Wahkiakum Eagle-October 1997 MATTSON, Ann Age 92, Ocean Park resident, died in Astoria. She was the daughter of John and Christina Mortenson Carlson, she was born in Astoria, and she commuted by boat to school in Astoria, returning home on the weekends. She graduated from Astoria High school and received her teaching education from Bellingham Normal School. After receiving her education she taught in Cordova, Alaska before returning to the local area where she taught in Portland, and later Knappa and Astoria schools before retiring and moving to Ocean Park 25 years ago. She had many memories of growing up on the banks of the Columbia River at Altoona. She particularly remembered unloading fishing boats by herself. She was a member of Pacific Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Ilwaco, A. A. R. P., Business and Professional Women Organization, and the Peninsula Garden club. She loved to travel and garden, was proud of her flowers, and was a prolific baker. Throughout her life she maintained an interest in young people and their educational needs. Another life-long interest was the fishing and seafood industry and she enjoyed seafoods of all types. She and Bert Mattson were married April 7, 1938. Surviving are sisters, Gladys Erickson of Astoria, and Ruth Gustafson of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were Tuesday at Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
