Wahkiakum County Eagle-June 1996 Ruth M. (Munson) Tipp Age 83, of Cathlamet died at St. John Medical Center. She was born in Linnton, Ore., to John D. and Orpha Jane (Cline) Munson, and attended school on Puget Island and in Cathlamet. She met Harry Tipp, her husband-to-be, in 1928 as she was working in a local café, and they were married on August 25 of that year in Vancouver. After their marriage, she ran the cookhouse in the lumber mill where her husband worked. They later moved to Portland, and she began a 27-year career in day care, caring for her grandchildren and friend's children. The Tipps were known as "Gram" and "Pop" to several hundred children during those years. In 1978 they retired to Cathlamet. Last August, the Tipps celebrated 67 years of marriage. Harry Tipp died January 2 of this year. Survivors include three daughters, Juanita Baker of Newberg, Ore., Harriet Powell of Anchorage, and Loretta Nicholson of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two brothers, Roger Munson of Cathlamet and Robert Munson of Portland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Johnny and Henry Munson, preceded her in death. Funeral services were Monday at Dowling Chapel in Cathlamet with Roger Munson officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
