Wahkiakum Co. Eagle-November 1995 HEGSTAD, LeRoy R. "Sonny" Age 67, of Puget Island, died at home. He was born in Clatskanie, to Rudolph and Irene (Lynch) Hegstad, and attended Puget Island and Cathlamet schools. He began his 20-year Navy career in 1948. Serving as a chief machinist mate, he spent his first year of duty in China and served aboard the USS Toledo from 1950 to 1954. Other ships he spent time on include the USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Kitty Hawk and several smaller ships. He spent a portion of his service time teaching air conditioning and refrigeration in San Diego, Calf. He retired from the military. At this time, he moved with his family to Battle Ground and worked as chief engineer for Bill Roberts of Morgan Park Inc. in Portland. After his retirement in 1983, he and his family moved to Puget Island. He served as an elder of Columbia Valley's Jehovah's Witnesses Congregation in Longview. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. He and Charlotte Gibbons were married Mar. 22, 1953 in Yuma, Az. She survives him at home. Also surviving are three daughters, Sandy Germer of Medford, Ore., Sherry Shaw of Olympia and Ginger McDougall of Springfield, Ore.; a brother, Richard of Longview; three hald-sisters, Diane and Lilly, both of Portland, and Jackie in Calif.; a half- brother, John Hegstad of Portland; two foster brothers, Wallace Vog of Austin, Tex., and Bernie Vog of Edmonds; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial service were Friday at the Kingdom Hall in Longview. Dowling Funeral Home is in charge.
