Corvallis Gazette-Times, Corvallis, Oregon - Monday, February 27, 2006 Obituaries Leander Wegdahl Dec. 25, 1930 — Feb. 16, 2004 Leander "Gramps" Wegdahl of Corvallis died Monday at the Oregon Veterans' Home in The Dalles. He was 73. He was born on Puget Island, Wash., the youngest of four children to August O. and Hilda Peterson Wegdahl. He was raised in Cathlamet, Wash., where he graduated from high school. He received an associate of arts degree from Lower Columbia Junior College in 1957, then attended Portland State University. He was a substitute teacher in Portland grade schools for four years. He served during the Korean War in the Navy from 1951 to 1955, stationed on the escort carrier USS Point Cruz. He married Ella Louise Powers in Corvallis on Oct. 22, 1966. He worked as a commercial fisherman in Alaska during the summer months, retiring from Evanite Battery Separation Plant in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and writing poetry. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Ella of Corvallis; daughter, Susan Pope of Aloha; grandson, Jason Pope of Dallas; brother, Robert of Longview, Wash.; sister, Mary Jacobson of Cathlamet, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Sally Lamb, preceded him in death. A service and Navy rites will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Willamette National Cemetery.
