FOSTER, John Dean, age 87, passed peacefully on June 2, 2007 after a life of extraordinary accomplishment. He was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he met and married his wife of sixty-one-years, Jean Foster. He graduated from the University of Tulsa in engineering. Combining a natural feel for flying with an engineer's curiosity, John was assigned as a test pilot during World War II. He helped to develop new navigational systems and high performance modifications for commercial and combat aircraft. After the war, John graduated from Cal Tech and became a career engineer in the petroleum industry. He was instrumental in designing pipeline delivery systems across the United States. John was employed for over 40 years at AMOCO, and rose within its organization to high levels of responsibility for large scale engineering projects. Much admired by those he supervised, John was especially fond of mentoring many of the company's youngest and most talented engineers. Always an enthusiast of any mechanical system and device, John embraced every wave of technological advance during the last half of the 20th century, from transistors, computers and even wi-fi. He had a penchant for preserving many such devices around his home, much to the delight of his close friends and family. In 1987, John and Jean retired to Bellingham, Washington – a community they came to love. While there, John's interests in life became deeper and richer. He was known as an expert gardener, a woodworker, and a devoted and reliable neighbor who could be called upon to fix almost any household problem. A deeply compassionate husband, he cared for Jean with grace and courage during a lengthy period of declining health before her death in 2004. John developed a wide circle of friends through his many interests. He loved playing cribbage and duplicate bridge, and was a member of several formal and informal bridge clubs. His life long interest in golf continued to the time of his death, and although his eyesight eventually impaired his ability to see, he was able to continue to play with the help of friends who acted as spotters and guides. Those who were privileged to know John have universally described him as a humanitarian and philanthropist who touched the lives of many in our community. He was active in public and private charity work, and gave of his time and resources, donating to the private educational funds for a number of children in the area as well as larger institutions. John is survived by his daughter Susan, son David, two grandchildren, and many devoted and admiring friends.
