COSSEY, Edna A., age 60 years, of 1706 I Street, passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, Mar. 15, (1955) following a short illness. Mrs. Cossey had been a resident of this city for the past 52 years and was owner and operator of Cossey's Beauty Shop. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mabel Clifton of this city; two nieces, Mrs. Betty Swanson and Mrs. Mildred Frost, both of Bellingham; eight nephews, George Stearns of this city; Francis E. Sterns of Cottage Grove, Ore., Leon A. sterns of McCook, Neb., Richard Stearns of Ellensburg, Lee Clifton of Bremerton, Everett and Cecil Clifton, both of Bellingham and Milton Clifton of Seattle. COUCHMAN, Charles L., age 80 formerly of Glacier, passed away in Bellingham Thursday, October 17, (1963) following an extended illness. Born in Garfield, Kansas on August 24, 1883. Mr. Couchman had been resident of Whatcom County since 1909. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Lee; 4 sons, Claude B. of Bellingham, Alva R., Glen B. and Earl E. Couchman all of Seattle; one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Bunds of San Bruno, California; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. COUCHMAN, Claude B., of Bellingham died Tuesday, July 20, 1993. He was 83. A private family graveside service will be held Friday at Greenacres Memorial Park with the Rev. Cynthia Bauleke officiating. Born March 14, 1910, in Sumas, Mr. Couchman was a lifelong resident of Whatcom County. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Bellingham; son Jerry Couchman of Grand Prairie, Texas; stepdaughter Barbara Green of Bellingham; sister Bertha Bonds of San Bruno, Calif; and three grandchildren. COUCHMAN, Maxine, age 51 of 321 N. Forest St. passed away at home Sunday, August 16, (1964). Mrs. Couchman was a lifetime resident of this community and she attended school at Glacier, Maple Falls, and Western Washington College of Education. Surviving are 1 daughter, Glenda McLachlin of this city; 3 grandchildren, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Moore, city, 3 aunts, Mrs. Elsie Barratt of Mt. COUCHMAN, Myrtle L., age 77 of 525 W. Illinois St. passed away at her home, Friday November 1, (1963) following an extended illness. She had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1909 and had previously made her home in the Sumas and Glacier areas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles on October 17. Surviving are 4 sons, Claude of Bellingham, Alva, Earl and Glenn all of Seattle, 1 daughter, Mrs. Bertha M. Bonds of San Bruno, Calif., a brother, Fred Campbell and a sister, Mrs. Helen Hopkins both of Seattle, also 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas, Monday November 4 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Donald Lamka officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumas Cemetery.

COULL, Charles A. - Cabinet maker Charles A. Coull, 68, of 1601 Donovan Ave., died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital South Campus of a heart attack. Born on Oct. 30, 1921, in Spokane, he had lived in Bellingham since 1952. Mr. Coull operated Chuck's Custom Cabinets. He earlier worked for Darigold and McEvoy Oil Co. of Bellingham. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Alaska. Mr. Coull married Joanne Simonsen on Dec. 7, 1947, in Bellingham. She survives him. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Bellingham. He enjoyed salt-water fishing. Other survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Oltman, Colleen and Julie Coull, all of Bellingham; two grandsons; and a sister, Mary Tinney of Ketchikan, Alaska. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Westford Funeral Home with intern pastor Karen Edwards of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Bayview Cemetery.
COULTHURST, Danny Bruce, chief engineer for radio station KGMI in Bellingham, died Monday (Feb. 10, 1986) at St. Luke's General Hospital. Mr. Coulthurst, 56, worked from KGMI Inc. for the past 25 years. Previously, he worked for International Good Music. He played an integral role in the development and production of much of the automated equipment used by radio stations, according to KGMI. He designed the building and installed all equipment at the KGMI-KISM broadcast studio. "He was not only our past, but he envisioned our future." said Ann Jones, owner of KGMI. "There was no detail that escaped his attention." Haines Fay, sports announcer for KGMI, said, "He was just a marvelous person and an engineering genius. He was one of the most gifted and professionally accomplished people I've worked with in 38 years in radio. KGMI General Manager, Bill Day said, "This is not only a big loss to us as a close friend but to the radio business." Mr. Coulthurst was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Bellingham. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Marcia F. Coulthurst; five sons, Rick, Michael, Kenneth, Robert and Christopher, all of Bellingham; one daughter, Mary Coulthurst of Bellingham; two grandchildren, Ashley and Tiffany of Bellingham; his mother, Helen M. Coulthurst of Bellingham; and a brother, John D. Coulthurst of Bellingham. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. John E. Langlitz officiating. Burial will be in Bayview Cemetery.

COULTHURST, Mary Rose, age 84, passed away at the family home 427 N. Forest St. Saturday, July 14, (1951). Mrs. Coulthurst had resided in this community for the past 45 years and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Ladies Auxiliary of that church. Surviving relatives are her husband, John A. at home; two sons, A. Leon of Seattle and Bruce E. of Bellingham; two grandsons, Danny B. of the U. S. Navy and John D. of Bellingham. The remains rest at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where private services will be conducted by Canon E. B. Smith Friday, July 20, at 3 p.m. Cremation.
