James W. Connella, editor of the Everett News, and OLE NELSON, a wood and coal dealer, met and in a quarrel which followed, Connella pulled his revolver and shot Nelson in the groin, the wound proving fatal. When the republican convention met in Everett last month, some one tore down the picture of Congressman Lewis, which had been left in the hall after the democratic convention. Connella commented on this harshly, and accused Ole Nelson of doing the deed, lashing Nelson in a personal manner. To this the latter took exception, and bad blood was conseqently engendered. On the night of the shooting, report says that when they met they began to quarrel and blows passed between them. Nelson knocked Connella down and while lying there he pulled his revolver and shot, the ball striking Nelson in the groin. Deputy Sheriff Dwyer was near by, and immediately took Connella in charge and to the jail. Nelson was taken up stairs in the Commercial Hotel, and afterwards to the hospital, where four physicians did everything possible to save his life but without avail, and at 12:30 he died. The deceased was generally known as a peacful and law abiding citizen, and the citizens of Everett greatly deplore the fatal affair. The coroner's inquest brought in a verdict that the deceased came to his death from a bullet fired from a pistol held in the hands of James Connella and fired by his hand with criminal intent. The preliminary examination held before Justice Banks resulted in Connella being held over for the superior court without bail. Snohomish County Death Records O.N.
