The Wahkiakum County Eagle-July 18, 2002 Eugene Whitten Naselle resident Eugene Walter "Gene" Whitten, 92, died July 9, 2002 in Astoria. The son of William and Sara (Fox) Whitten, he was born May 27, 1910 in Altoona, where his father was a gillnet fisherman. He grew up and attended school in Altoona which at that time was a prospering and busy fishing town. September 4, 1928, in Astoria he married Lillian Swanson of Rosburg. He fished in Altoona for several years before moving to Rosburg where he worked in his father-in-law's shingle mill. He then went to work in the woods and moved to Naselle where he resided the past 41 years. He was a partner in Grays River Logging and retired at age 62. Mr. Whitten was a charter member of Long Beach Elks No. 1937. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and hunting. In years past he enjoyed golf. He took pride in his garden and his family will remember him as a hardworking, quiet man who was devoted to his family. Besides his wife of 73 years, he is survived by a daughter Sharon Alexander of Westport; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchilden; and two great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Beverly Hyrkas and brothers William, Charles, Hugh and Thomas. Graveside services were Monday at Peacefull Hill Cemetery, Naselle. Arrangements were by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