COUNTRYMAN, B. Ella, age 85, of 2130 Utter Street, passed away in a local hospital, Monday, May 19, (1952). Mrs. Countryman had resided in Bellingham since 1892 and was a member of the First Congregational Church and of the Plymouth Circle of the church. She was also a member of the Aftermath Club. Surviving relatives include the husband, Lincoln C. Countryman at the home; one son, Charles M. Countryman, of Bellingham; one daughter, Miss Linda Countryman, of Bellingham; and two grandchildren, Miss Sidne and Keith Countryman, both of this city. Private graveside services will be conducted at Bay View Cemetery by the Rev. W. Carl Calhoun, Wednesday, May 21, at 9 a.m. under the direction of Harlow-Hollingsworth. COUNTRYMAN, Charles M., 80, of Lacey, formerly a longtime resident of this area, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 1981) in Olympia. He was born March 21, 1900, in Bellingham to Whatcom County pioneers Lincoln and Ella Countryman. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1918, and attended Oregon State University for two years. He was a World War I Navy veteran. He moved to Hawaii in 1929 and to Vancouver, B. C., in 1941. He then returned to Bellingham, where he owned and operated Bellingham Transportation Company, a ferry service to the San Juan Islands, from 1945 to 1954. He later worked in Bellingham shipyards and also built minesweepers. In 1959, he became a real estate broker at Ellis Massey, where he retired in 1975. He moved to Lacey in 1977. He is survived by his wife, Marie, a son, a daughter, a sister, and four grandchildren. Private family services were held today in Lacey. Arrangements were made by Selene Mortuary, Olympia.
COUNTRYMAN, Lincoln Curtain, age 88, passed away at the family home, 2130 Utter St., Thursday, Jan. 7, (1954). Mr. Countryman had resided in this community for the past 65 years and was a retired merchant. Deceased was the oldest member of the Congregational Church, and was a former member of the Bellingham Rotary Club. Surviving relatives are one daughter, Miss Linda Countryman, at home; one son, Charles M., of Bellingham; two grandchildren, Miss Sidne Countryman, attending W. S. C. at Pullman, and Keith Countryman of Bellingham. Private graveside services were conducted by the Rev. W. Car. Calhoun Friday, Jan. 8, at Bay View Cemetery, followed by public memorial services at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church.
COUNTRYMAN, Linda, 89, former chairman of Western Washington University's home economics department, died Thursday (March 29, 1984) in Lacey. She was born at home in Bellingham in 1894. Her father, Lincoln Countryman, was a local pioneer who established the Racket dry goods store in the 1890s. She graduated from Milwaukee Downer College and got her master's degree from Columbia University. She taught at Western Washington University from 1921 to 1959 and was professor emeritus following her retirement. She was active in the Bellingham Congregational Church before moving to Lacey in 1971. She is survived by a nephew, a niece and a sister-in-law.

She had been a Ferndale resident for the last 38 years; was a member of the Orchard Grange for 35 years, & the American Legion Auxiliary. COUNTRYMAN, Mabel Elnoa, age 96, 6251 Vista Dr., Ferndale, WA passed away Sat. Oct. 12, 1991 at home. Born May 14, 1895 in St. Paul, NE, to Warren & Hellen Lilly. Moved to Ferndale in 1978 from Methow. She married Henry R. Countryman in 1914 in Olympia, WA and he preceded her in death in 1973. She was a member of the Orchard Grange of Ferndale. Survivors: Daughter Lilly Linn and son Ralph W. Countryman of Ferndale, 5 grandchildren, 10 gt. g.c. and 2 gt. gt. grandchildren. A sister Edith Castleman of Port Orchard, WA. COUNTRYMAN, Marie, of Lacey, who with her husband operated the Osage, a motor vessel that served the San Juan Islands, died Wednesday (May 29, 1985) in Lacey. She was 82. Born in Oakland, Neb., she spent her childhood years in Tacoma, graduating from high school there. She was affiliated with Delta Zeta Sorority while a student at the University of Washington. She married Charles M. Countryman in 1929, and they lived in Hawaii for 10 years before coming to Bellingham. They owned and operated the M/V Osage, a 59-foot vessel that carried freight, passengers and mail from Bellingham through the San Juans until 1953, when they lost the mail contract. Later, they were real estate brokers with Ellis Massey Realtor in Bellingham. They moved to Panorama City in Lacey about 10 years ago. Her husband died in 1980. Survivors include a daughter, a son and four grandchildren. A private memorial service was held Friday at her daughter's home in Kent.
COUNTRYMAN, Robin W. - A memorial gathering for Robin W. Countryman of Ferndale will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church. He died at home Wednesday, April 16, 1997. He was 52. Born March 21, 1945, to Ralph and Lucille Countryman in Methow, he lived in Whatcom County most of his life. A 1964 graduate of Ferndale High School, Mr. Countryman served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971. He was a fire fighter for the city of Houston for 11 years and moved back to Ferndale in 1982. He worked for Harry Smith Gardens in Bellingham for five years. He married Donna Mann on Dec. 26, 1996, in Bellingham. Survivors include his wife of Ferndale, his father of Ferndale, sisters Mildred Bushore of Lynden and Dixie Alm of Birch Bay, brothers Arthur Countryman of Tacoma and Daryl Countryman of Bellingham and numerous other relatives. Arrangements are by Whatcom Cremation Association.
