Wahkiakum Eagle-December 1997 WIRKKALA, Arthur Raymond Age 77, died at his Naselle residence. He was born in Astoria, the son of John Alexander and Hilma Sophia Hanson Wirkkala. In the early 1930s he moved with his family to Rosburg, where he grew up and graduated from Naselle High school in 1939. He served as a radioman with the US Army during WWII, seeing action in the South Pacific. Following the war he returned to the Rosburg area where he worked in the woods for Wirkkala Brothers and later was a stacker operator for Weyerhaeuser Timber at the Deep River sorting yard, retiring in 1983. A 50-year member of Deep River Post of the American Legion, he was a kind and loving husband and father who enjoyed reading, crosswood puzzles, and gardening. He and Alice Matta were married October 10, 1953 in Longview. They lived in Deep River before moving to Naselle in 1961. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Bruce Wirkkala of Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers, Walter, Ernest and Edwin Wirkkala, all of Rosburg, and George of Tualatin, Ore.; three grandsons, one granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. No services were held. Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach was in charge.
