Wahkiakum County Eagle-Dec 1996 Eva Josephine Nelson Age 90, livelong Naselle resident died in Long Beach. She was born on the family farm in Salmon Creek, the daughter of Finnish immigrants, Matt and Maria Niukkala Alanen. She had many wonderful and vivid memories of her childhood in Salmon Creek where she grew up and attended school. On July 1, 1925 she married Gunnar Nelson and they made their first home at the Deep River Timber Company logging camp. Later they built a home in Salmon Creek where she was a homemaker, milked cows, picked berries and showed her expertise in the kitchen. In years past, she demonstrated the making of specialty "squeaky cheese" at the Naselle Finn-Fest. She enjoyed attending Naselle Lutheran church where she was a lifelong member and worked with the Lutheran Ladies Aid group. She was a former member of the Naselle Grange and an associate member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West. She enjoyed a good cup of coffee, baking and telephone conversations with family and friends. Her family will remember her happy, cheerful personality and her love of her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Frances Penttila and Betty Vaughn both of Naselle; son Roy Nelson of Rosburg; brother Oiva Alanen of Long Beach; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Gunnar in 1973 and by brothers and sisters Einar Alanen, Hilja Alanen, Sulo Alanen and Martha Talus. Memorial services were Monday at Naselle Lutheran Church. Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach was in charge.
