom County Veterinary Associations. He is survived by his wife Gloria of the family home; daughter Patty and husband Ron Schaler of Lynden; son Doug Sandberg and wife Tearesa of Wrangell, Alaska; a grandson; and sister, Helen Sorenson of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Private family services were conducted today. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Lynden. Services were under the care of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.
SANDBERG, Halcie G., of 1100 High St., passed away Mon. Sept. 17, 1979 in Bellingham. She was born in Bellingham and had been a lifetime resident of this community. She was a member of the Unity Church of Truth. She was a charter member and past president of Whatcom County Orthopedic Association and Visiting Nurses Association. She is survived by her husband, Bennett of Bellingham. Funeral services will be held Thursday Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Eddy Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Bay View Cemetery.
SANDBERG, Lawrence A. "Sandy" a longtime Bellingham resident whose career included the building of churches and warships, died Tuesday (July 2, 1985) at the age of 90. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Northwest Baptist Church, the structure he helped build and where he had been a member of the congregation since 1912, when it was known as Champion Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Bruce Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Ten Mile Cemetery. Mr. Sandberg died at Shuksan Convalescent Center, where he had resided for five years. He was born May 16, 1895, in Chicago. After living in Minnesota, his family came to Preston in King County, and then to Bellingham in 1907. His father, Albert Sandberg, was a shingleweaver. After trying the printing business, Mr. Sandberg became an apprentice pipefitter for the gas company here, and then worked as a plumber for a local contractor. During World War I he worked at the Bremerton Navy Yard, building submarines, and during World War II he was plumbing superintendent for Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co., where Navy minesweepers were built. He retired in 1960 as manager of Western Steel & Salvage Co. Mr. Sandberg was a charter member of the board of the Light House Mission, on which he served for 25 years - 10 as its chairman. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, he sang in and directed the Swedish Male Chorus. His wife, Tillie, died in 1984. Survivors include a son, William H. Sandberg of Everson; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister.
SANDBERG, Louis Ralph - A wake for Louis Ralph "Sandy" Sandberg will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club in Langley. At his request, no funeral will be held. Mr. Sandberg of Greenbank died Wednesday, July 20, 1994, at his home. He was 59. Born Nov. 13, 1934 to Solo (sic) and Eva Sandberg in Bellingham, he graduated from Bellingham High school and from Western Washington University in 1956. He worked for two summers with the U.S. Border Patrol and served in the U.S. Air Force. After graduation, he worked for Safeco Insurance Co. He spent some time in Oregon and moved to Whidbey Island in 1967. He bought Whidbey Insurance in Freeland, and in 1985 merged with Porter Whidbey Insurance creating Porter Whidbey Insurance. He married Bobbie Willis on Oct. 4, 1991, in Reno, Nev. A member of the Freeland Fire Department, he also was a Port of South Whidbey commissioner and president of the Freeland Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and was past president of the Shrine Club. He loved people, jazz and games, especially backgammon and cribbage. Happiest when helping others or on his boat, he especially enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife of the family home; daughter Laura Nordberg of Auburn; son Garth Sandberg of South Whidbey; stepson Robert Watson of Sea-Tac; stepdaughter Rhonda Osborne of Bothell; former wife Joanne Sandberg of South Whidbey; one grandson, an uncle, John Sandberg of Middle River, Minn.; and several cousins.
SANDBERG, Matilda A. - Funeral services for Matilda A. "Tillie" age 89, of 409 York St., will be Thursday Aug. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Northwest Baptist Church with Dr. James Mason officiating. Interment Ten Mile Cemetery. Mrs. Sandberg passed away Aug. 27, 1984. She is survived by her husband Lawrence A. SANDBERG, Roy, "Sandy" a long-time coach, teacher and administrator in Washington high schools and colleges, has died (March 8, 1979) at the age of 82. Sandberg was born in Bellingham and graduated from Bellingham High School. After Navy service in World War I, he graduated from Washington State University in 1923 with degrees in education and economics. Over the years, Sandberg taught and coached at many schools including Wenatchee, Sedro Woolley, Ellensburg, Washington State University and the University of Puget Sound. He spent seven years as a football coach at the University of Washington. He retired in 1962, but then continued as superintendent for Clark County schools until 1970. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, two sons, a brother, Bennett of Bellingham, a sister and three grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Acacia Funeral Home in Seattle.
