Wahkiakum County Eagle-December 1996 Thomas William Maughan Age 80, died at his Ilwaco residence. He was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the son of Thomas and Hazel (Harmon) Maughan. At age 12 he moved with his family to Puget Island and attended Wahkiakum High School in Cathlamet. At age 17 he joined the US Navy, serving four years, and he later served with the Merchant Marine at the end of WWII. He worked at the Crown Zellerbach mill in Cathlamet in the power plant and in 1942 was called to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. He retired from the shipyard in 1969 as a steam and electrical engineer. He married Audrey Ellison Sept. 9, 1937 in Skamokawa and she survives. Following retirement they moved to Ilwaco where they have resided the past 16 years. He was a life member of the Port Orchard Masonic Lodge #98 F & AM, life-member of Occident Lodge #99 F & AM of Ilwaco, and a member of Scottish Rite Temple of Bremerton and Aloha Shrine Temple of Honolulu, Hawaii. He had been a ham radio operator since 1963 and enjoyed traveling. Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by a brother Ralph K. Maughan Sr. of Bonney Lake; five adopted grandchildren and four adopted great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Susan Leisle, son Thomas Dean Maughan, brother Donald J. Maughan and grandson Danny Maughan. No formal services were held. Arrangements were by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
