The Daily News-Longview, Wa. October 1988 IRVING, Melvin Edward Former city council member and mayor of Cathlamet, died at St. John's Medical Center. He was 71 years old. He was born in Cathlamet, and was a lifelong resident. He was in the logging business and retired from Crown Zellerbach after 35 years. He also owned and operated a charter service at Ilwaco for many years. His wife, Helen, survives him at home. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bert Sigler of Portland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Skip and Vicky Irving of Federal Way and Robert and Sharon Irving of Portland; three sisters, Ione Orth and Margaret Hollar, both of Cathlamet, and Jean Bussone of Long Beach; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter, in 1962. A memorial service was held Saturday at the United Congregational Church of Cathlamet with Rev. John Steppert officiating.
