Wahkiakum County Eagle-June 1996 Norman "Doc" Stanley Longtime Puget Island resident, died in a Cathlamet nursing home. He was 85. He was born in Portland, the son of Dean C. and Pauline (Drews) Stanley. He moved to Puget Island in 1928. He married Elizabeth "Liisa" Lindwall on Aug. 19, 1930 in Vancouver. In 1939 they built the home she still lives in and in which they celebrated 65 years of marriage. He had delivered mail by boat from Westport, Ore., to Puget Island and was a commercial fisherman on the Columbia River and in Alaska until his retirement in 1983. He had also logged and worked as a pilebuck during those years. He played baseball and softball on Cathlamet city teams and enjoyed his family and traveling with his wife. He was a past member of the Longview Elks and Longview Moose Lodge an a member of the Puget Island Grange. Survivors include his wife; three daughters Jackie Backman of Stayton, Ore., Jeanette Gisselberg, of Shelton, and Geri Smith of Logan Lake, British Columbia; a brother, James M. Stanley of Santa Barbara, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew. A sister, Gertrude Robinson, preceded him in death. The will be no service.
