Wahkiakum County Eagle-March 1996 August E. Hoikka Age 89, of Cathlamet, died in a Cathlamet nursing home. He was born in Centerville, Wa., to Charles and Anna (Lehto) Hoikka. As a young man he lived in Rosburg, where he worked as a gillnetter with his brother on the Columbia River. In the 1930s and 40s he ran the Victoria, which transported passengers and freight from Grays River to Astoria. He also drove the Darigold Creamery truck in Wahkiakum County for several years. He later moved to Portland, and in the 1970s he returned to the Rosburg and Cathlamet area. He was the official gardener at Columbia View Care Center, where he lived for many of his last years. He very much enjoyed flower gardening, especially roses, and raised beautiful flowers that all the nursing home residents and visitors enjoyed. He was a member of the First Free Church of Puget Island. His first wife, Belle Hoikka, preceded him in death, as did his second wife, Marie Adams Hoikka in 1990. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Nina Salmela; three brothers, Victor, Albert and Calvin Hoikka; and a grandson. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Corbin and Mildred Parker, both of Cathlamet; a stepdaughter, Pat Iwamato of Portland; two sons, Gene Adams of Longview and Bob Adams of Huntsville, Ala.; four sisters, Grace Haven of Chehalis, Ellen Harrison of Longview, Helmie Wirkkala of Naselle and Jennie Pearson of Rosburg; two brothers, Edwin Hoikka and Waino Hoikka, both of Rosburg; and many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Saturday at the First Free Church of Puget Island with Pastor David Gerlach officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
