Wahkiakum Eagle-June 1997 Lavina A. Hovis Age 101 years, died at her Puget Island home. She was born in Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Mills. She attended school in Bonners Ferry, Ida., and moved to Portland at the age of 18 years. She worked as a hospital dietician. In 1924 she and husband Jack Maughan moved to Puget Island where they owned Jack's Place, a tavern and restaurant, where the Islanders gathered to dance and socialize. They also started the first telephone service on Puget Island. He died in 1939. In 1940 she married Kyle 'Red' Hovis and moved to Vancouver where she lived until 1992 when she moved back to Puget Island to be with her niece and great-niece. Mr. Hovis died in 1983. Survivors include Ora Eaton, a niece and Dianne Frank, a great-niece, both of Puget Island, and several other nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held June 30 at the cemetery in Vancouver.
