Wahkiakum County Eagle-June 1996 Byron Forest "Barney" Howard Former Cathlamet Fire District 4 Chief, died at home. He was 73. He was born in Tensed, Idaho to William and Zeltia (East) Howard. He served in the Army from 1943 during WWII and married Leta Fry in 1946 in Vancouver. They moved to Cathlamet in 1947, and he began working for Crown Zellerbach that year. He retired from the company in 1984. He was a fire chief of Cathlamet Fire District 4 for many years. He was an FFA ag shop assistant at Wahkiakum High School and spent six years volunteering there. He was a Wahkiakum FFA alumni and sat on the Advisory Vo-Ag Committee. He also was a member of IWA Local 311. He enjoyed spending time with friends at the marina in Cathlamet and he loved wood-working and fishing. Survivors include his wife at home; two daughters, Linda Harrington of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Marsha Cleveland of Cathlamet; a brother, Billie Howard of Tensed; four grandchildren, Heather and Georgie Harrington and Tanya and Tracy Cleveland; numerous nieces and nephews; and one aunt and uncle. Funeral service was held at J. A. Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
