James C. Bertrand Family


James Curtis BERTRAND was born 02 Sep 1829 in Exeter, Scott, IL and died 13 Feb 1933 in Blaine, Whatcom, WA at age 103. He married Mary Ann ___ about 3 Nov 1859 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Mary Ann was born in April, 1842, in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada and the daughter of Robert, a full blooded Nooksack Indian and his wife Christine who was half Nooksack and half Skagit Indian. Mary Ann BERTRAND died 23 Nov 1918 at age 76 of influenza in Blaine, Whatcom, WA. James BERTRAND came to California in 1850 by ox team across the plains, a trip which required four months and sixteen days to make.  He made a second overland trip in 1851. Leaving Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras, California in 1857, he came to Semiahmoo in 1858, and in March, 1859, was engaged with the government's expedition to set large iron monuments along the boundary line between British Columbia and the United States, which had long been in dispute between the two countries. He was engaged in a variety of business activities in the Blaine area over the years, many of which are noted in the issues of The Blaine Journal elsewhere on this website.

  1. William BERTRAND was born 29 Jan 1861 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. He died  19 Jan 1930 and was buried 21 Jan 1930 in Blaine Cemetery. He married 12 Mar 1910 Essie REED who was born 12 Apr 1884 and died 22 May 1953. They are both buried in Blaine Cemetery.

  2. Charles BERTRANDwas born in March, 1863 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. He married 4 Jun 1888 Lucy WARD in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Lucy was born 5 Dec 1867 in Lower Sumas, British Columbia, Canada. Lucy A. Ward BERTRAND died 21 Mar 1920 and is buried in Lynden Cemetery. Charles died 10 Nov 1934 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. He is not listed among Lynden Cemetery burials and is not listed in the B. C. Archives cemetery burials.

  3. Samuel BERTRAND was born 22 Aug 1865 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. He died 16 Apr 1888 of typhoid fever in Blaine, Whatcom, WA. He is buried in the Blaine Cemetery.

  4. Anna L. BERTRAND was born in June, 1868 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. She married (1) 29 Sep 1887 in Blaine, Whatcom, WA,  Elmer MISSIMER/MESMER/MESSIMER, the telegraph operator, who died 5 May 1891 in Blaine. She married (2) 10 Aug 1892 in Blaine, Whatcom, WA, Albert Hugh GLEN, who was born 9 Jun 1865 or 1866 in Minneapolis, Hennipen, Minnesota. He died 19 June 1936 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

  5. Henry David BERTRAND was born 27 Nov 1870. He was buried 25 Mar 1940 in Blaine Cemetery.

  6. Josephine BERTRAND was born 4 Apr 1876. She married 26 Sep 1893 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Frank A. ADAMS who was born 15 Aug 1873 at Ft. Clark Springs, TX. Frank and Josephine Adams were buried  in Blaine Cemetery; Frank on 26 Oct 1951 and Josephine on 17 Mar 1952.

  7. Thomas BERTRANDwas born 17 Jan 1879 and died 18 Nov 1918 of influenza in Blaine, Whatcom, WA.

  8. Sarah J. BERTRAND was born in May, 1881 at Delta, Whatcom, WA. She married 23 Feb 1904 at Bellingham, Whatcom, WA, Arthur B. MARSHALL who was born in Minnesota to Charles A. and Annie (NORRIS) MARSHALL. Living in Anacortes, WA in 1928.

  9. James BERTRAND was born in May, 1884. 1920 census shows wife, Flora, and daughters, Evelyn and Cleo. Living in Bellingham in 1928.
