The Wahkiakum County Eagle-November 3, 2005 Cathlamet, Washington Eugene Svensen Eugene Sidney Svensen, 79, born March 12, 1926, died October 25, 2005 in Arlington. He was the son of Sidney and Esther Svensen and grew up on Puget Island. He fished commercially on the Columbia River until World War II called his service. He served as a seaman First Class Gunners Mate on the Victory Ships, Victory Brazil and Grace R. Herberd. The armed guard were defenders of the slow Liberty Ships. He saw service from San Francisco to Honolulu and Okinawa. In 1958 he moved to the Stanwood area where he worked driving log trucks, milk trucks and for Twin City Foods, retiring in 1989. Mr. Svensen was a member of the Camano Lutheran church, Eagles and various veteran organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40-8 and 505 and the American Legion which he is an honored life member. IN his 47 years he served as Post 92 commander six times, Post vice department commander, District Commander and in several other capacities. He was a member of the Camano Island Fire and Rescue and was voted Firefighter of the Year in ’96, ’98, ’99 and 2000 and 2001 at Station One. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Ilene Svensen, two daughters, Tami (Fred) Douglass of Camano Island and Charlotte (Roy) Greene of Seabeck; a son David (Jeane) Lund of Stanwood; two sisters Selma Olsen of Cathlamet and Lorraine Bailey of Seattle; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Sunday at the Camano Lutheran church with a reception following at the American Legion in Stanwood. Donations may be made to the American Legion Scholarship Fund or the Camano Island Fire Association for the benefit of Station 1.
