Columbia River Sun-Thursday, April 14, 1910 SKAMOKAWA Samuel Feazle has the building erected for his new shingle mill in the East Valley and expects the machinery inside of two weeks. For many years H. O. Crippen, one of our prosperous ranchers, has been raising big things on his ranch. First it would be a monster mangel, then an oversized cabbage or a whopper of a potato. H. O. took pride in showing these products and last week he broke his record and is now the proudest man in the valley. Mrs. Crippen presented him with a 13 pound boy, one of those stout, healthy little fellows who give every promise of growing up to strong manhood. H. O. now has seven girls and two boys. Mrs. S. A. Howe, mother of Mrs. John Eleason, passed away Thursday, April 7, at the residence in East Valley. Death was the result of a shock due to an accidental fall a week before in which her hip was dislocated. The funeral was held Saturday and interment was at Fern Hill cemetery. She was born at East Machias, Maine, 78 years ago. She was married to Samuel A. Howe Jan. 6, 1851, whose death occurred about two years ago. They came West to California in 1859 and in 1867 removed to Oregon, residing at Astoria and Westport. In 1872 they came to Skamokawa and settled on the East Valley ranch now owned by John Eleason. In 1885 Mr. Howe built the house on Pleasant Point. Two daughters survive, Mrs. John Eleason and Mrs. Viola Shirley of Idaho. Also one sister in Maine, one in Montana and a brother at Port Townsend.
