Unknown Publication-October 29, 1942 Helge Saari Passes The entire lower end of the county was shocked and saddened this week when news reached them that Helge Saari had passed away suddenly in a Portland hospital following an operation. Mr. Saari was well known, liked and respected. He was an oustanding citizen in his community and the sympathy of all are extended to the heartbroken family. Death came unexpectedly early Monday morning to Helge Mattias Saari, 44, well known Altoona dairyman. He had been in the hospital since the first part of October under observation and underwent an operation early last week and a second on Friday. He was thought to be getting along nicely when relatives were visiting with him the previous evening. Born in Toysa, Waasa Laani, Finland, on July 22, 1898, and as a small child was brought by his parents to the United States, locating first in Astoria for a few years before moving to the Altoona and Eden valley districts. As a young man, he engaged in the logging industry in Eden Valley and about 20 years ago established a dairy at Altoona, which he had since operated. Mr. Saari was a member of the Astoria lodge of the Finnish Brotherhood. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jennie Saari, and two daughters Vivian and Darlene, all of Altoona; his mother, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Waara, Rosburg, Washington; brother, Eino Saari, Astoria; and two sisters, Mrs. Garner (ili) Hakonen, Astoria, and Mrs. John (Pauline) Setala, of Rosburg. Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Eden Valley, Wash. Church. Rev. Ellis Kovem officiated and interment in the Eden Valley cemetery with the Finnish Brotherhood assisting. Pallbearers were Ed Stephan, William Whitten, Allen Heiner, Ernest Saltka, Orris Smalley and Alfred Junttila.
