Wahkiakum Eagle-August 2000 WEBSTER, Dean Lloyd Age 67, died at his Rosburg residence. He was born in Lakeview, the son of Owen and Marjorie (Christner) Webster. At the age of 17 he entered the US Coast Guard at Seattle. In a career which spanned 32 years he rose from apprentice seaman to captain and served in various Coast Guard stations and on ships throughout the continental US, Guam, Japan, England and Denmark. He served as captain of the vessels Sagebrush, Bittersweet, Citrus, Fir and the Tupelo, a buoy tender stationed at Tongue Point, Astoria. He also served at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C. Among the honors awarded him were the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Commandants Commendation Ribbon. Following retirement he lived in the Seattle area where he worked for the consulting firm CACI. He later returned to Astoria where he worked 10 years for Ogilvie Company, a firm engaged in buoy repair at Tongue Point. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and was a wonderful cook. He was fluent in six languages including German, Japanese and Spanish. Four years ago he moved to Rosburg where he enjoyed the quiet rural life. While stationed in Denmark he met and married Helma Dam February 2, 1962 in Edje, Fardes, Denmark. She survives him at the family residence. Also surviving are daughters, Minna Webster of Rosburg, Helen Drake of Eliot, Maine and Deborah Boyd of Shoreline; a son, Carl, of Portland and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the cemetery in Portland. Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach, was in charge.
