Wahkiakum County Eagle-September 1996 GIFFORD, Woodrow J. "Woody" Seaview resident, age 84, well-known writer and logger-poet, died in an Astoria hospital. He and his twin sister, Woodruth (Ruth), were born to William and Priscilla (Fallness) Gifford in Drake, N. D., and when they were six months old they and their family moved to Stanfield, Ore. He received his schooling in Stanfield, graduating from Stanfield High School, and went on to business college in Portland. He then worked in a variety of occupations, including logging. On July 25, 1935, he and Julia Mannikko were married in Marshfield, Ore. After the birth of their daughter in 1939, they moved to a farm in Deep River where they built a Grade A dairy farm and also owned Gifford's Hauling. In 1959 he quit farming and went to work full time for Weyerhaeuser Co. as a timber cutter. He was working at the Deep River sorting yard when he retired in 1974. A singer and songwriter, he organized a barbershop quartet known as the Hoolihan Family, which entertained at various functions in the area. He loved to sing and play instruments, including the violin, mandolin, harmonica and washtub. He and other music makers visited nursing homes weekly. His love for writing found one outlet in letters to the editor, where his name was seen regularly by readers of newspapers. He continued to contribute stories, poetry, cartoons and interviews with loggers for more than 20 years. He was a featured performer at the annual NW Folklife Festival in Seattle, the Ilwaco Cranberry Festival, the Pioneer Logger Picnic at Deep River, and on radio and television. After retiring from Weyerhaeuser, he published the book, "Timber Bind--Logger Rhythms of the Great Northwest." In 1989, he received the Washington State Heritage Award from Gov. Booth Gardner for his contributions as a Norwegian-American logger. His wife of 49 years, Julia, died in 1984. He leaves his daughter, Rochelle Bonney of Long Beach; two grandsons; three great-granchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday at Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach. Burial place unknown 20 May 1912-02 Sep 1996 (As transcribed by the Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum)
