Wahkiakum Co. Eagle- Nov. 1995 SHAFER, Harriet Evelyn “Hattie" Age 89, died at a Puget Island foster care home. She was born in Bothell, to John and Elma Bailey and came to Puget Island about a year ago. A graduate of Bothell high school she attended Bellingham Normal school and retired from Kohler Plumbing Supply after a 30-year secretarial career. She was the last living relative of John Cook Bailey, who homesteaded in North Creek Valley near Bothell in 1883. The family homestead is the location of the oldest working barn on the West coast. She enjoyed traveling, playing piano, growing flowers, her cats, collecting stamps and written communication. Survivors include a nephew, Mason Bailey of Puget Island, several nieces and a nephew in the Puget Sound area, Arizona and Massachusetts. Her husband, John Shafer died in 1983. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Acacia Chapel in Seattle. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