COURCHANE, Melba - Funeral services for Mrs. Melba Courchane, 38, 1724 Bayon Rd. were conducted by the Rev. Richard Beddoe at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moles Funeral Home, Ferndale. A resident of Whatcom County for the past eight years, Mrs. Courchane died August 12, (1972). She is survived by five sons, Richard in the Army, and Steve, David, Joseph and Dale at home; her mother, Mrs. Maude Shell of Wenatchee, and a brother, John Shell of East Wenatchee. COURTIER, Edith Isabelle died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, in Federal Way. She was 83. Born March 23, 1914, in Centralia to Harry C. and Eva R. Brower Foster, she lived and worked in the Bellingham area most of her life. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Pithian Sisters and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting and tole painting. Survivors include sons David Allen of Granite Falls and Rodney Carsner of Mondovi, Wisc.; daughters Patricia Blackwell of Federal Way, Gwen Kerr of Shawnee, Kan., and Judith Brearty of Elma; sister Mona Noller of San Diego; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. COURTNEY, C. Wright "Bill" - A native of the Lynden area, C. Wright Courtney, 77, passed away August 19, (1980) at Sonora, Calif. He was born October 19, 1902 at the Courtney family home on the Wiser Lake Road. He attended Greenwood School and Lynden High School. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; and daughter Dorothy Lee Remington; and one granddaughter; two brothers, Marvin, Wiser Lake Road, Lynden, and Clay Courtney, Union City, Calif.; one sister, Ethel Urfer, Everson; and several nieces and nephews. Interment was a Jamestown, Calif.

Mr. Courtney had resided in this community for the past 31 years and for many years had been employed at the Pacific American Fisheries as a warehouseman. COURTNEY, Harriet Toby, age 88 of 1111 12th St., passed away Tuesday, March 18, (1975). Born June 24, 1886 on Lummi Indian Reservation, Mrs. Courtney was a full blood Indian and the oldest member of the Lummi Tribe. She had resided in Whatcom County her entire lifetime and spent the remaining 51 years in South Bellingham. Survivors include 1 daughter, Mrs. Irene Jameson of Bellingham; 2 sons, Charles Toby of Marietta and William Toby of Seattle; 6 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Vigil prayer services will be conducted Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Funeral Home. COURTNEY, James William (Bill) passed away on July 22, 2003. He was born on Dec. 15, 1943. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Cheryl Courtney; children Joshua Courtney, Jody Cloud and Josey Courtney; grandchildren Courtney, Jennifer and Jessica Cloud, Kyle Courtney and Nicole Courtney; aunt Alice Smith; siblings George (Bob) Courtney (Sandra), Patrick Courtney, Kathleen Ripley (Leland), Michael Courtney (Christine); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his sons, Jacob Courtney (1976) and Jeffrey Courtney (1976); his parents, Roy and Jean Courtney; and his brother, Timothy Courtney. He was a 1963 graduate of Mount Baker High School. During his life, Bill worked as a dairy farmer, fisherman, logger, business owner, marine and aerospace machinist. He retired from Boeing in October 2002. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at 3 p.m. with reception immediately following at Lake Connor Park Meeting Hall, 14320 28th N.E. Lake Stevens.
COURTNEY, Lula - Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Courtney, age 80, who died suddenly at her home on Sunday, August 4, (1985) will be conducted on Thursday, August 8, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Gillies Funeral Home, with Rev. John Bajema officiating. Burial will follow in Lynden Cemetery. Mrs. Courtney, of 628 E. Wiser Lake Rd., Lynden, was born on July 28, 1905, in Sioux Center, Iowa, and moved to Whatcom County from Oak Harbor in 1921. She was a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle and had been active in the Lynden Senior Activity Center. She was married to her husband, Marvin, in Bellingham on April 16, 1925. She is survived by her husband, Marvin; three sons, Foster and wife Ellen of Lynden, Leslie and wife Betty of Oxnard, Calif. and Alvin and wife Jackie of Renton; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice and husband Jack Fish of Bellingham; six grandsons, four granddaughters; a great-grandson and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by a brother, Rekius Duim of Lynden; three sisters, Mrs. Jacoba Ketel, Mrs. Johanna Orange and Mrs. Ella and husband Ralph Holleman, all of Lynden; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosie Duim of Sunnyside and Mrs. Alice Duim of Sequim; a brother-in-law, Mr. Henry Dykstra of Lynden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
COURTNEY, Leslie Marvin, born July 5, 1929, in Lynden and a graduate of Lynden High School, passed away on Feb. 26, 1990, in Ventura, Calif., where he had lived for about 40 years. He was 60. A memorial service was conducted on March 2, 1990 in the Ted Mayr Loma Vista Chapel of Ventura. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Brian; a daughter, Sandra; his father, Marvin Dean Courtney, of Lynden; two brothers, Foster Courtney and family, of Lynden, and Alvin Courtney, of Renton; and other relatives.
COURTNEY, Marvin D., age 99, of 628 E. Wiser Lake Road, Lynden, died in a Bellingham nursing home on Dec. 30, 1992. Funeral services were conducted on Monday in the chapel of Gillies Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lynden Cemetery. Born in Imboden, Ark. on Oct. 24, 1893, Marvin was the son of John and Cora (Dean) Courtney and moved with his family at the age of 6. The family homesteaded on the Wiser Lake Road, where Marvin resided until recently. He graduated from Meridian High School and Bellingham Normal School. During World War I he served in the Army. On April 16, 1925 he was married to Lula Duim in Bellingham; she passed away in 1985. From 1930 to 1963 Mr. Courtney was a mail carrier for the U. S. Post Office and was a member of the United Postal Workers Union. He was also active at the Lynden Senior Center and enjoyed playing pinochle. He is survived by two sons, Foster Courtney and wife Ellen of Lynden and Alvin Courtney and wife Jackie of Renton; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. COUSENS, Pearl Smith - Memorial services for Pearl Smith Cousens, 87, 141 E. Laurel Rd., will be at 1 P.M. Wednesday at Garden Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William G. Berney officiating. Mrs. Cousens died Sunday, May 26, 1991, at her home. She was born Pearl Smith to Harland Chester and Mary Etta Smith on Jan. 20, 1904, in Derring, N. H. She had been a resident of Whatcom County the past five years. Prior to that, she lived in Newton, Mass., and Waltham, Mass. She was a member of the Maple Leaf Chapter No. 58, Order of Eastern Star, and a former member of the Palestine Chapter, O.E.S. in Newton, where she was past matron. She also belonged to Deborah Rebeckah Lodge in Waltham, where she was past noble grand. She held statewide offices in both organizations. She was a member of Garden Street United Methodist Church, and also of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Waltham. Her husband, Frank Howard Cousens, died in March 1975. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Frymire of Bellingham. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Newton, Mass.