SANDBERG, Sulo T., age 74, of 2206 Williams, passed away Sat., Nov. 4, 1978. Mr. Sandberg had resided in Whatcom Co. for the past 40 years & was a retired Immigration Officer working 30 years for the Border Patrol. He was a past master of Nooksack Lodge No. 105 F&AM, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Nile Temple and Northwest Shrine Club. He leaves to survive his wife, Florence of the family home; 1 son, Louis R. & 2 grandchildren, Laura & Garth Sandberg all of Freeland, WA; 4 sisters, Sandi Lempi and Wilma Sandburg, both of El Paso, Texas, Ina Hanway of Minnesota and Helmi Winkenwerder of Yakima; 2 brothers, John of Middle River, Minn. & Victor of Minn. SANDE, Brita H., age 86, of Route No. 2, Everson, passed away at her home Wednesday, Oct. 22, (1952). Mrs. Sande had resided in that community for the past seven years and previously had lived in Bellingham for 25 years. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Sylliaasen, of Seattle; a grandson, Kermit Sande, of Route No. 2, Everson; a granddaughter, Mrs. Jane Will, of Rochester, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. SANDE, Evelyn Viola (Thompson) passed away Thursday, August 15, 2002 in Bellingham. Evelyn was born on February 18, 1914 to Knut and Annie Thompson in Everson, WA. She worked for many years at and retired from Mills Electric in Bellingham. Evelyn was preceded in death just six months ago by her husband of sixty-one years, Kermit. Evelyn most loved Kermit and their family. She was a talented seamstress, and sewed whatever any of the family needed, including wedding dresses, prom dresses, aprons for the Calico Cupboard Restaurant, skating costumes, upholstery & headliners for airplanes and even a windsock for the airstrip. She grew beautiful flowers and loved sharing them with others. Her devotion to her family and love for beauty will be a lasting legacy for us all to remember. SANDE, Nels, age 55 years, of 3701 West Maplewood, passed away at a local hospital Thursday, October 1, (1953) following a short illness. Mr. Sande had resided in Bellingham for the past 10 years, and was employed as a carpenter for the Bellingham Shipyards. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the Central Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. William Matthews Post 1585, the Sons of Norway, the Norden Lodge No. 319 of Havre, Montana, and the Carpenters & Joiners Union Local No. 756. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Sande; his mother, Mrs. Martha Sande in Norway; one brother, H. M. Sande, in Moorehead, Minn.; one brother and two sisters in Norway. SANDEL, Franklyn S., born March 22, 1896, in Thorpe, Wash., died Dec. 1, 1979 at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, Wash. He was a veteran of WWI & WWII; prior to WWI he was a seafairer on sailing ships and after WWI he was employed with the Merchant Marines. In later years following WWII, he was the factory representative for furniture industry in the Northwest. He was a member of the Blue Lodge No. 36 F & AM of Mt. Vernon; The Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Bellingham, Wash., The Nile Temple Shrine of Seattle, Wash.; the Whidbey Island Shrine Club; The American Legion Post No. 1 of Seattle; the Navy League of Oak Harbor and a life member of the National Rifle Assoc. He is survived by his wife, Alberta at the family home in Oak Harbor; 1 daughter, Mrs. Patricia Schulmeister of Seattle; 1 grandson, Mr. Dee Schulmeister of Seattle; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Quinn of Anacortes, Wash., Mrs. Helen Graf of Grayland, Wash., and Mrs. Donna Robinson of Seattle, Wa. Graveside services will be held Thurs. Dec. 6, 1979, at 11 a.m. from Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, Seattle, with Mark E. Anway 33rd degree Scottish Rite of Bellingham, officiating. SANDELL, Betty E., age 83 of Mt. Vernon, passed away May 20, 1979 in Mt. Vernon. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church Mt. Vernon, Golden Age Group, Meadow Grange. She is survived by 1 daughter; Mrs. Roy (Opal) Hoback of Mt. Vernon. 2 sons: Floyd Sandell of B'ham and Wesley Sandell of Lake Samish. 10 Grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. SANDELL, Wesley R., age 58 of 443 E. Lake Samish Dr., Bellingham died Tues. (Sept. 9, 1980) in a Seattle Hospital. He was born August 22, 1922 in Conway, WA. He was a veteran of WWII and a branch manager for Concrete Northwest, Arlington. SANDEN, Damon S. "Dave", 65, a former Bellingham resident, died Feb. 26, (1982) in Carpenteria, Calif., apparently of a heart attack. He was born Oct. 17, 1916, at Lincoln, Neb. From 1970 to 1979, he was the space and schedules administrator at Western Washington University. He is survived by his former wife, Betty Terry, a sister, an uncle and a niece. Funeral services were held today at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Home in Santa Barbara, Calif.
