The Daily News-October 5, 2010 Longview, Washington Dewey B. Smith Jr. Beloved Cathlamet resident Dewey B. Smith Jr., passed away Sept. 30, 2010, at the Hospice Care Center. He was born July 30, 1925, in Thayer, Kan., to Dewey Sr., and Kathleen (Clapsaddle) Smith. He graduated from high school in Billings, Mont. On Aug. 5, 1944, he married Jean McEachern. She survives him at home. Dewey joined the Navy in 1943 and loved serving his country for 20 years before retiring in 1962. After retiring from the Navy he worked in Bremerton at the Puget Sound Naval shipyard for several years. Dewey graduated from the University of Washington in 1972 and worked as a physician’s assistant from 1971 to 1997 at the Cathlamet Medical Clinic for doctors Phil and Richard Avalon. He was an avid golfer and bowler, bowling on numerous leagues. He loved sports, and played football in the Navy. He also loved playing softball. He loved his God, his family and his country. In addition to his wife, Jean, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Smith of Ele Ele, Hawaii, and Scott Smith of Cathlamet; two daughters, Terri S. Wawrzynowicz of Cornelius, Ore., and Lynn R. Jarvis of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, James C. Smith; and two sisters, Cleone Wise and Betty Lee Paul. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers. A celebration of Dewey’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cathlamet Christian Fellowship.
