Wahkiakum Eagle-November 1999 YOUNG, Wilfred Albert 'Bill' Age 89, a Rosburg resident, died in Ilwaco. He was born in Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada, the soon of Albert and Florine (Clarke) Young. At an early age the family moved to Juneau and later Hoonah, Alaska, where he grew up and graduated from high school. He served a stint in the US Army during the Depression years and then returned to the Juneau area where he worked in gold mines, on tugboats and learned to fly airplanes. During WWII he was a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps, serving in the European Theatre. Following the war he located in Fort Bragg, California where he operated a flying school and air charter service. He also flew commercially for non-scheduled airlines, flying freight principally on the west coast until the mid 1950s. He then built a salmon troller and returned to Alaska where he fished until the mid 1970s. Finally retiring, he lived six years in Florida before moving to Rosburg 16 years ago to be near family. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and was a 32 degree Mason in the Juneau Masonic lodge. He was a proud member of the OX-5 Club, an organization of aviation pioneers. He maintained a life-long love of aviation, whether memories of the early days or current space endeavors. He was well-read on many topics and possessed a keen mind for mathematics, astronomy and other sciences. He also enjoyed deer hunting and caring for animals, especially his dog Warhoop. He and Wanda Smythe were married November 11, 1935 in Juneau. She died in 1993. Survivors include his son, Kirby and wife Betty Young of Naselle; daughter, Karen and husband Gary Rice of Tacoma; foster-daughter Nina and husband Warren Westerberg of Vancouver; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
