The Wahkiakum County Eagle-March 11, 1999 Obituaries Floyd Jaspers Floyd Francis Jaspers, 90, died March 5, 1999 in Portland. He was the son of Peter Francis and Alma Evarena (Gundersen) Jaspers and was born November 3, 1908 in St. Johns, Oregon. He grew up on Puget Island where he attended grade school but graduated from Westport, Ore., high school. In 1930 he married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Lauretta Shelton. Together they made their first home on Puget Island where their three sons were born. During the early 1940’s the family moved to Portland where the Jaspers raised their children. Mrs. Jaspers died there in 1993 after 63 years of marriage. Mr. Jasper learned the pile driving trade from his father and earned his living in this branch of heavy construction, helping build highway bridges and overpasses throughout the Northwest and dams on the Columbia. He loved tools and machinery and was a avid gardener but he was most interested in his family and their welfare. One of his greatest pleasures was coordinating an annual family reunion on Puget Island. He also volunteered to work in the Puget Island Grange booth during the Wahkiakum County Fair each year. He was the first chairman of the Puget Island Good Roads Committee, a 50 plus year Grange member and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his three sons, Lawrence Jaspers of Lake Oswego, Ore., Dean Jaspers of West Linn, Ore., and Walter Jaspers of Bothell; a sister, Helen Jaspers Abbott of Yoncalla, Ore.; a step-sister, Doris Miller of Long Beach; a step-brother, Ted Baumgardner of Canby, Ore.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; one bother, Louis Jaspers and one granddaughter preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, at Ross-Hollywood Chapel, NE 48th and Sandy Blvd., Portland. Private family graveside services to follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations or memorials be made to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital or the charity of choice.
