Wahkiakum County Eagle-February 1998 Martin Nathaniel “Mike” Ullakko Life-long Naselle resident Martin “Mike” Ullakko, 90, died January 31, 1998 in Long Beach. The son of Finnish immigrants John and Emelia Valisalo Ullakko, he was born September 5, 1907 in Astoria. He lived with his family on their farm in the Knappton area near the Columbia River. He attended from Naselle School where he was yearbook editor his senior year. After high school he attended business college in Seattle before returning to Naselle. He worked at the Knappton lumber mill until it was destroyed by fire. In 1941 he went to work for A. H. Brix Logging as a boom man and worked there until 1957 when he was employed by the Washington State Highway Department, retiring in 1971. Mr. Ullakko was a member of the Naselle Lutheran Church, Grays River Grange and a charter member of the now defunct Naselle Grange. In his youth he became a member of The Lone Scouts and The Lone Beaver Tribe and Legion, organizations that later joined with the Boy Scouts. He maintained a lifelong interest in these organizations. In younger years he fished, hunted bear, trapped beaver, and hiked in the area near his home. He lived on the family homestead his entire life and moved into his present residence on Thanksgiving Day 1917. An independent man, he was interested in many things, from medicine to politics, and had a special relationship with his wife of 56 years. He and Agnes Juve were married October 4, 1941 in Woodburn, Ore. She survives, living in Long Beach. Also surviving are a brother Ted Ullakko of Salem, Ore., and several nephews. Services were Wednesday at Naselle Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Penttila’s Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach.
