Wahkiakum Eagle-November 2001 SMITH, Donald Patrick Age 72, died at St. John Medical Center. He was born in Springlake Township, Wis., to Carl F. and Nellie M. (Canning) Smith. He moved to Longview at age 7 and settled in Cathlamet in 1961. He married Carol Everest on Dec. 31, 1971. She survives him at home. In 1961, he along with his brothers, bought the St. Helens Inn in Longview. He also owned the Jim's Café in Cathlamet. The Gillnetter in Ilwaco and The Ocean Breeze in Ocean Park. In 1971, he bought the Cathlamet Hotel. He and his wife also cooked in logging camps near Juneau, Alaska, retiring in 1986. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1959. He was stationed in Korea and Germany and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed local and international news, card games, and cooking and baking for his family. Survivors include six sons, Lonnie Kubacki of Longview, Donald Smith of Kodiak, Alaska, Kenneth Smith of Castle Rock, Ralph Pedersen of Puget Island, Frank Pedersen of Castle Rock, and Marshall Pedersen of Moorestown, N.J.; two daughters, Kay Chamberlain of Skamokawa and Rita Jones of Sparks, Nev.; two brothers, James Smith of Longview and Ronald Smith of Ocean Park; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