COUSINS, Charles "Chuck" LeRoy passed away peacefully on May 18, 2005, five days after his 41st wedding anniversary, with his loving family by his side. He was born October 27, 1946 in Portland, OR to Ralph and Gertrude Cousins. Church is survived by his wife Carol, one son, Randall; daughter, Cherri; three brothers, two sisters, five grandchildren and his mother. COVALT, James Perry "Jack" age 80, of 1513 E. Street, passed away at his home Monday, June 12, (1950) following a five-month illness. COVENTRY, Bruce - Memorial services are pending for Bruce Coventry, 33, formerly of Sumas, who was lost and presumed drowned in Alaskan waters near Cordova (Aug. 26, 1984). The Alaska State Patrol informed his family Monday that he had been working on a crab boat and was ready to come home, but hired on for an extra week's work with a native gillnetter out of Cordova. A freak wave apparently swamped the boat, washing Coventry and another crew member overboard. The second man floated for 45 minutes before being rescued, but Coventry was not found, according to his mother-in-law Mary Johnson of Bellingham. He is survived by his wife Katherine, of Clinton; his mother Hazel, of Anacortes, and two sisters.

COVINGTON, Edith, age 70, of 910 Garden Street, passed away in a local hospital Thursday, March 6, (1947). COWARD, Jeanne G. Tangney, died peacefully on Friday, June 5, (1992) after a nine year struggle against cancer. She was 67. She lived in Ferndale where she raised 4 children. She was born in Seattle in August of 1924. She attended High School there at Holy Angels Academy with the class of 1942. In the following years she taught English and Math at Seattle University, Good Shepards Home in Seattle, and at Western Wash. State College. After marrying Dick Coward in 1951 she moved to Petersburg, Alaska, and then to Ferndale in 1958. Jeanne especially loved children. From 1963 to 1975 she taught religion classes for the children of the Ferndale catholic community. She also worked in the nursery at the Ferndale United Church. She operated a pre-school in her home from 1975-1977. She tutored students in reading at Carl Cozier School in Bellingham and did classroom volunteer work at Mountain View school in Ferndale. Many children in Whatcom County have benefited from her unique perspectives and sensitivities. From 1977 to 1988 she worked at Whatcom Community College in the admissions office. She greatly enjoyed the personal contact she had with the students there. Her children are: Richard of Bellingham, Dan of Ferndale, and Judy and Mary of Seattle. She has two brothers: Tom of Seattle, Jack of Tacoma, and one sister, Dorothy (Hemmer) of Galata, Montana. Another brother, Bob, of Roche Harbor, died in 1972. Dick Coward died in 1989. She had three grandchildren: Perry, Peter and Matthew.

COWARD, Richard E., Sr., age 62 died Tuesday, Nov. 7,(1989) at his home in Bellingham. He was born Sept. 5, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to Percy & Mildred Coward. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he came to Bellingham where he earned a B.A. in Education from Western Washington State College. After marrying Jeanne Tangney in 1951, Dick resided with his family in Petersburg, AK where he was a school teacher. The family returned to Whatcom County in 1955 where Dick worked for 10 yrs. at the Mobile Oil Refinery. After receiving a Master's degree in Education, Dick became Director of Financial Aid at WWSC. In 1977 Dick moved to Camarillo, CA to accept a position as Director of Financial Aid at Moorpark College. Upon his retirement in June, 1988, Dick returned to Bellingham to be near his family. In recent years Dick had become an avid traveller, making numerous trips through the Cook Islands, Papau New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. He had most recently returned from Peace Corps service in Kenya. Dick is survived by his four children, Richard Jr. of Bellingham, Daniel & Mary of Seattle, and Judy Scott of Kirkland; 2 brothers, Jim of Kirkland, Tom of Las Vegas and Vesta Roy of Naples, FL; 2 grandchildren, Perry & Matthew.

She was a local resident for the past seven years. Mrs. Cowden married her first husband, Robert Shearer, in Boise. He died in March 1985. She married John Cowden on Nov. 23, 1985, in Bellingham. Survivors, in a addition to her husband, include three daughters, Stephanie Shearer of Bellingham, Jennifer Cowden of Mount Vernon and Kim Cowden Gregory of San Francisco; two sisters, Patti Ramey and Rosie Awong, both of Boise; her mother, Mary Love of Huntsville, Ala.; her grandmother, Grandma Verna Eberle of Boise; an aunt and uncle, Billy and Jim Eberle; and several nieces and nephews. COWDEN, Lena - A pioneer of Fairhaven's early days died Monday (Jan. 17, 1955) evening. Mrs. Lena Cowden passed away in a local hospital at the age of 85. She had been in ill health for some time. She came to Fairhaven as a young woman about 1886 when there were only paths for streets in the small frontier town, and with the exception of a short residence in the north end of the city had lived almost 69 years on the South Side. She was the widow of Walter J. Cowden. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. A. Julian Emerson, McKenzie Avenue, and Mrs. E. C. Holmes of San Francisco; three grandchild and one great-grandchild. Services are pending at the Harlow-Hollingsworth funeral home.
