Nuelsen:  (Louis G Nuelsen) “Early Odessa Pioneer Died at Age of 93 in California.  Word from California indicates that L G Nuelsen, early Odessa pioneer, died at the age of 93 in California, of pneumonia. Mrs Nuelsen, 88, is recuperating at a Riverside, CA, hospital. She and Mr Nuelsen were both taken ill with the flu and removed to the hospital, and the death of her husband was kept from her because of her illness. The Nuelsen family came to Odessa early in its history, Mr Nuelsen and George Unsoeld buying the original Trantum & Schoonover store, which included the Postoffice, and Mr Nuelsen succeeded Mr Trantum as postmaster, thus becoming the town’s second postmaster. In this store the stock was mainly groceries, and with the completion of the Finney block, the two opened an expanded store in the new building, the location of the present Strate Furniture store. Mr Nuelsen invested heavily in Odessa, having a part in early banking, serving as president of the Farmers and Merchants bank here. As businessman and banker he was generous to early settlers, helping many survive the homestead days. Upon retiring, he and Mrs Nuelsen made their home in California. They have continued their interest in Odessa, regularly receiving the Odessa Record. While in Riverside on a vacation, Mr and Mrs Hy W Rieke of Cashmere, visited Mrs Nuelsen at the hospital, and on March 19 wrote the Odessa Record, telling of Mr Nuelsen’s death. Mrs Nuelsen, who had been informed of the death of her husband told Mr Rieke ‘Louis died in his sleep. He was good to everyone, especially to early Odessa farmers.’ She expected to return to her home at 7359 Indiana Ave, Riverside, CA, at that time.” (Odessa Record: March 1953; G Beck data card collection, also show that Mrs L G Nuelsen was nee Bertha Kyle, born IL.}

Parrish:  “Most people would be content to say they were a success in business, or an effective civic leader, or an avid outdoorsman, or a distinguished service veteran, or a consummate family man, or a person of (shall we say) ‘distinctive’ taste in fashion. Dr John ‘Jack’ Pershall Parrish could say he was all of the above, except he wouldn’t. His humble Eastern Washington-bred sense of modesty wouldn’t allow it.  Born May 20, 1924 to Mr and Mrs J R Parrish at Odessa, Washington. Jack moved to Deer Park, outside Spokane, for his teenage years. After high school he attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, and then enrolled in the University of Washington’s School of Dentistry, where he was a member of that school’s first graduating class in 1950. Shortly after graduating, he married Ann Brown, and they immediately went to work creating a family of six children which Jack presided over with uncommon wit, gentleness and an irresistible grin.  While in Pedodontic Graduate School at the University of Washington, he was called on to serve in the US Army during the Korean War. He practiced dentistry during his time in the service in Texas, Georgia, and France. He then returned to Seattle in 1953 and practiced there until September of 1956. Now, with four of those eventual six children in tow, the family moved to the house on West Pioneer Avenue in Puyallup he would call home for the rest of his life. Jack took to his new town and Puyallup certainly took to him. He served on Puyallup’s YMCA Board; Board of Adjustments; Planning Commission; School Board; City Council; and was elected Mayor of Puyallup in 1992. He was also a member of the Puyallup Rotary Club and the Summer Sportsmen’s Club, and was Chairman of a Special Levy Campaign for Puyallup Schools. His professional credits also include membership in the Seattle Endodontic Study Club and a charter membership of the Seattle Pedodontic Society. When he wasn’t serving his community, Jack was often seen serving his opponent on the courts of the Puyallup Tennis Club. He also loved to hunt, fish, play golf, and drag his family on hikes and nature walks whenever Mt Rainier beckoned which was often.  Jack’s most remarkable life came to a peaceful end on Tuesday, Nov 25 in the big white house on Pioneer. His absence will leave a gaping hole in the lives of his best friend, companion, and love, wife Ann, as well as his beloved children: Robert (Patty) of Walla Walla; Susan (Dan) of Puyallup; James (Sue) of Walla Walla; Patti of Seattle, Janie (Don) of Woodinville; and David (Sue) of Palmdale, CA. Others whose lives will never be quite the same include Jack’s brother, James (Jane) of Winthrop, WA, his 10 grandchildren, and countless colleagues, neighbors, and dear friends. A Celebration of Jack’s life will take place on Saturday, Nov 29, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Puyallup. Arrangements entrusted with Powers Funeral Home.”  (Seattle Times: 11-27-2003)
