Wahkiakum Eagle-June 2000 JACOBSON, Wilbur Dale Age 81, lifelong Cathlamet resident, died in Ilwaco. He was born in Cathlamet, to Fred and Selma (Johnson) Jacobson. He graduated from Wahkiakum High school in 1937. He started his own orchestra there, the "Wilbur Jacobson Orchestra," which continued to play in Washington and Oregon until the 1970s. He worked at the Cathlamet Post Office during the mid-1930s and was a newspaper distributor for the Oregonian covering Longview to Long Beach. In 1944 he joined the US Navy and started a 10-piece orchestra aboard ship. In 1946 he returned to his position with the Oregonian where he worked for many years. In the 1960s he owned and operated Petrolane Gas retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Longview Elks, the Musicians Union, and the Cathlamet Fire Department for 33 years. He married Mary Wegdahl June 1, 1941. She survives him at home. Also surviving are a son, Dale of Long Beach; four daughters, Gwen Gorley of Cathlamet, Cathy Jacobson of Ilwaco, Doreen Castle of Bothell, and Jill McPherson of Vancouver; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ted Jacobson. Graveside services were held Sunday at the cemetery with Pastor Cliff Weimer of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