COWDEN, Patricia J., age 77, passed away in St. Joseph Hospital (July 1, 2005) after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Cowden; her five children, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister May Bayes and brother Ernie Roedell. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, July 9, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Northlake Community Church in Bellingham. Pat was a follower of Jesus Christ from her youth, serving God in many capacities in her former church, Rome Community Bible Church, and in recent years at Northlake Community Church. She will be remembered for her music ministry, gospel puppetry, Sunday School teaching, Vacation Bible Schools, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and person discipleship. Though born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Henry and Gladys Roedell, she spent almost all her life in Whatcom County. She graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1946 and married Kenny that year. Their children were all raised in their home at the end of North Shore Road by Lake Whatcom, or in the current family residence on Birch Street in Bellingham. She had an entrepreneurial spirit, working as an independent consultant for Avon Products. Later she was employed for many years by Gorney's, then Village Lighting, and with her husband established their own lighting business in Bellingham called "Shades'n More." Their business lasted eleven years until closing in 2001. Pat was the anchor for the family, was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be missed by all.
COWDEN, Pearl Eva, age 60 years, of Bellingham, Route 3, passed away at a local hospital Thursday, May 27, (1954) following a lingering illness. She had been a pioneer resident of the Sumas district. COWDEN, Stanley Paul, 67, Bothell, died Tuesday (Apr. 7, 1987) in Bothell. He was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Bellingham and lived in Whatcom County before Moving to Bothell two years ago. Mr. Cowden worked as a hotel manager and also at Cowden Gravel & Ready Mix, a company he founded. COWDEROY, Walter Vincent, age 64 years, a lifetime resident of Blaine, passed away suddenly at his home, Wednesday, Dec. 23, (1959). Mr. Cowderoy had been employed by the U. S. Postal Service since May of 1934 and at the time of his death was serving as postmaster at Blaine. He served in England during World War I with the Aviation Corps and was a charter member of the Peace Arch Post No. 86, American Legion, the Bellingham Eagles Lodge and the National Association of Postmasters. Surviving besides his wife Gladys is one brother, Edward V. Cowderoy of Seattle; a half-brother, William C. Quirt of Seattle; one sister, Mrs. Iola Lyle of Seattle and a half sister, Mrs. Floyd Borderud of Tacoma; also eight nieces. Funeral services will be held at the McKinney Funeral Home in Blaine, Saturday, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Evan David officiating. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park.
COWELL, Abbie, age 94, 249 S. Garden Street, passed away in the Lynden Christian Rest Home Friday, April 3, (1964). Mrs. Cowell was a fifty-six-year resident of this city, and was a member of the Christian Science Church. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Mogens Krabbe, city, and nieces and nephews. COWELL, Elza T., 93, 3164 Bay Road, died Sunday (July 28, 1985) in Bellingham. Mr. Cowell was born in Greenfield, Mo., March 31, 1892 - in a covered wagon, his daughter, Mildred Lange, said. After living in Alberta, he came to Whatcom County in 1919 with his parents, John and Lydia Cowell. They lived in Blaine. Mr. Cowell worked as a longshoreman and logger, and also helped build the highway between Lynden and Blaine. In 1940, he became a dairy farmer, and was a member of the Darigold organization. His wife, Agnes, whom he married in 1922, died in 1970. He had lived on Bay Road for more than 30 Years. COWELL, John F., age 87 years, beloved husband of Mrs. Lydia Cowell, 215 Samish Highway, passed away at a local hospital, Monday, March 4, (1946) following a lingering illness. Mr. Cowell had been a resident of Bellingham for the past twenty years and leaves to survive, besides the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Eva Cooper, Vermillion, Alberta, Mrs. Ava Ford, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Lizzie White, Samish Highway, Bellingham; three sons, Elza Cowell, Bellingham, Raymond, of Sedro-Woolley, and Bill, of Oklahoma; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. COWELL, Raymond "Puffy" age 85, former Whatcom County resident died in a Burlington Nursing home Sept. 3, (1983). Born in Oklahoma July 28, 1898, he was married to Ruby Quillen in Bellingham in 1925. The couple moved to Sedro Woolley in 1943. Mr. Cowell was a retired logger. Survivors include 1 daughter, Maxine Carlson of Ferndale; a brother, Elza Cowell of Custer; many grandchildren & great grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 7th at the Sedro Woolley Union Cemetery under the direction of the Lemley Chapel, Sedro Woollley.
COWELL, Ruby E., age 79, a Sedro Woolley resident for the past 35 years, died in Sedro Woolley, Sun., Oct. 16, (1977). Born Aug. 25, 1898 in Nebr. and had been a Whatcom Co. resident prior to moving to Sedro Woolley. She was united in marriage to Raymond Cowell in Bellingham in 1925. She is survived by her husband, Raymond; 1 daughter, Maxine M. Carlson of Bellingham; 3 brothers, Alvin Quillen of Bellingham, Cecil of Cottage Grove, Ore. and Wilbur of Colville, WA; 2 sisters, Gertrude Foster of Longview and Mabel Button of Everson; 12 grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wed., Oct. 19 at the Lemley Chapel in Sedro Woolley with interment in the Sedro Woolley Union Cemetery.

