Wahkiakum County Eagle-January 8, 2009 Mary A. Lang Longtime Puget Island-Cathlamet resident Mary A. Lang died December 31, 2008, at the Hospice Care Center. She was 81. She was born May 19, 1927, in Chicago, IL to German-Swiss immigrants Karl M. and Mary J. (Zund) Lang. The Lang family moved to Puget Island in 1932. Mary graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1945. She went on to study at Seattle University. On returning to Cathlamet, she worked for the phone company for six years. Mary spent 35 years working for the U.S. Postal Service. 22 years as Cathlamet Postmaster, she retired in 1986. Mary was involved in many activities with friends and family. She was an active member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. She was also a Benedictine Oblate of Mt. Angel Abbey. She was a charter member of the Puget Island Auxiliary of Children’s Hospital in Seattle since 1959. She was secretary for the Puget Island Fire District for 12 years and for the Wahkiakum County Historical Society for 18 years. During her senior years, she enjoyed the quilting group “River City Strippers”. Mary was preceded in death by her parents. Her surviving family members include her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Mary M. Lang in Longview. Their children and families were very important in her life, they include John and Anne Lang and children Andrew, Erin, Michael and James; Joseph Lang; Edward and Becky Lang and children, Hannah and Matthew; Peter and Barbra Black and children, Charles and Jonah. All live in Portland, OR. Mary took every opportunity to travel and to spend time at the beach. She actively communicated with relatives and friends in Switzerland. She was much loved and will be greatly missed. A rosary was held Wednesday and a funeral Mass followed at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Cathlamet. Viewing was held at Dowling Funeral Home in Cathlamet. Private interment will take place at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens.
