Henry A. Smith Family

Henry Albert SMITH was born 6 Mar 1847 in NY to Hamilton and Elizabeth (CONCKLYN) SMITH. He died 16 Dec 1908 in Ferndale,Whatcom, WA. In 1868 he was married by the Rev. Horatio FOOTE in Quincy, Adams, IL to Alice McCOMB, daughter of Robert and Ann Eliza (CRANE) McCOMB, in Quincy, Adams, IL. Alice was born 11 Jun 1848 in Quincy, Adams, IL and died 9 Mar1909 in Whatcom County. Henry and Alice were both buried in Mt. View Cemetery. The family arrived in Whatcom Co., WA in 1873 from Quincy, Adams, IL. Alice's brother, Charles McCOMB, had arrived in Whatcom County much earlier and had encouraged the Smiths to leave Illinois and move to Washington Territory. Henry first took a claim in the Semiahmoo section of the county but soon took the adjoining claim to his brother-in-law Charles McCOMB. Henry moved his family by boat, going by way of The Portage, Lummi Bay, Red River and McComb's Slough. He and Charles named the area Mountain View. Alice missed having a piano and in 1877, a piano was brought in by canoe and sled. She was an accomplished pianist and entertained family and friends for many years. Henry aided in the work of building the first church and schoolhouse in Mt. View Township. He served on the school board, was a deputy assessor and one of the first commissioners of the county in 1877 and 1878. In 1880 he donated land for the Mountain View Cemetery.  The Henry Smith family members are mentioned many times in the Blaine Journal extractions elsewhere on this website.
