McKenney T. Tawes Family

McKenney Thomas TAWES was born 26 May 1824 in Somerset County, MD to McKenney and Nancy (NELSON) TAWES. He died 3 Apr 1897 in Ferndale, Whatcom, WA and is buried in Enterprise Cemetery. He married in San Francisco, CA in 1856 Mary Frances BIRD who was born 22 Nov 1839 in Dublin, Ireland. She died 11 Jan 1921 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA and is buried in Enterprise Cemetery. McKenney and Mary TAWES came to Whatcom County soon after their marriage and established their home at Sehome. In various census records his occupation was listed as farmer, boatman and engineer. Between 1871 and 1880 McKenney relocated his home to the 160 acres along the Nooksack river, a mile and a half south of Ferndale, that he had purchased 22 May 1862. Here he lived until his death. In the1900 census Mary TAWES is recorded as being the mother of 9 children, 4 living. Names of only 5 of the children can be found in census records.


Children:

  1. Elizabeth TAWES was born in October or November, 1859 and died before 1870.

  2. Annie Eva TAWES was probably born 1 Dec 1860 in Sehome, Whatcom, WA. She was not listed in 1860 census. She married William G. RAY, of Semiahmoo, 24 Dec 1878 at Ferndale, Whatcom, WA and died 24 Jan 1949 in Ferndale, Whatcom, WA. William G. RAY was born 3 Jun 1856 or 1857 and died 26 Mar 1924. Annie and William are buried in Enterprise Cemetery.


  3. Charles T. TAWES was born 4 Dec 1862 in Sehome, Whatcom, WA and died 11 Dec 1918. Charles married on November 26, 1889 Edith WHEELER, daughter of John D. and Forbina (HICKS) WHEELER.

  4. Emily TAWES was born 26 Mar 1867 in Sehome, Whatcom, WA and died 1 Nov 1960 in Ferndale, Whatcom, WA.  Emily married Albert MOHRMAN who died before 1900. Emily is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

  5. John Quincy TAWES was born 26 May 1870 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA. He married first on 25 Dec 1892 in Ferndale, Whatcom, WA Mattie V. CISSNA; they were divorced. His second wife was Ethel. John died 5 Jul 1929 in Ferndale, Whatcom, WA and is buried in Enterprise Cemetery.
