Wahkiakum Eagle-January 1997 WOOD, Charles 'Fred' Age 68, former local resident, died of cancer at home. He was born in Bremerton, to Irving and Marion Wood. In 1930 the family moved to Puget Island, where he grew up and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1947. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he returned to the Cathlamet area. On January 18, 1955, he and Betty Fornshell were married in Carrington, N. D. They moved from Cathlamet to Longview in 1962. He was employed by Weyerhaeuser Co. until 1979 and then by the Cowlitz County Road Department until his retirement in 1993, when the Woods moved to Grapeview, northeast of Shelton. While in the Longview and Cathlamet areas, he was active in the Boy Scouts, the Cathlamet Fire Department, Cowlitz Fire District 2 and the Longview United Methodist church. He was past master of Pentalpha Lodge No. 276 and past patron of the Longview Order of Eastern Star Chapter 206. Other memberships included the Shelton United Methodist church, Longview Masonic Lodge No. 263, Mapel Chapter 218 Order of Eastern Star, Longview American Legion Post 155, and the Tramper Sams RV Club of Shelton. He loved to work, help others and tell stories of his past experiences with friends and family. Survivors are his wife, Betty, at home; two daughters, Gayle Fletcher of Gig Harbor, and Janelle Knutson of Vancouver; a son, Bruce Wood of Portland; five grand- children; and several other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place in Seattle. A memorial service was held Saturday in Longview.
