Wahkiakum County Eagle-Jun 1996 Jack Clifford Martin Age 86, died at his home in the Elochoman Valley. He was the youngest in a family of four boys and one girl born to Henry James and Mary Belle (Scott) Martin, in Armstrong, B. C., Canada. He was brought to the States as an infant and grew up, for the most part, in the Eastern part of the state, namely in the Walla Walla and Pasco areas. He worked at an early age in the wheat fields before mechanized equipment took over the work of the 32-mule teams. He came to Wauna, Ore. at the age of 19 to work in the Crosset Western mill and remained there until the mill ceased to operate early in 1930. In the spring of 1932, he came to Cathlamet to work on a farm and apiary in the Elochoman Valley. He and Myna Groesbeck were married Dec. 21, 1933. He was an outdoor person who loved to fish, hunt and garden. He acquired somewhat of a reputation for long distance and accuracy casting and was particularly good with firearms. He was, also, an excellent horseman and rode in the Pendleton Roundup several years. He worked as a bushler for Crown Zellerbach for a number of years, retiring in 1969. He fished commercially in the Lower Columbia, Alaska and near the Canadian border. He had his own boat built by the Blix Boat Builders of Puget Island and ran it back and forth for several years to the Kenai Peninsula. He served in the Army of the US Battery "E", 30th Field Artillery at Camp Roberts, Calif., and was transferred to the Enlisted Reserve Corps. His number in the famous 1940 Selective Service fish bowl drawing was the second one pulled and he was in the first group of five to be inducted from Wahkiakum County. He was a life member of Longview Elks Lodge and a long-term member of the Elochoman Grange. He is survived at home by his wife, Peggy, of 63 years; a daughter, Rosemary and Ray Mogush of Lacey; two granddaughters, Libby Yuskaitis of Bellevue and Lori Mogush of Lacey; one grandson, Lane Martin Mogush of Olympia, seven great-grandchildren and a nephew. Services were held at Cathlamet Congregational Church with Rev. Joan Ham officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