SANDEN, Elizabeth R., age 82 years, of 716 Twenty-first Street, passed away at a local hospital, Tuesday, May 4, (1948) following a short illness. Mrs. Sanden had been a resident of Bellingham for the past forty-three years and was a member of the Swedish Lutheran Church. She is survived by one son, Arthur G. Sanden, of the home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 6, at 1:30 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home, with Rev. Thomas Allport, pastor of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating, followed by cremation.
SANDER, Emma C. of Bellingham died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997. She was 84. At her request, no service was held. Burial was in Bayview Cemetery. She was born March 4, 1913, to William and Emma Knirck Keller in New Salem, N.D. Mrs. Sander was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, in 1988. Survivors include sister Minnie Keller of Bellingham, niece Verna Rae Gardner of Bellingham and cousins. Arrangements are by Jones-Moles Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sander was a sixty year resident of this community; a member of Royal Neighbors of America, and a member of the Olivette Circle of St. James Presbyterian Church. SANDER, Johanna Kelln of Bellingham, died Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at the age of 92. She was born October 21, 1905 to Fred and Karoline (Schneider) Kirschman in a village in the Ukraine by the Caspian Sea. Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1912 and she grew up on the plains of northern Texas. In 1926 she married Solomon Kelln. He preceded her in death in 1956. They were blessed with three sons, Clarence, John and Allen; John passed away when he was an infant. Johanna was very active in indoor and outdoor work and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Temple Church in Bellingham. In 1965 she married LeRoy Sander, and in 1978 he preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Clarence and wife Betty Kelln of Lynden, and Allen and wife Wilma Kelln of Bellingham; one sister Christine Rehm of Lynden; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and many other relatives. Her brother Otto Kirschman of Bellingham died the same day. Visitation will be Sunday, January 4, 1998 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Moles Funeral Home. SANDER, Melvin H., 80, of 2410 Moore St., a lifelong Bellingham resident, died Friday (Dec. 9, 1988) in a local nursing home. Mr. Sander was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Bellingham. SANDERS, Elizabeth Ann, 63, of 6800 Enterprise Road, Ferndale died at St. Joseph Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 1, 1992. SANDERS, Everett C., age 76 of 2188 Hawthorn St., Ferndale, passed away at home Sunday August 19, 1984. Everett came to Ferndale in 1957 as superintendent of schools, had also been a school superintended in Ridgefield, he was the 1st chief administrator of Whatcom Community College & the 1st Director of the Whatcom County O.E.O. he was a member of the United Church of Ferndale where he had been very active, & he also had been active in the Boy Scouts of America. SANDERS, Lester F., 79, of 2028 Niagara Place, died Thursday (June 30, 1988) in Bellingham. At his request, there will be no services. The body was cremated by Greenacres Crematorium. Mr. Sanders died in his home in Pomeroy last Saturday (April 8, 1989). He was born on Aug. 30, 1943, in Bellingham to Stan and Flavia Sanders. SANDERSON, Bernadine R., 74, a longtime employee of the children's department of the Bellingham Public Library, died of a heart ailment Thursday (June 25, 1987) in Bellingham. Mrs. Sanderson, 610 W. Maryland St., was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Detroit, Mich. She married Edward A. Sanderson on Valentine's Day, 1942, in Detroit and had lived in Bellingham 19 years. Mrs. Sanderson served on numerous boards and committees and sang in the choir of First Congregational Church. She was former president of the local chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha and contributed many years to Reach for Recovery, a support group for women recovering from mastectomies. