Wahkiakum Eagle- Aug. 1997 SVENSEN, Esther Helene Age 82, died at a Longview hospital. She was born in St. Paul, Minn., to John and Helga (Hedberg) Skagen, and came to Washington as a child. She graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle and came to Puget Island in 1935. She and Elroy Svensen were married November 19, 1938, in Vancouver, and celebrated 58 years together in November 1996. For more than 20 years the Svensens went commercial fishing in Prince William Sound, Alaska. She enjoyed gardening, reading and playing bunco. Present and former memberships included the Astoria Fishermen's Wives, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Cathlamet Orthopedic Guild, Puget Island Grange, Puget Island Norse Hall and Longview Elks. Survivors include her husband, Elroy, at home; a daughter, Margrith Glaser of Astoria; a son, Tom Svensen of Astoria; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Puget Island with Pastor Cliff Weimer officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
