Wahkiakum Eagle-October 1998 PEEK, Luther L. 'Jack' Age 77, died at a Longview medical center. He was born in Tecumseh, Neb., the son of Oscar and Blanche Blakely Peek. He grew up in the Mid-west and farmed in Kansas prior to coming to the Cathlamet area in 1947. On December 31, 1939 he was married to Theda Standley at Weir, Kan. He served in the Navy in WWII, being stationed in the South Pacific. After moving to this area he worked for the Wahkiakum Soil Conservation District operating heavy equipment for 27 years. He retired in 1976. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling with his wife, bowling and playing cards. He served as a county commissioner, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Governmental board member, Puget Island Fire District commissioner, Wahkiakum County Planning Commission member, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Health District chairman, and County Road Administration board member. He was a member of the Wahkiakum Lion's club and Deep River Legion post. Survivors include his wife at home; two sons, Donald of Philadelphia and Douglas of Cathlamet; a daughter, Janice Freeman of Brush Prairie; a sister, Lottie Burke of Clarinda, Iowa; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday from the United Church of Christ with Rev. Irene Martin officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