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, E. David Sanderson of LaCanada, Calif., and Michael Richard Sanderson of Los Altos, Calif.; two daughters, Gayle Ballard of Pasadena, Calif., and Cathy Ann Hlebasko, of Arcadia, Calif.; a sister, Gladys Lennon of Covina, Calif.; two brothers, Warren Rachwitz of Glendora, Calif., and Raymond Rachwitz of California; and four grandchildren. SANDERSON, Harry C. - Memorial services for Harry C. "Sandy" Sanderson were held Saturday in Washington Memorial Park in Seattle. Mr. Sanderson, 65, of Quincy died Nov. 29, (1988) in Seattle. He was born in Whatcom County and lived here until he was 18. He graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1941. He retired recently from Alaska Airlines, where he was vice president of maintenance. SANDIFUR, Robert I., 54, resident of 447 Modoc Way, LaConner, died in Everett, Aug. 7, (1978) result of an auto accident. Born May 24, 1924 in Denver, Colorado. Graduate of University of Washington. Served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII as an ensign pilot. Mr. Sandifur was a salesman in insurance and real estate and form[er]ly owned and operated the Birch Bay Golf Resort for 12 years. SANDISON, Earle W. – A service for Earle W. Sandison of Kailua, Hawaii, formerly of Bellingham, was held Feb. 17 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Mr. Sandison died of complications caused by pneumonia Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Hawaii. He was 90. Born Aug 6, 1909 to J. W. and Harriet (Woodiwiss) Sandison in Bellingham, he graduated from Whatcom High School and the University of Washington. Mr. Sandison taught Sunday school at Garden Street United Methodist Church. Mr. Sandison joined E.R. Squib & Sons of Portland, Ore. During World War II he served in Europe as an officer in the U.S. Navy, specializing in Gyrocompass and fire-control systems. Mr. Sandison spent many years in Cuba and India, where he set up and managed pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. In 1955, he joined Mead Johnson & Co. of Honolulu, where he managed the company's Pacific operations. In the late 1950s, he was named president of the Medical Service Representatives of Hawaii. In 1974, he retired but continued to practice in Oahu hospitals and retail pharmacies. Survivors include his wife Maxine of the family home; son Ian Sandison of Hawaii; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Sandison had resided in this community for the past forty-three years and was a member of the Garden Street Methodist Church and the Sinawik club, also a member of the St. Luke's Assistance League and Bellingham Women's Music Club. Surviving relatives are the husband, J. Wilbur, at home; one son, Earle W., of Havana, Cuba, and one sister, Miss Gertrude Woodiwiss, of Bellingham. The remains are at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth, where services will be conducted by the Rev. Alexander P. Alton, Saturday, November 29, at 3 p.m. The remains will be forwarded to Windsor, Ont., Canada, Monday, December 1, for interment.

Mr. Sandison was a commercial photographer here for the past 58 years; was a member of the Methodist Church, Kingsville, Ontario; attended the Garden Street Methodist Church; was a charter and honorary member of the Bellingham Kiwanis Club; member and past master of Bellingham Bay Lodge No. 44, F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies; Nile Temple of Shrine, was a 33rd degree Mason. Survivors are one son, Earle W. Sandison, Honolulu, Hawaii; one grandson, Ian Sandison, Honolulu; one sister, Mrs. Jennie Guild; one half-brother, Romaine DeVitt, both of Kingsville, Ontario. J. W. Sandison, Photographer 58 Years DiesJ. Wilbur Sandison, a photographer in Bellingham for 58 years, was found dead in his studio at 126 1/2 Holly St. Wednesday morning. Death came from natural causes. A native of Ontario, Canada, who came to this country in 1904, Mr. Sandison was 88 years old at death. He was a well-known photographer in this area and had his studio located in the same building on Holly Street since he opened it. He lived at 801 Garden St. He began his photographic career in Vancouver, B.C., but was engaged, for some time before coming to Bellingham, as a practical photographer in California and the Hawaiian Islands. A biographical history of Whatcom County of the 1920's describes him as "widely known throughout this section of the northwest for the high quality of the products of his art." He was a member of the Bellingham Kiwanis Club, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was a Scottish Rite Mason and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. SANDLUND, Sven Erik, age 61, of 3868 Cliffside Dr., passed away Sat. May 19, 1990. Mr. Sandlund was born (April 30, 1929) in Husum, Sweden and had resided in Bellingham for the past 14 years; was a graduate of the University of Malmo in Sweden with a degree in business; was a commercial fisherman, owned & fished the boat "F/V Vallhala Star"; he enjoyed photography and sportsfishing. At age 42 he became a journeyman carpenter. