12 The Wahkiakum County Eagle-Thursday, December 5, 2002 VIOLA WIRKKALA Viola Johanna Wirkkala, 85, a lifelong resident of Deep River, died December 2, 2002, in Cathlamet. The daughter of Finnish immigrants Kalle and Josephine (Bjork) Koski, she was born May 10, 1917, at the family farm in Deep River. She attended Deep River schools and was a 1935 graduate of Naselle High School. She and William Wirkkala were married at her residence on March 5, 1941, and this union was to last until his death in July of 1994. She was a longtime member of the Naselle Congregational Church where she served as treasurer, sang in the choir and was active in the Martha Circle and the Rag Gang which made rag rugs. She was a homemaker who enjoyed photography, scrapbooking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, letter writing, walking and traveling. She also enjoyed animals. She was proud of her Deep River roots and her family will remember her as a wonderful mother and grandmother. Survivors include a son John Wirkkala of Naselle; daughter Annette Bosler of Portland; grandchildren, John, Kevin, Traci and Karla; and four great grandchildren. Funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 5, 1:00 p.m. at Naselle Congregational Church. Graveside service follows at Deep River Cemetery with a reception at the church. Viewing will be Thursday morning, 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the church. Memorials may be made to either the Naselle Congregation church or the Deep River Cemetery association in care of Penttila’s Chapel by the Sea, P.O. Box 417, Long Beach, WA 98631.
