J. T. Nassa and Family Carrie J. Nassa Passes Away Came to the United States in 1879 and was a resident of Wahkiakum County and Cathlamet for a number of years. Last Sunday afternoon, April 7th, the town was shocked by the news of the death of Mrs. John T. Nassa of this city. She had been in the St. Mary’s hospital, Astoria, but a short time, where she underwent a serious operation and apparently was recovering when a turn for the worse appeared Sunday morning. Relatives were immediately notified of her condition. She died Sunday, April 7th, at 12:24 o’clock in the afternoon. Carrie J. Nassa was born in Nerstrand, Stavanger, Norway, November 7th, 1856. She and her husband, John T. Nassa, were married February 12, 1876. She emigrated to the United States from Norway, coming on the S. S. Celtic of the White Star line, arriving here July 18th, 1879. She then went to California, thence to Astoria, Ore., and later, she and her husband settled on a homestead about three miles above Cathlamet, along the Columbia River. The homestead is still in possession of the family. In 1895, she, together with her family, moved to Cathlamet, where they have resided ever since. Eight children were born to them, four of whom are living. She is survived by her husband, John T. Nassa; four children, Mrs. F. M. Potter, Grays River, Mrs. Enoch Eide, Altoona, Theo. M. and Richard A. of Cathlamet; four grandchildren, Fred Foster, Merton Potter, and Harriett Potter and Harry Eide; four sisters, Mrs. Ole Paulsen, Astoria, Ore., Mrs. S. J. Belland, Portland, Ore., Hannah Vastol and Lisa Vasenden, both residing at Nerstrand, Norway, and one brother, Sivert Rasmussen, Portland, Ore. Mrs. Nassa was a likeable woman and was a good, kind and devoted mother and wife. The community loses a good citizen and one who was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew her. The remains were placed in charge of E. B. Hughes, the well known undertaker, and were brought here Tuesday. Funeral services were held in the Congregational church at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. W. W. Head officiating, and burial took place in Greenwood cemetery. A bower of flowers literally covered the casket, which were the offerings of friends and relatives. Friends and relatives from Oregon who attended at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Belland, Mrs. Anna Williams and daughter, Marjorie, Richard J. Belland, of Portland, Mrs. and Mrs. Ole Paulsen, Siabelle and Olda Paulsen, of Astoria, Mrs. Anna Paulsen, St. Helens, Ore., and Sivert Rasmussen, St. Johns, Ore.