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 194, VFW, Senior Activity Center and a veteran of the U.S. Army; he worked as a real estate salesman for 16 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann. He leaves to survive his son John Erik of City; a brother, Lennart Rolf Sandlund of Sweden; a great aunt, Greta Ecklund, Bellevue; a cousin Harold Ecklund of Los Angeles. SANDMANN, Alton William, 84, died Wednesday (May 10, 1990) in Bellingham. Mr. Sandmann was born on June 13, 1905, in Evan, Minnesota, and had lived in Bellingham since 1961. He was owner/operator with his wife Evelyn, of the Shangri-La Motel until his retirement. Mr. Sandmann was a volunteer with the RSVP in their house security check program through the Bellingham Police Department for many years. He was a member of the Garden Street United Methodist Church. Mr. Sandmann is survived by his wife Evelyn, a son Jerry Sandmann and wife Joan of Seattle, a daughter Donna Roper of Bellingham, and three granddaughters, Tracy Sandmann, Kelly Roper and Terri Roper. He is also survived by two sisters, Laura Rose of Morgan, Minnesota and Ruth Birkemeyer of Mankato, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at Garden Street United Methodist Church on Monday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m.

SANDONA, Teresa, age 85, of 2726 Alderwood Ave., passed away Monday, Nov. 22, (1976). She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 51 years. She leaves to survive two daughters, Mrs. Nina Sternhagen of Bellingham, Mrs. Irene Ryan of Bellingham; one sister, Mrs. Adel Dauria of New Jersey; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. SANDS, Barbara Ireland, age 76, died at her home in Bellingham on July 5, 2005. She was born June 18, 1929 in Bellingham to Kenneth and Martha Ireland. Barbara spent her summers on Samish Island and later on Orcas Island where she loved spending time with her family. She attended the Campus School and graduated from Bellingham High. In 1951 she graduated from Whitman College with a BA in music. While at Whitman College she was an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and cherished her sorority friendships. After living in San Francisco and studying at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, she returned to Bellingham in the early 1960's to take over the music studio of her former teacher, Marjorie Brighouse. Her 40-year career as a music teacher touched the lives of many people in Whatcom County. Barbara was dedicated to her students and the encouragement of music education. Barbara's contributions to the arts in Bellingham are innumerable and those who worked with her saw her as a true visionary. Her quiet determination, imagination and strong leadership in the 1970's and 80's tremendously impacted the current success of the Mt. Baker Theatre, Allied Arts and the Whatcom Museum of History & Art. Barbara was a member of the Washington State Arts Commission and Chairman of the Municipal Arts Commission. In 1986 she was awarded the Mayor's Arts Award for her promotion of the arts in Bellingham. She was president of the Whatcom Museum Docents from 1974-75 and a major participant of the Upstairs/Downstairs Fashion Show Fundraiser. Barbara remained involved in museum fundraising and promotion until very recently. She was also a member of the Monday Club, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, and numerous other organizations. Barbara's garden brought her years of happiness and peace and she worked diligently at keeping it alive. Her famous strawberry jam and plum chutney will be missed by friends and family. Barbara was an adventurer who loved traveling and particularly cherished the trips to Greece, Turkey, Norway and Italy with her daughter. She will forever be remembered as a woman of elegance, grace and impeccable taste; an amazing person whose spirit touched everyone it met with the twinkle of her incredible blue eyes.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Clint in 1989. She is survived by daughter Alexandra Sands (husband John Mills) of Bellingham, sister Marcia Brookbank of Sonoma, CA (children Ursula, Jake and Phoebe Brookbank), brother David Ireland of San Francisco, CA (children Ian Ireland and Shaughn Niland), sister Judy Ireland of San Francisco, CA (children Madison, Laura and Toby Cox). He was born May 18, 1926, in Bellingham. He was a Bellingham High School graduate and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Sands was a graduate of General Motors Institute in mechanical engineering. Mr. Sands was owner and operator of Sands Pontiac and British Motors for 23 years. He was a commercial fisherman and owner of the "Sonny Boy" for 12 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellingham Golf and Country Club and Bellingham Yacht Club. He was a former member of Central Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the