Published in The Daily News on 11/8/2007. Daniel M. Sprague 1924 - 2007 Daniel M. Sprague, 83, of Astoria died Nov. 2, 2007, in Port Orchard, Wash. He was born April 6, 1924, in Astoria to Chester and Clara (Olson) Sprague and lived in the Lower Columbia area all of his life. Mr. Sprague served in "A" company 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines in Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Tarawa, the Gilbert Islands and Saipan and Tinian Islands. He was one of nine Marines to return from that battle. He was a member of the 2nd Marine Division Association. He was a building inspector with the Civil Service for more than 20 years. He retired in 1979. He enjoyed building things, traveling and anything outdoors. He loved his family. Mr. Sprague was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Mae Sprague; two grandsons, Doug Yoder and David Sprague; and many brothers and sisters. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Diana Sprague of Gig Harbor, Wash., Dan and Sue Sprague of Stanwood, Wash., and John and Lori Sprague of Astoria; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bill Stephenson of Silverdale, Wash., and Karen and Jim Foster of Seabeck, Wash.; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Charmie Sprague of Boistfort, Wash.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ouida Hanscom of Auburn, Wash., and Yvonne and Rob Webb of Cathlamet; four grandchildren; five stepgrandsons; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries in Astoria. Viewings will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