She and Mr. Cowen were married in Van Buren on June 8, 1928; Mr. Cowen died in 1984. She also was a member of the Ferndale Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Cowen is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Luella and husband Ed Powers of Lynden; three sons, Wendell and wife Oleta of Ferndale, Gayle and wife Sue of Sacramento, Calif. and Dennis and wife Arletta of Seattle; ten grand- and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Maberry and Mrs. Nina Coleman, both of Lynden; and numerous other relatives. COWEN, Elmo, age 83, of Lynden, died Friday, May 4, 1990, in Bellingham. He was born Oct. 22, 1906, in Van Buren, Missouri and moved to Lynden from Ft. Collins, Colo., in 1946. He married Bessie Dawson in Van Buren in 1928 and was preceded in death by his wife in 1980. Mr. Cowen was a strawberry farmer for a number of years and retired from the Great Western Lumber Company in Everson in 1972. He greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Lane and husband Carl of Lynden; a son, Terry Cowen of Lynden; two sisters, Ina Dawson of Lynden and Lillian Hawkins of Birch Tree, Mo.; two brothers Zimri Cowen of Mountain View, Mo., and Leo Cowen of West Plains, Mo.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Cowen, and a daughter, Lois Stenberg. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at Greenacres Funeral Home with pastors Roger D. Jones and William Elders officiating.

He was married to Audrey Galbraith in Van Buren on June 8, 1928. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; three sons, Wendell and wife Oleta of Ferndale, Gayle and wife Sue of Sacramento, Cal., and Dennis and wife Arletta of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Lue and husband Ed Powers of Lynden; ten grand- and seven great-grandchildren; five brothers, Ray and Leo of Birch Tree, Mo., Leonard of Sacramento, Elmo of Lynden and Zimri of Mt. View, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Ina Dawson of Lynden and Lillian Hawkins of Birch Tree, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews. COWGILL, Dorothy Jeannette, age 40, of Everett, passed away in a local hospital, Tuesday morning, April 12, (1949), following a lingering illness. Mrs. Cowgill had spent most of her life in Bellingham, making her home in Everett for the past six years. COWIN, Amos K., age 62, of 854 4th St., Blaine passed away suddenly Mon. Dec. 18, 1978. He had been a resident of Whatcom Co. since 1936 & was a heavy equipment operator for the Wilder Construction Co. for the past 38 yrs. He was a member of the Kulshan Lodge No. 186, F&AM having served as Past Master 2 times. Member of the Scottish Rite Bodies & was District Deputy to the Grand Master & a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 302. He had served with the U. S. Army during WWII. COWIN, Delton - Graveside services for Delton "Del" Cowin, age 63, of 7049 Tall Cedars Lane, Ferndale, were held at Greenacres Memorial Park Wednesday, Nov. 2 with Pastor Tom Randall officiating. Mr. Cowin passed away at home on Saturday, Oct. 29, (1983). He had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1935 and was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 194, Bellingham; the Delta Grange and the Sudden Valley Golf Club. He had worked for 25 years for the Ferndale School District Transportation Dept. and was a raspberry and strawberry grower for many years. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne and two sons, Wayne A. Cowin of Bellingham and Ronald L. and wife Sandy Cowin of Deming. There are six grandchildren; Leslie Cowin of Ferndale, Kevin Cowin in the U.S. Army, Ross Cowin of Cloverdale, Oregon; Stacy, Jenny and Timmy Cowin of Everson, one sister, Irene Stebens, of Lynden. COWIN, Ellis, age 81 of 2163 Seamount Drive, Ferndale, passed away Monday, January 4, 1982. Mr. Cowin had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1927; was a retired strawberry farmer and a member of the Old Time Fiddlers Association, who was known throughout the area for his fiddling. In his younger days he was known as a baseball player and trap shooter. She is survived by her husband, Shirley LeBeau and Ray and wife Joan LaBeau (sic) all of St. Louis; nineteen grandchildren; nice great-grandchildren; four brothers, Everett and Roy Bowen of Van Buren, Leonard Bowen of Wichita Falls, Texas and Emergy Bowen of St. Louis; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Davis of St. Louis. He was married to Isabel LaBeau in Bellingham on August 7, 1970; Mrs. Cowin died in 1981. He is survived by two step-sons, Jim and Ray LaBeau of St. Louis, Mo.; a step-daughter, Jane Stillman, also of St. Louis; a brother, Melvin Cowin and wife Marie of Lynden; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Nelson. also of Lynden, a step-brother, Ray Bales and wife Marie of Lynden; a sister-in-law, Willema Cowin, and a brother-in-law, Houston Headrick both of Lynden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

COWIN, Melvin, passed away at his residence on Thursday morning, August 31, 1989, at the age of 93. Graveside services were held at Lynden Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. with pastor Don Ross officiating. Mr. Cowin was born in Van Buren, Mo., on July 24, 1896, a son of Daniel and Viola Cowin. He came to Whatcom County in 1923 where he met and married his wife, Marie Von Euw, in Bellingham on Oct. 21, 1937. He was a field crop farmer, raising strawberries on the Loomis Trail Road for many years. During World War I he served in the U. S. Army. He attended Word of Life Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and skeet shooting. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of the family home; two sons, Randy and wife Tanis of Lynden and Douglas and wife Suzanne of Bellingham; a daughter, Beverly Beck and husband Jim of Lynden; a step-brother, Ray Bales of Lynden; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandsons and numerous other relatives. Arrangements were under the care of Gillies Funeral Home of Lynden.