family home; three sons, James Sands, William Gregory Sands and John Paul Sands, all of Bellingham; two daughters, Cathryn Sands and Martha Alexandra Sands of Bellingham; five grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. SANDSBERRY, Jack Coleman of 1230 A East Village Lane died at home Tuesday, June 17, 1997, of complications from malignant melanoma. He was 71. At his request, no services will be held. Born May 23, 1926, in Paris, Texas, he lived in Bellingham since 1981. He married Marian Crutchfield on Dec. 30, 1947, in Camden, Ark. Mr. Sandsberry served in the Navy for two years during World War II and attended North Texas State University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees. He worked as a teacher and college instructor before being recalled to the Navy in 1952. He served until 1975, retiring as a captain. His naval career took him to Hawaii, Japan, Morocco, Cuba, Washington, D.C., and the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. He and his wife made their winter home in Green Valley, Ariz., since 1990. Mr. Sandsberry was an avid golfer and a member of Bellingham Golf and Country Club and Desert Hills Golf Club in Green Valley. He also enjoyed the outdoors, music, cards and puzzles. Survivors include his wife; daughter Lynn Sandsberry of Taipei, Taiwan; son Scott Sandsberry of Wenatchee and Mark Sandsberry of Auburn; two grandchildren; and one niece. Arrangements are by Whatcom Cremation Association.

Mrs. Sandstedt was a seventy-three year resident of this community, and was a member of the FOE Auxiliary. Mr. Sandstedt was born in Quincey, Illinois on December 20, 1885 and came to Washington in 1905. He lived in Bellingham & Pasco since 1968; was a retired Car Foreman for the Milwaukie Railroad; a member of the Congregational Church; Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Bellingham; Port Angeles Lodge No. 69, F & AM (Masonic Order); held a 60 year pin in the Lodge; Coast Guard Reserve during World War II. He leaves to survive 1 nephew, Charles C. E. (Sandy) Sandstedt of Pasco, Washington; 1 step-son, Ober Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona; 1 niece, Christine Fagalde of Rathdrum, Idaho; 5 grand-nieces; 1 grandnephew; 3 great-grandnieces; 3 great-grandnephews; 2 great great grandnieces. She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Jackie was born April 23, 1943 in Burlington, the oldest of five children, and the only girl in the family. She attended primary school in Marysville and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1961. She later obtained her nursing degree from Bellingham Vo-Tech and worked as a licensed practical nurse in numerous nursing homes in Whatcom County area. Jackie will be remembered for her love of children and animals. We will all miss the frequent hugs she shared with those around her. She is survived by a son, Michael Satra of Ferndale; her daughters Serene Beckman of Spokane, Serill Wohr of Rantoul, Illinois, and Donna Satra Duncan of Stanwood; her parents Ralph Clausen of Hillsboro, Oregon and Shirlee Clausen of Bellingham; 3 brothers, Michael Clausen of Ferndale, and Stephen Clausen of Bellingham; and 3 grandchildren. SANDVIK, Elvira D., 73, who lived in Bellingham for many years before she moved to Seattle in 1952, died Monday (Feb. 29, 1988) in a Seattle hospital. She was born March 20, 1914, in Chicago, Ill.., and was a member of Berean Church of Seattle. SANDVIK Oluf A., age 79, of Route 1, Custer, passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, March 15, (1955). Mr. Sandvik had resided in that community for the past 52 years; was a retired fisherman and for the past few years was actively engaged in farming. Deceased was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bellingham, and leaves to survive his widow, Elizabeth, at home; two sons, Orville O. of Seattle and Gordon E. Sandvik of Provo, Utah; one daughter, Mrs. Esther Krauss of Bellingham; seven grandchildren and numerous other relatives in Norway. SANDVIK, Orville G., age 48, of 4802 1st Ave. NW. Seattle, passed away at Kodiak, Alaska, Sunday, Jan. 31, (1960). Mr. Sandvik had been a resident of Bellingham most of his life until moving to Seattle 10 years ago and worked from the Kachemak Fisheries, Inc., as the skipper of the crab boat "Fearless." Surviving relatives include the widow, Elvira at home; a son, Orville O. Jr., at the family home; a daughter, Mrs. Vance Coons of Anchorage, Alaska; mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Sandvik of Bellingham; a brother, Gordon Sandvik of Provo, Utah, and a sister, Mrs. Esther Krause of Bellingham. SANDVIK, Tilmand B. of Bellingham died Wednesday, December 31, 1997. He was 89. A private family service will be held. Mr. Sandvik was born October 8, 1908 in Seattle. He married Lillie Ohlander in 1931 and had resided in the Bellingham area since 1972. He retired as a U.S. Customs officer and enjoyed fishing and walking. Survivors include his wife of the family home; sons Loren Sandvik of Bailey, Colo. and Dick Sandvik of Sisters, Ore.