BILLINGS, Thomas Arthur Dr., 66, died quietly Saturday, May 27, (1995), on his farm in Everson. Severe illness was brief, his passing was willful but mild, and a resurrection was promised and is pending. Quixotic and charismatic, a brother and a sometime husband and a father and a friend, an extraordinary teach and celebrated bagelmeister, you just barely approach him in a few paragraphs. Dr. Billings was born February 12, 1929 in Leaburg, Oregon to Thomas Austin and Edith Helen Billings. He lived there until joining the U.S. Navy for 2 years, a service for which he was perhaps inordinately proud (the war was over). In 1952, he married Shirley Louise Bradway and with her, after earning a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Oregon, later moved to Sacramento, California to teach at Sacramento State College. A decorated, but controversial, 3 years followed before he was fired for his passionate involvement in civil rights activities. About a decade afterward, he was asked to consider a return as the college's president, an honor for which he was justly proud. He moved to Whatcom County in 1963. But for 2 years as the national director of the Upward Bound office in Washington, D.C., he remained here and taught at Western Washington University until his retirement in 1993. He married Jean Arlene Greenleaf in 1967 and settled on his Everson farm in 1971. Dr. Billings wasn't much of a joiner, but he once belonged to the knights of Columbus so that he could get one of their cool rings. Among his most cherished achievements are Outstanding Teacher of The Year awards from both Sacramento State College and WWU and a national Accolade Extraordinaire for his Upward Bound leadership. He also won countless blue ribbons at the Northwest Washington Fair, under his beloved pseudonym Chester P. Lampe, for his vegetables and his bagels, the latter of which were genuinely tasty. Robert Edgar Billings was his brother and most abiding friend. He still lives at their birthplace in Leaburg. A brilliant man, the simplest cause-and-effect relationships still sometimes eluded Dr. Billings. The 10 greatest and most enduring surprises of his life, by whom (with his brother) he was surrounded on his last days, were given these names: Bekke Louise, Thomas Anthony, David Bradway, Brian Edward, Carmel Marie, Terees Lee, Bernadette (we think the hummingbird that flew into the house was her spirit) Rachel Ruth, Jacob and the youngest Jennifer Emily. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren. Services will be private.

BIRDSEY, Lee - On June 14th, the beloved Matriarch and center of our family, Lee Birdsey, ended her 17-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and wonderful husband, she left the arms of her loving family to be embraced by her awaiting Savior. We all look forward to seeing her again face to face when each of us makes that journey. A uniquely strong and intelligent woman has left us with a deep sadness, but also with tremendous pride and thankfulness for having had her love, strength, and fighting spirit to show us the way. Lee was a remarkable person for the life she lived. Adopted herself, she adopted three to her already expansive family of 9 children. In addition to her 12 children, there were many that she adopted unofficially. Her children's friends were always welcome, and at times there were as many at 17 at the dinner table. Although she was born in the 1930's and came of age in the 1950's, she seemed timeless in the way she adapted to the changing culture. A voracious reader, she was highly articulate, and always ready to engage those around her in a thoughtful and challenging discussion. We will miss her wonderful meals, her witty sense of humor, her beautiful garden her friendship, and her presence with our family. How privileged we were to have you. Lee leaves behind her husband Jerry of 36 years; six sons James (Jean) Gray of Bellingham, Jeffery (Lori) Gray of Bellingham, Jerry Birdsey of Lynden, Delmar (Cindy) Birdsey of Lynden, Tyler (Kitt) Bennett of Florida, Rickie (Michelle) Birdsey of Seattle; six daughters, Leslie (Warren) Henley of Bellingham, Tracy (Lowell) Langford of Lynden, Kasey (Earl) Bower of Lynden, Robin (Dennis) Rhodes of Maple Falls, Bernice (Steve) Brim of Bellingham, Camron Elizabeth of Seattle; 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