COWLES, Viola M. - A graveside service was scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Greenacres Memorial Park for Viola M. Cowles, 77, of Bellingham. She died Friday, Oct. 16, 1992, at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center. Mrs. Cowles was born Jan. 24, 1915, to George and Lottie Edsel Bullis in Enid, Okla. She married Eri Cowles in Seattle on Aug. 1, 1935. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Cowles lived in Whatcom County for 43 years. She worked until her retirement as a salesperson at J. J. Newberry in Bellingham. Survivors include son Jim Cowles of Bellingham; daughters Darlene VanderYacht and Betty Boyd of Bellingham; sister Edith Warrick of Auburn; brother John Bullis of Auburn; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
COWLING, LeRoy O., age 57, passed away at the family home, 1024 Lakeway Drive, Tuesday, June 19, (1956). Mr. Cowling had resided in Bellingham for the past three months, and prior to that time had resided in Lynden for seven years and Everson for 12 years. COWLING, Margaret Faith White, age 73, of 1115 Puget St., Bellingham, died Tues., July 14, 1992 in Bellingham. Born in Leask, Saskatchewan, Canada on Apr. 24, 1919, she moved to Lynden, WA in 1926, where she lived until she joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1942. She earned the rank of Sgt. She married fellow Marine, David R. Cowling, in 1945 in San Diego, CA. They returned to Bellingham in 1964. She worked as a legal secretary and office manager at the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for 19 yrs. Since retiring, she had been actively involved in American Business Women's Assoc. Survivors include her husband, David R. Cowling of Bellingham; her only child, Jan Hilton and husband Charles of North Kingstown, RI and four grandchildren: David, Anne, Benjamin and Margaret Hilton of RI and many other relatives in Whatcom County. Mrs. Cox had been a lifetime resident of Bellingham and was a well known interior decorator. She was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, and was a Gray lady for the Red Cross. COX, Charles Henry, age 70, of 504 Lakeway Drive, passed away in a local hospital Friday, Sept. 23, (1949). Mr. Cox had resided in this community for the past 60 years; was a member of the Broadway United Presbyterian Church and had conducted a magazine agency for many years. Surviving relatives are six sons, Lee W. and Richard, both of Bellingham, Charles A. and Russell G. both of Seattle, Leonard R. of Yakima, and Glenn E. of Baltimore, Md; four daughters, Mrs. LeEtte Park and Mrs. Rhoda Lyle of Bellingham, Mrs. Letitia Wood of Clipper, and Mrs. Ruby Reid of Riverside, Calif.; twenty-three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Farley of Seattle, and numerous nieces and nephews. COX, Emma, 87, 3828 Idaho St., died Wednesday (June 17, 1987) in Bellingham. She was born Oct. 13, 1899, in Vergennes, Ill., and was a local resident for six years. Mrs. Cox was a homemaker. COX, Eva M. of 1712 E. Maplewood Ave. died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1994, at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center. She was 90. Born July 15, 1904, to George and Caroline Joos Bollinger in Marshall, Minn., she married John Cox on Sept. 3, 1957, in Goshen, Ind. COX, Helen Elaine, passed away Sunday, December 26, 1993 at her family home, 4915 Samish Way, Space #106, in Bellingham. Her loving family was by her beside at the time of her passing. Born to Oline and Olaus Syre, August 29, 1922, Helen, a loving wife, mother, grand and great-grandmother was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Hubert L. Cox, sister Agnes Maroe, brother Roy Syre and her mother and father. Helen was actively involved with her family and their lives. An avid golfer, she was a past member of the Riverside and Grandview Golf Clubs. Her passion for golf was shared with her husband and together they participated in various club competitions and enjoyed many club trophies. Her hobbies included bingo, baking traditional Norwegian foods, fishing, boating and enjoying the company of her wonderful friends. Helen mingled her 71 year residence in Bellingham with summers in Alaska during her early years when her father was a cannery superintendent for the old P.A.F. Company at their Excursion Inlet, Alaska Cannery, various duty stations around the country with her husband during WWII and Birch Bay. She is survived by a son Skip Cox and his wife Loretta of Nome, Alaska; daughter Barbara Wolf of Seattle; daughter Susan Hanson and her husband Steve of Everson; brother, Robert Syre and sister, Eleanor Dawson of Seattle; grandchildren, Tony, Yolanda, Katherine and Christopher Cox, Cim and Corbett Hanson, Oline Stehr and great-grandchildren Andrew, Cody and Steffan. A private family service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993 at the family home.
COX, Hubert Lawson, of 4915 Samish Way, Space 106, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1992 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 73. A private family memorial is scheduled at the family home on Sunday, Dec. 20. A resident of Bellingham for 50 years, Mr. Cox was born Feb. 20, 1919, in Plymouth, N. C., to Zula and William Cox. He married Helen Syre of Bellingham on Feb. 14, 1942, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Bellingham. Mr. Cox joined the U. S. Navy in 1936. He served aboard the U.S.S. Maryland during WWII and was present during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He received many medals during his military service. He retired from active duty in 1946 but was recalled to duty during the Korean War. Following the Korean War he was a Civil Service engineer at Blaine Air Force Station from 1952 until 1975. Mr. Cox was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing, and attending sports events his grandchildren participated in. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1585 and Elks Club 194. He served as a member and past president of the Lake Padden Senior Men's Golf Club. Survivors include his wife, Helen of the family home; daughters, Susan Hanson of Everson, Barbra Wolf of Seattle; son Skip Cox of Nome, Alaska; sisters, Peggy Roberts and Leah Rosenthal of Plymouth, N. C.; brother Brinson Cox of Greenboro, N. C.; grandchildren, Corbett Hanson, Cimberlee Hanson, Oline Wolf, Tony Cox, Londa Cox, Christopher Cox and Katherine Cox; three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

COX, Rose passed away on Monday, February 27, 2006, at the age of 94. She had been a resident of Fairhaven Estates Health Care for the past 1-1/2 years. Rose enjoyed sewing for family and friends. She also had a great love for her granddaughter Valorie Nunez of California, and her great-grandchildren. Rose will be laid to rest with her husband and family in LeMoore, California.