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. SANFORD, Edward Jesse, 83, 714 H St., Custer, died Saturday, June 13, 1992, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Grande Prairie, B.C., to William and Jenny Sanford. He had lived in Whatcom County for 40 years. Mr. Sanford served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He was employed as a long haul truck driver and a logger. SANFORD, James L., age 90, of Sumas, passed away at his home Tuesday, Sept. 26, (1961) following an extended illness. A pioneer of Whatcom County, Mr. Sanford homesteaded in the Maple Falls area in 1902. For the past two years he had made his home in Sumas. SANFORD, Virginia D. - Graveside services for Virginia D. Sanford, 100 Shuksan St., Everson, will be conducted on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Nooksack Cemetery with the Rev. Sharon Hare officiating. Mrs. Sanford, 79, died in a Tacoma hospital on Sunday, May 1, 1994. She had become ill while traveling in Texas and had been moved to the hospital in Tacoma a few days prior to her death. The daughter of Daniel and Hazel (Nicholls) Cogswell, Virginia was born in Seattle on Nov. 9, 1914. She was married to Joseph Sanford at Lowell, Wash. on May 29, 1937 and in 1946 they moved to Everson. She had been employed as a clerk at the Everson Livestock Auction and later at Hinote's Furniture Store, Virginia was a member of the Everson Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the Everson-Nooksack Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed music, was a regular member of the church choir and also played guitar and sang with senior citizen groups. She is survived by two sons, Dan Sanford and wife Barbara of Tacoma and Joel Sanford of Florence, Ore.; four grandchildren; and three brothers, Richard Cogswell of Mineral Wells, Texas, David Cogswell of Bellevue, Neb. and Leonard Nicholls of San Marcos, Calif. She was preceded by her husband Joseph in 1971; a sister, Louise Murphy, and a brother, Daniell Cogswell. Services are under the care of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.
SANFORD, William Berner 'Bernie' of Maple Falls passed away at Christian Rest Home in Lynden on Thursday, April 29, 1993 at the age of 89. A funeral service was held on Monday in the chapel of Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden with Rev. Charles Coats officiating. Burial followed in Greenacres Memorial Park. Mr. Sanford was a lifetime Maple Falls resident, born there on April 19, 1904, the son of James L. and Florence Homes Sanford. He grew up in Maple Falls and graduated from the former Maple Falls High School. In Bellingham on Dec. 21, 1933 he was married to Loie Christen and she survives her husband in Sumas. Other survivors include his four sons, Morris Sanford and wife Rose of Bellingham, Wayne Sanford and wife Kay of Sumas and Barry Sanford and wife Donna and Terry Sanford, all of Bellingham, daughter Lynnette McGinnis and husband Jack of Seattle; sister Lucille Hamilton of Forks; brother Tom Sanford of Bellingham; and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandsons. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brother Byron Sanford. Services and arrangements were under the care of Gillies Funeral Home of Lynden.

SANGUINET, Del, age 60 years, of 3009 Coolidge Drive, passed away at a local hospital Friday, Nov. 28, (1952) following a lingering illness. Mr. Sanguinet had been a resident of Bellingham since 1934 and was a well-known building contractor. He is survived by his wife, Fanchon Sanguinet, at home, and four sisters in St. Louis, Mo. SANNA, Maria G. of Lynden will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lynden. Mrs. Sanna died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Christian Healthcare Center. She was 77. She was born Oct. 29, 1919, to Adelard and Alphoncine Dubois Camire in Saskatchewan, Alberta. Mrs. Sanna lived in Long Island, N.Y., for more than 30 years before moving to Lynden in 1981. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Delta Grange and was active at the Lynden Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper, in 1985; a brother, Alfred Camire; and sisters Alma Parent and Rose Durand. Survivors include brother Albert Camire of Port Coquitlam, B.C., and sister Liliene Lien of Maple Ridge, B.C. Arrangement are by Westford Funeral Home.
