Columbia River Sun Newspaper- 27 Sep 1945 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR HENRY HANIGAN Funeral services for G. Henry Hanigan, whose death occurred September 19, was conducted at the county court house in Cathlamet, Saturday afternoon. Rev. W. W. Head, a long-time friend of the family, was in charge of ceremonies. Talks were made by Judge John I. O'Phelan, Attorneys Mitchell Doumit and Ronald Moore. Hatton's Funeral Home had charge of funeral arrangements. More than 500 people--the largest crowd ever assembled in Wahkiakum county to honor one of its departed native sons--attended the funeral. The court room was filled to overflowing and hundreds of people were unable to hear the words of tribute pronounced by the speakers. People from all walks of life, friends from every section of the county and many beyond its borders were here to mourn the loss of a counselor, a worthy citizen and a true friend. Floral displays were contained in two trucks and lined the walk from Main street to the court room through which the pall-bearers passed and the decorations from loving friends were the most profuse ever displayed here. Five state patrolmen were present--Sgt. A. B. Little, Sgt. Jack Kenney, Officer Ivan Belka, Officer Merdith Jevne, and Officer Virgil Mattson, the latter two standing as honor guard. This is a customary procedure when an official dies, but these men were motivated by a deepened feeling than that of duty--they were all friends of Henry. Thus was the closing of the final earthly chapter of a man who had endeared himself to the people of Wahkiakum county through his qualifications and capabilities; through conscientious efforts as a servant of the people, in his private practice and as a county official, by his friendly attitude and understanding toward those with whom he came in daily contact. "Hank" Hanigan was a loving husband, a kind father and a worthy citizen. His passing is mourned by members of the immediate family, but he was our brother too and we have a kindred feeling in this great loss. Peace to his ashes.