Y., she had been a Bellingham resident since 1983; was an active officer in Salvation Army for 45 years; ordained minister in the Salvation Army and was a Registered Nurse; edited "The Young Soldier", a publication of the Salvation Army, and traveled extensively, visiting 70 countries. Served as superintendent of three Salvation Army Homes and Hospitals within the Salvation Army's Women's Social Service Department. The homes and hospitals were located in Spokane, WA, Oakland, CA and Los Angeles, CA. She is survived by her close friends, Frank and Ruth Moss, of Bellingham. Memorial service Friday April 24, 2:00 p.m. at Salvation Army Citadel, 2912 Northwest Avenue, Bellingham. Service will be conducted by Major Richard Beaver. COX, Walter Allen, age 75, formerly a long time Whatcom County resident passed away at the Sun Mountain Ranch, Winthrop, Thursday, June 21, 1979. He was a retired railroad carpenter and long time farmer. He was an active member in the Senior Citizens Club, the AARP and Good Sam Club. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; one son, Ronald in St. Mary's, Idaho; two daughters, Margaret Snider of Castle Rock, WA and Marjorie Joyce Crump in Craig, Colorado; a sister, Marion Parsons of Lansing, Michigan; 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Veroske-Jerns Chapel, Monday June 25 with Rev. Lawrence Guderian officiating. Burial was in the Ten Mile Cemetery.
COYE, Clarence Milford, "Milt" 84, of Bellingham, died Friday July 4, 1997 at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born December 12, 1912 in Tacoma, Washington to Clarence M. and Pansy Elizabeth (Parker) Coye. Clarence taught 25 years beginning in 1951 for the Bellingham School District and retiring in 1976. He was well-known as the physics teacher at Bellingham High School. Leaving Tacoma at the age of 7, Clarence grew up in Glendale, California, graduating from Glendale Union High School in 1931 and Glendale Junior College in 1933. He moved to Whatcom County in 1933 and worked as a journeyman printer and linotype operator for the Ferndale Record, Blaine Journal, and Lynden Tribune. In 1937, Clarence contracted polio and for the rest of his life worked hard as a polio survivor to minimize his physical disabilities. In 1940, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the U.S.S. Detroit in Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941 attack and fortunately survived. Clarence served 6 years as a Chief Electronics Mate. He remained active in the Naval Reserves for many years. Clarence was married on August 28, 1941 to Marilyn Gillespie Taylor. After he w as discharged from the Navy, he returned to Whatcom County and worked for the Lynden Tribune and Bellingham Herald while attending Western Washington College of Education. He graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1951, and a M.A. in Education and Principals's Certification in 1954. Clarence had two passions: a love and respect for the sea having sailed for many years and holding a Coast Guard sail charter license; and an interest in electronics and amateur radio, which he shared often and fervently with students. His call sign was W7DVS. Clarence is survived by Marilyn, his beloved wife of 56 years and three sons and their families; Glen Coye and Mary Wondra of Lopez Island, Washington, and grandson Aaron Coye of San Juan Island, Washington; Ray Coye and Patricia Spencer of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and grandson Travis Spencer Coye of Bellingham, Washington; and Gary Coye and Julia Howard of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. At Clarence's request no services will be held.

Dr. Cozier had resided in this community for the past 50 years; was owner and operator of Cozier's Veterinary hospital, was Dean of Veterinary Surgeons in Whatcom County; served 14 years as secretary-treasurer for the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association; served as city milk inspector for many years, and was a member and Elder of the Broadway United Presbyterian church. Dr. Cozier was honored for his service to the local schools when Carl Cozier school was named and dedicated in his honor. Surviving relatives include his widow, Mrs. Emily H. COZZA, Anthony, age 51 years, passed away at the family home, 93 Lake Whatcom Boulevard, Saturday evening, February 24, (1945). Mr. Cozza, who was a former resident of Bellingham, had been here for about 1 1/2 years, and was a member of the Church of the Assumption. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the submarine service of the navy; a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, former member of the B.P.O. Elks, Bellingham No. 194, and of Seattle. Mr. Cozza went into the Customs service in Seattle at the age of 18 years; established the first patrol in Eastern Washington, and came here with the first patrol established in the Northest (sic) district. He was commanding officer of Co. "C" of the Northwest Patrol. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and one daughter, Barbara, of the home; one son, Stewart, of the U. S. Navy located at San Diego, California; two brothers, John P. Cozza of Tacoma, and Lewis C. Cozza, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; also many nephews and nieces. Rosary will be said Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Assumption. Requiem High Mass will be sung Wednesday morning, February 28, at 9:00 a.m. with the Rt. Rev. Mnsgr. J. G. Stafford, celebrant. Interment, Bay View, under the direction of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home.
