Wahkiakum Eagle- Mar. 1998 HAATAIA, Miriam Margaret Age 77, life-long Rosburg resident, died at Columbia View Care Center in Cathlamet. She was the daughter of Emil and Katie (Wayrynen) Johnson, she was born in Astoria. She grew up in Deep River where he father logged and she received her education. In 1937 she married George Haataia and they established their home in Rosburg. She was a homemaker, helped with chores on the family farm and became a telephone operator for Western Wahkiakum Telephone. From the old office in Grays River to the new office on Miller Point Road, and through many technological changes in telephone communication, she changed with the times and was chief operator when she retired. She was a member of the Community Congregational Church of Naselle where she served as organist for many years and was a member of the Martha Circle. She enjoyed gardening, her grandchildren, and visits with family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Magnuson of Kelso; three sons, George Jr. of Tacoma, Gilbert of Naselle and Marvin of Naselle; sisters, Inez Wirkkala of Naselle and Vieno Denny of Puyallup; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday at the Naselle Community Congregational Church. Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach, was in charge.