SANREGRET, Mabel of Sedro-Woolley died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Skagit Valley Convalescent Center. She was 97. Services will be in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Born Aug. 3, 1900, to Simon and Anna Hillje Marr in Amity, Mo., she grew up in Bellingham. She graduated from Whatcom High School in 1918, attended Bellingham Normal School, now Western Washington University, and a business school in Bellingham. She married Howard Sanregret Nov. 16, 1932, in Bellingham. He died in 1972. Mrs. Sanregret lived in Sault Ste. Marie for many years. She managed hotels with her husband and was a certified public accountant. She moved to Skagit County in 1980. She enjoyed traveling worldwide. Survivors include her nephew, Robert Marr of Bellingham. Arrangements are by Hulbush Funeral Home.
SANREGRET, Oscar, aged 63 years, beloved husband of Adele, passed away at the family home on Sunset highway, Friday morning, March 11, (1932) after a brief illness. Mr. Sanregret had been a resident of Bellingham for the past thirteen years, and leaves a host of friends who will mourn his passing. SANSREGRET, Lillian Aileen, age 99 of Bellingham, passed away December 28, 1997 at St. Francis Extended Health Care. Mrs. Sansregret was born August 6 1898 in Hancock, Michigan to Paul and Katherine Pickkrainen. She came to Whatcom County in 1923 and was a member of Assumption Catholic Church where she sang in the church choir. She provided transportation for the nuns to Lummi for C.C.D. classes, volunteered for the American Cancer Society and she was manager of a millinery shop. She is survived by her son, Leo Sansregret and his wife Jane of Gresham, Oregon; three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass, celebrated by Father Patrick Freitag, will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 1997, in the Assumption Catholic Church followed by burial in Bayview Cemetery. SANTLER, Fredric F. - A memorial service for Fredric F. Santler, 78, father of Dorothy Ann "Dee" Guyer and Stephen Santler of Everson, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walla Walla, with the Rev. Gerald Snapp officiating. Dr. Santler, of 1746 Hilbrooke Drive, Walla Walla, a professor emeritus at Whitman College in Walla Walla, died Saturday (April 21, 1989) at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness. He was born June 17, 1910, in Austria, where he attended the University of Vienna, and met his wife, Sophia. The couple came to Washington separately, and were married May 5, 1932, in Camas. Santler taught languages and literature at Whitman College from 1932 to 1975, when he retired. A daughter, Joan Santler Hanna, died in 1972. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dorothy Ann Guyer of Everson and Deborah Stanea of Spokane; two sons, Frederic T. Santler of Seattle and Stephen R. Santler of Everson; and three brothers in Austria.
SANTOS, Tony J., age 60, of Custer, Wa. (sic), passed away November 17, 1994 in Bellingham, WA. Mr. Santos was born April 4, 1934 in Niles, CA to Anthony C. and Mary L. Costa Santos. A 25 year Whatcom County resident, he owned and operated Northern Communication and Electronics for 25 years. Tony most recently attended the Good News Fellowship Church in Ferndale; was a member of numerous lodges, National Rifle Assoc., and the Bellingham Yacht Club. He was a pilot and a very active ham radio operator. He served in the Air Force, stationed in Alaska; enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs and the Washington and Oregon Coasts in his RV. Survivors are his wife, Marjorie Santos, of Custer; son, Scott Santos and his wife, Rachel, of Portland, Oregon; two daughters, Kristie Hubbard and her husband Jason of Portland, Cherie Greenfield and her husband Rod of Wenatchee; brother, Elmo Santos of CA; two sisters, Sherri Brenner of Fremont, Michigan and Ann Holman of Centralia, WA; five grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Santos. A private family service was held Saturday in the Jerns LeVeck Chapel. The arrangements and service are under the direction of The Jerns LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
