BELLINGHAM BAY EPISCOPAL CHURCH RECORDS

BURIALS, 1891 - 1898

The following burial records were extracted by WGS Member, Bob Witherspoon, from the original record book at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2117 Walnut Street, Bellingham, Washington, with the permission of the Rev. John W. Gibbs, Rector of St. Paul's, and the help of Cherie Little, St. Paul's Church Secretary.

There are strong indications, however, that this set of records actually pertains to St. James' Episcopal Church, Fairhaven, Washington, before it ceased operation before the turn of the century. All but one record shows residence as Fairhaven, and only the later burials were officiated by Mark JUKES, Rector of St. Paul's Church, Bellingham. Data extracted from the "Burial" record sheets include day/date of burial; name, age and residence of the deceased; date and cause of death; place of burial; and signature of clergyman. Comments or notes by the copier are enclosed brackets [ ].

The "Burials" record sheets include the name of deceased, place of birth, date of birth (or age), nature of death, place of burial service, place of interment and notes (usually signature of clergyman). These records were compared, wherever possible, with newspaper accounts (Daily Reveille/Bellingham Reveille/Morning Reveille-Evening American); Cemetery Records of Whatcom County (as published by WGS); Washington State Death Records Index, beginning in mid-1907; and records in the Washington State Archives Northwest Regional Branch at Western Washington University: Register of Deaths, Book A, City of Fairhaven/New Whatcom (1895-1904); Register of Deaths, Whatcom County (1891-1907); a book of individual certificates and returns of death; and record of stubs of burial permits (1890-1904). Conflicting or additional information and notes by compiler are shown in brackets [ ]. Parenthetical information shown in the original records are shown in parentheses ( ). The sequence of information from the original records has been adjusted to simplify publication. Unless noted otherwise, interment was at Bay View [Lake View] Cemetery in Whatcom [Bellingham].
